junky, small, doable.
A constant onshore wind crumbles the already lackluster swell.
A few waist-high sections present themselves.
Most surfers takoff on closeouts and wipeout into the mush.
Shoredumpers on the inside. Gutless slow rollers toward sea.
Slim pickin's but doable if you need the wetness.
Loads of fisherman through the middle. Something must be runnin.
Random Thoughts:
A gay friend got me thinking about what it's like to be homosexual. To feel a deep, resolute, primal sexual attraction to those of the same sex. Not a conscious choice but an obvious directive that you can't ignore or fake. Much of society fears and lashes out against you. Ridicule and scorn from many. The storybook familial dream of meeting your mate, procreating, and reering a family becomes near impossible. Why are humans gay? Does it blend in any way with Darwinian natural selection? Can all human characteristics be explained via evolutionary theory? Music? Do we, as a species, enjoy a level of civilization above and beyond the brutal dictates of reproduction, battle for resources, competition, survival? How many other species recreate?
This also brings up the taboo subject of gay surfers. Maybe 1 in 10 in the city? Are gay surfers fearful of being too open in surfy settings? Should they be? Are surfers, as a group, more homophobic than other cultures? If so, why? (Refer to SanFranpsycho for a painful, uneasy treatment of this theme)

Dunno about the surf out thang....I've surfed 5 of the last 6 days, under acceptable to good conditions each time (including this morning with kaiser sose)....
Trips to Baja ruined SF summer surfing.
Posted by: blakestah at June 21, 2005 10:08 AMYour query about hooting into waves made me remember the last time that I was hooted into a wave. I've done it a number of times, but it's only happened to me a couple of times. I was at Steamer Lane on a solid overhead swell. However I wasn't having a particularly good session (the crowd was in full effect and I had spent much of my time waiting for the lineup to clear out on the sets so I could get some waves). Then, lucky me, a bump appeared, and there was nobody around. I turn and started to paddle in, but I was too deep! It was too steep! As I was about to pull back, my friend, paddling over the shoulder, caught my eye and gave me a hoot. That was it, no pulling back, no backing out. I took one more paddle and launched to my feet, split seconds ahead of going over the falls. I shot down the line with a perfect 8-foot face stretching ahead of me. After that, I don't remember much, good hits on the top, good cutbacks, good wave. But I cannot forget the gift of confidence the split the air in his call. Thank to Travis, I'll see you in San Diego before the summer is out. Peace, Adrian.

Posted by: kdalle at June 21, 2005 10:15 AMPersonally I hating hooting, but one time in Fiji....
It was double over head easy, Frigates. I sat on the boat most of the morning with dozens of excuses and a hand full of other wimps. I finally decided I would go out and catch a couple of shouldes. A set came and the 6 Ausies in the lineup all got a wave, long left reef waves, wrapping around, hollow, 30 minutes from shore. Three of them just about made it out to where I was and a gigantic set came, they all started hooting, "FUCKING GO" "GOOOOO!" I turned and dropped into the biggest wave of my life, after the drop I got my confidence made a few cut backs and flew out the back knees shaking, teeth clattering. It was awesome! I paddled back out with an Ausie and he said, "You surf pretty good for an unfit looking bugger" My wife loves that comment.
Surfed yesterday with Bird, funner than it looked.
Leave tomorrow for Central A.

Gays = whatever you do that's fine for you and OK by me, I just don't want to hear the details of your sex life. Some gays are over-anxious, uppety and "share" way too much about their lives, I notice ("TMI" is the probably the right terminology). I think it might be part of the process or act of making up for the long years spent in all those scattered, oppressive places they moved to SF from. Unlike SF, in *most* places gays cannot be free to self-actualize and become truly self aware. It must be a huge rush for them to finally be able to free up their attitude once they get here (Gay Mecca). But sometimes, they share too many details and I get a little grossed out. Can't front on that, can't lie, that part bugs me.

- never given stinkeye; if I've received it--and I have certainly deserved it--my poor eyesight has protected me.
- felt surf-sated yesterday after 5/6 days, but not surfed out enough to pass up the two-footers this morning.
- barrelled: never the genuine, full in-and-out; a few weeks ago for a little cover-up, yesterday for a flash-glimpse of green room just as I ate it.
- pull back constantly because I am an idiot and give most everything a look.
- charged? check! buckets thrown? check!

