I love that lil' rush when you see a wave start to bowl and pitch and you head straight into the guts of it--not knowing if you'll make it but thinking that you will. Saw some nice waves from my vantage point this a.m.

I love that there's a seal on the inside of that first surf photo.

yo e -- T and I stayed at a pretty rad place on Anini Beach a couple years ago. I'll see if I can dig up more info. Not the best locale for surf--you have to drive to most spots--but it's pretty remote, at the end of a long dirt road, and super chill. Ten minutes or so from Hanalei Bay.

Checked all the e-data this morning and figured I knew just where to go. Got there. It sucked. But on the way I'd passed an awesome-looking wave with no one out, so I headed back. No wind, no current, no bump (until 10:30, anyway, when it started getting bumpy and sectiony), glassy, head-high, solid---YEAH!!

Hanalei Bay is sweet, we rented an awesome house in Princeville for super cheap a couple years ago. If I find the info I'll email you e. Amazing waves but some tough locals and tougher tiger sharks..

artifact, my friend grew up in Moab and he said that Devil's Garden is a cool place to check out if you want to see what Mars looks like

i've been to mars and that is not what mars looks like. we are going to have a space station on the moon.

whoa! the airline i'm flying to hawaii, north american, charges $75 each way for boards. guess i'll be renting.

I have flown to HNL & Kona regularly and I have found that a coffin bag with 4 boards does cost $75 going out (they seem to charge by the bag) but coming back give a porter $25 & your bag and it'll get on the plane home to meet you. I gennerally bring two long boards (me & the better half) and a couple shortboards. I also stay a while. I dunno.

boards seem to be cheaper in the islands, you can buy over there then leave with shop guy for sale on consignment basis when you check out, maybe lose $100 on the deal but better than $20 per day to rent and you have a new board instead of an old beater rental

thanks goodmorning. i guess i'm still on the fence then. what do you know about rental options in kona? shops that have decent boards, both long and short?
s.s.-thinking about dping tomorrow. interested? i'll bring the make-up. never went through the goth phase. did pretty much every other phase: hippie, raver, hip-hop, dyke-punk, and i guess now i'm heading into suburban-lesbo-mommy, but maybe i can squeeze in a little goth in the meantime.

never rented, I am sure there are places to do so though. Enjoy your trip!

3to5, you think that south-loving spot is working these days? It is that time of year. I have been tempted over the last few days to give it a look-see.

Steamwand the place I've rented in the past is called Pacific Vibrations right in Kona. The selection was bad but they might be able to reserve something for you that is better if you call in advance.

There is a new Hobies Sports Kona in the Kona Village in that had a ton of boards for sale on consignment and new. It was closed when I was there but I know they rent. Probably worth calling them too. Should be able to google or 411 for both numbers. I'd guess Hobies is your best bet for something decent.

You can also rent boards for the day right next to Banyans but the selection really small. If its really small you can probs find something funky from 1985 to go mess around on there. Its a bit cheaper.

I'm reading the DEVIL'S TEETH right now - pretty good stuff if you want to get to know your neighbors around the Faralons. Cool history of the island that goes back to the 1800's. I highly recommend it!

3to5, not a problem. I would NEVER spill the beans. I only ask because I KNOW you know what I am referring to.

And technically, we are neighbors but only because I pay rent and I pay a mortgage right now. In about 20 days, I no longer pay rent. So, we will be neighbors then.

when is it too sketchy to go out? cruising through