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at June 21, 2005 11:20 AMWas surfing Makaha last winter, 6 - 8 feet Hawaiian and just peeling perfectly with glassy conditions. A set loomed, 1 guy took off (too) deep and I was waffling, giving the guy a chance. A big bruddah paddling out wide on a tanker yells me in "GO BRAH!". The rider doesn't make the section and I go, connect with a 15 foot face all the way to the beach. Sweet Wave. The Hawaiian picks off set waves for the next two hours, making them from the point to the channell and paddling back out wide each time scoping out all the action.
I try to hoot a lot at O.B. With conditions (crowds) getting to be what they are I think a lot more positive attitude in the water helps all.

I think gay surfers have way less to worry about being "open" in San Francisco. Other parts of the country maybe, but the I think the nature and vibe of San Francisco has taught many people to mind their own. On a different note, I too, don't like hearing people flamboyantly brag about their sex life. I don't care if someone's gay or straight. It just doesn't make someone any cooler, imo.

Ethics Test
This test only has one question, but it's a very important one. By
giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally. The
test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which you
will have to make a decision. Remember that your answer needs to be
honest, yet spontaneous.
Please read slowly and give due consideration to each line.
You are in Florida, Miami to be specific. There is chaos all around you
caused by a hurricane with severe flooding. This is a flood of biblical
proportions. You are a photojournalist working for a major newspaper,
and you're caught in the middle of this epic disaster. The situation is
nearly hopeless. You're trying to shoot career-making photos. There are
houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing under the
water. Nature is unleashing all of its destructive fury. Suddenly you
see a man floundering in the water. He is fighting for his life, trying
not to be taken down with the debris. You move closer . . . somehow the
man looks familiar. You suddenly realize who it is. It's George W.
Bush!! At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to
take him under, forever. You have two options--you can save the life of
G. W. Bush, or you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer Prize winning photo,
documenting the death of one of the world's most powerful men.
So here's the question, and please give an honest answer:

Posted by: traut at June 21, 2005 12:28 PMThanks for your post today- the gay surfing thing has been
bouncing around my brain for some time now- there are the accepting
double standards ("I don't want to hear about it") and the outright
predjuces ("FAG!") and the quietly accepting ("Who cares? Go surf")
that have been evidenced already on the board. Ultimately the reality
is there- surfers are often a homophobic and conservative lot in
California. I suppose they represent a mirror of the society as a whole
but it still is an ugly reflection.
I am reminded of an experience that I had surfing out of the country
where there were a large number of traveling Americans. I met a guy in
the line up that was a burly union electrician who wore the demeanor &
tattoos of a leather bear. He was working at putting up a tough hetero
front but eventually we struck up a familiar conversation over a few
days' sessions and I caught glimpses of who he might be if he didn't
feel an obligation to keep appearances.
Imagine tempering your enjoyment of a surf spot that you have traveled
a
thousand miles to with the need to put on an act to hide your ordinary
or real persona. That just ain't cool. The attitude in the water around
the world is presumed to be one that is confrontational and
testosterone
driven just like the "boys' clubs" that have been alive and well
through
out our country (remember "Tailhook", the boardroom, sufferage?). The
surf media shares some of the blame for this state of affairs but
ultimately we who sit back in the line up while someone yells
homophobic epithats in the line up (I am guilty of sitting back to
avoid a hassle at Kellys a few years ago on this one) are guilty of
helping create an environment that allows this to stand.
I am planning to test the waters (and use my grossly atrophied photo
Posted by: goodmorning at June 21, 2005 12:32 PMdegree) in undertaking a portrait study of out gay surfers soon. Seems
like they are out there, don't know how many will be interested in
documentary evidence of their group affiliation (it would be great if
we were only surfers). I think that it is a case again of a place where
the personal is political- like the early 90's here in the city and
reactions to the AIDS crisis. I'll likely post a call for interested
parties to sit for portraits on the board after the wedding (we're
getting married in August- as is Elias- and it is a hell of a lot of
extra stuff to deal with).
Like, heavy.
Ian, the plot linked to at my site is the water temp anomaly, right now there are several large swaths of water between Hawaii and Alaska with water 3-4 degrees C above normal.
Click Here to get the actual water temps, and not the difference from normal for this time of year.
Posted by: blakestah at June 21, 2005 12:41 PMGood one J.
I would definately go for the high contrast color. I'd want to see those red veins in his face jutting out of his bone white skin and buldging eyes as he soils his shorts knowing his life is about to end. Next I'd want to have an underwater cam to film as the last air bubbles leave his bluing lips. Hopefully, he wouldn't be found for a couple days. Then I'd like to photograph his bloated body while his shirt buttons are popping off from the pressure of decomposition gases in his stomach. That would probably be a good black and white photo.
Just thinking about it makes me happy.
Posted by: Dennis at June 21, 2005 12:48 PMFred Van Dyke was ostracized at one point in the 60's for stating (paraphrased) that surfing is just acting out a homosexual fantasy.
Posted by: at June 21, 2005 12:52 PMGoodmorning, the paradox is pick up any surf magazine or book of photos and its about the most homoerotic thing out there short of an abercrombie & fitch catalog. Even more so with the older pics from the 50s - 60s. I've always thought this is kind of funny.

What does LOL mean?
Posted by: Mexi at June 21, 2005 01:14 PMWell, interesting food for thought today... You can take the posts that deal with the gay issue and those that deal with hooting as a little barometer so to speak... much easier to talk about hooting into waves than other. Not to say that everyone is required to post about either.. Both are valid.
Maybe a couple more seasons of Queer Eye and this will be easier to talk about... or maybe it will just perpetuate the steriotype more.
Suppression is the game our culture has been playing for ages. Its riddled throughout our history... Its almost bred into us. How are supposed to learn from our mistakes when we are encouraged to keep ideas and thoughts in the proverbial closet. But so far looking at our current situation, in the world at large and with issues pertaining to a persons sexual preferance we haven't learned anything. Take the Cheney and the vice presidential debates... Though it was a "cheap" shot for Edwards to ask about Cheney's daughter, did it do any good for him to just ignore it and not talk about it? What does that tell middle america and and those who do not live in the anomoly that we are fortunate enough to live in.
What is it about this fear? Why is there such animosity towards ones choices when they are different than our own.
I think its creepyer (sp?) thinking about all the frothing hetero dudes checking out every girl that walks by than a surfer dude checking me out. So what?
People are gonna have to deal with the reality sooner or later.
thats my 2c.
side note... if anyone tells you that wedding planning is easy... they might just very well be wrong.
side side note... coastal waters were rather glassy and small from san mateo county north.
side side note note... there are sharks in the water. people probably should stay away from the water.

Some gays are created by environmental stimuli. My lesbian half sister, who was given up to adoption at birth(long story but mom(unwed teen) was sent away to have baby in shame-some catholic trip that has me spinning to this day), has noted the high percentage of gays who also are adopted in the west L.A. area. Her hypothosis is that the identity crisis faced by children who are given away at birth (who is my mommy, and why didnt she love me enough to keep me?) tends to "create" gayness. Her hypo, not mine, but surely environmental issues are at work as well as possible genetic propensity to be gay.

On the gay tip, this is how I look at it:
Women I find hot have taken up a good part of my time in my mind and reality ever since I can remember.
If I felt that way about men instead of women, I am sure it would be the same, as in I would be able to feel love, lust, etc.
As I have had nothing I know of to do with deciding to be attracted to women, I take it for granted that it is natural to be attracted to women.
For those attracted to men, it seems it would be natural and that it is not a conscious decision and why would one make such a conscious decision with all of the social pressure not to.
I think that hetero guys tend to be more homophobic than hetero girls because of the different way men and women generally pursue mates. Being hit on by a man is uncomfortable because we are taught to be so forward and aggressive, I have felt a similar level of discomfort from a few aggressive women, but it has never been to the same level. As a man I am not used to being hit on so hard, girls are far more familiar with the feeling.
I lived in the 'stro for a couple of years and it gave me a high-level of empathy for the hot girls in our midst who are constantly ogled. It's really not very cool.

Posted by: at June 21, 2005 02:46 PMThe funny thing about the gays is that they seem to feel the need to push their sexuality. For instance, that "Homomuseum" link.
It's like they want to be equal, but then they go out of their way to show how different it is to be gay- pride parade, gay bars, gay choirs, etc. so they want to be included in all things straight, but then want their own gay-only groups, clubs, etc. it's a double standard.
It's like if us straight people went to places called "Straight Bars" or had the "Straight Pride Parade" etc.
I think most people dont care if you are gay or not, but dont push your gayness on me. I dont push my straightness on you.
This is a similar double standard to why there are things like the "Black Entertainment TV" Network, but a "White Entertainment TV" Network would be tagged as racist. also, at University, you can have the "Black Student Union" but you cant have the "White Student Union".
and, no, i am not homophobic, so dont generalize.
Posted by: Keep Your Gayness 2 Yourself at June 21, 2005 02:46 PMwhen was the last time a homosexual kicked someone's ass for being straight?
Posted by: defender of gayness at June 21, 2005 02:53 PMI am still intrigued by E's original question:
"Are there gay surfers in SF?"
- Now, one would think, there are some surfers whom are gay. But, I don't think much about it when I suit up and paddle out. Yet, in our liberal-ass environment of San Francisco Proper, you can't not ask the question. In fact, I don't think there is anything wrong with some bit of curiousity about the % of overall surfers who are. The same as you would ask "Hey, you think there are gay cable car operators?". Clearly, both can be answered by a affrimative "yes"! I would also assume that we have the largest population of gay surfers then any other region in the world (barring any uncommon cultural behavior going on in some remote area of the world with good waves and fiberglass) given the density of the gay population in SF.
Whatever, just curiousities.....And without those, maybe no one would be gay to begin with?
2 quotes come to mind:
- "Do whatcha like" - Humpty-Hump, Digital Underground
- "Don't bother me, I am eating" - Carl's Jr. Slogan
Posted by: Kaiser at June 21, 2005 02:56 PMI walked into the Lexington Club with a friend once (two straight guys) and we almost got our asses kicked by some of the homosexuals in there. Surfing in SF is not a very sexual behavior. But in general, I think people who are attracted to women surf more than people who are attracted to men...
As for swell on the way...big south coming, some windswell, it ain't gonna be flat! but winds may be a problem.
Posted by: blakestah at June 21, 2005 03:31 PMand is that all about all the homosexual stories of those early guys on the north shore? surfing big waves together, sleeping in the same shack together swimming under waterfalls together..someones gotta have an article or something..id be interested in checking it out..anon with the van dyke quote?
Posted by: bagel at June 21, 2005 03:36 PMyah, i find that most gay-friendly conversations go south when you start mentioning the double standard.
kloo, why didnt you want to read the rest of it? or is it cooler to just say you shouldnt have read it, even though you agree?
who cares if you are gay? find something else to focus your life on other than your gayness.
ps- I would bet that a quarter of OB surfers are gay, and probably half of the regular posters on this bleg are ghey. or at least they are bi-, or bi-curious.
Posted by: stay gay, nobody cares at June 21, 2005 03:38 PMin waikiki there is a gay surfer's club. sessions every sunday.
i had a similar lexington club experience. at first i thought i was in paradise....a guy/girl ratio of 1:10, hot chicks playing pool, good music, cheap drinks and babes giving me the up and down....until a girl in a sailor suit sunk the boat. then the bartender threatened to kick our asses because she thought we smuggled in some brews. those dykes!!

oh yeah, earlier i posted a pic of the gay skater. he came out in an issue of big brother a few years back. the cover photo had him sliding a handrail in ass-less chaps. other photos had him ripping in a banana hammock. big balls fo' sure!!
Posted by: rza at June 21, 2005 03:48 PMDirka, good observation. I wonder why they seem so sad.
Posted by: eye_reckon at June 21, 2005 03:54 PMI'm sorry; that was an obnoxious comment and I shouldn't have made it.
I think it's pretty obvious why some gay people, some minority people, some disabled people, some women, some older people, etc., end up focusing on what they quite reasonably see as their culturally problematic statuses more than most people focus on their culturally unproblematic statuses.

is my philosophy. if everyone were more open to
others doing what they wanna do, seems things would
be so much more calm. maybe the whole country would
cut it out internally and externally. i have no issue with gay, straight, fat, skinny, tall or short people. when they tell me how to live my life, like they know what is good for me...
then i have issues. from a recovering southerner.

Posted by: e at June 21, 2005 04:43 PMI wonder what natures persepective is on the whole gay thing?
Is it evolution realizing that this is a cruel, overpopulated world and now is a good time to tweak the reproduction tendancy?
I could never consider going gay so long as there are Japanese girls in mini skirts and big socks. That and hemoroids.

Posted by: e at June 21, 2005 05:07 PMPunk ain't no religious cult
Punk means thinking for yourself
You ain't hardcore cos you spike your hair
When a jock still lives inside your head
[Chorus:]
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks - Fuck Off!
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks - Fuck Off!
If you've come to fight, get outa here
You ain't no better than the bouncers
We ain't trying to be police
When you ape the cops it ain't anarchy
[Chorus]
Ten guys jump one, what a man
You fight each other, the police state wins
Stab your backs when you trash our halls
Trash a bank if you've got real balls
You still think swastikas look cool
The real nazis run your schools
They're coaches, businessmen and cops
In a real fourth reich you'll be the first to go
[Chorus]
You'll be the first to go

Posted by: e at June 21, 2005 05:32 PMBack when I was Andrew on 22nd and Dolores, I used to hang out at the Lexington. I found the crowd to be split between stink eye and happy to have you, which is the same exact mix in every mission bar because the hipsters are so goddamn full of themselves. Like everywhere else, if you go in feeling unwelcome, people will treat you as such. Try going in to Pittburg's wearing a tie on a Wednesday night at midnight and see what kinda stinkeye you get. Lexinton's $1 pabst on Monday should make even the least comfortable feel welcome.
Steamwand, congrats on the new addition to the family.
Posted by: Andrew in Alameda at June 21, 2005 05:38 PMthanks everybody! i am so excited and totally scared.
Posted by: steamwand at June 21, 2005 05:41 PMnah, none of my genes in the mix. honestly, if i was chosing, i wouldn't choose my fam's dna, we're all a bunch of fat alchies. my girl's the pretty, healthy, smart one. just kidding. a friend hooked us up with his stuff he wasn't using and he's a smart healthy guy so we should be stylin.
the home pregnancy test we used was digital, it actually read "pregnant." can't really argue with that. but we still had to do it twice just to be sure.
wish i could have made it to the shindig last saturday. been in the carolinas for the past week. man the waves are small, but we were able to tell our families in person. sweet. made 3to5's shrimp tacos for dinner with the whole family tonight. rave reviews. can't wait to get back to the beach.
Congrats!
How did you decide who was going to carry the baby? That must would be a tough ro-sham-bo loss.
Posted by: Hb at June 21, 2005 05:54 PMWho cares about the gayness!? What's up with the camel spider!!! Eyeeeeeeee! That's f*cked up!
Posted by: MxRxHx at June 21, 2005 06:30 PMKorewin, Will do and thanks. I got the DVD and I DLed the cd's. Stoked!
Congrats Steamward, best way I've heard, her egg, his spern, you carry, everyone is involved.
Peace, (for reals this time)
Posted by: Mexi at June 21, 2005 08:28 PMCongrats steamwand! You and your partner make the third lesbian couple that I know who are either currently pregnant or are in the process of getting pregnant. Cool...
About gay surfers, who cares? There are gay surfers like there are gay people who do every other activity. Probably a lot easier to be a gay surfer than to be a gay football player. I've heard anti-gay epithets used in the water on multiple occasions though. I guess you'd get that in most any testosterone-driven sport. Despite all the people who have their knickers in a twist over gay marriage and all that, I definitely think we're moving towards a time where gay people aren't seen as gay and are just seen as people.
Posted by: mwsf at June 21, 2005 08:30 PMWhat does it even matter? Anyone who cares about others sexuality probably watches springer and ricki lake and reality shows because they love being involved in other peoples business.
Posted by: at June 21, 2005 08:54 PMNo gayness in baseball!
Posted by: at June 22, 2005 12:55 PMGay, Straight, who the F cares? Clean glassy waves, vacationing in the tropics on a generous reef/beach break (chilling with the locals in the cantina), hanging out with friends at a BBQ or potluck, seeing an amazing musician (like Charlie Hunter, or Trey), hiking the somewhere awe inspiring, hanging out with the family, or just taking some time to ponder...Thats what I'm talkin' about.
I have some great friends who are into same sex, and others who are into traditional stuff, and still others who are into both...it doesn't really make any difference to me, there just people.
It seems that the athletic prowess that surfing requires naturally selects some "jock types" with homophobic mentalities (yes, I am generalizing, but its true!). I guess my question is, what are people afraid of??? being hit on? (you should be flattered that someone actually finds you attractive, you can always politely reject them)?
I grew up in Oakland, and Bay Area natives are taught acceptance and how to celebrate differences. All the different ideas and people in the Bay Area make it a catalyst for culture and innovation, and a Mecca of sorts for all kinds of interesting people. I know that many of the surfers around here did not grow up here, immigrating from places that may or may not teach acceptance and celebrating differences.
Its strange how things change as you get a bit older, I have two kids (5, 1.5), both of which I want to be surfing by 7-8 or so, they totally accept our "gay" friends as family. I guess it just illustrates that hate is not a family value.
Lastly, I was at the park with the kids, and some 8 year olds were saying "That is so gay!" blah blah blah, and that is about the maturity level of people who are homophobic, so grow up and celebrate each day and the people who grace you in it.
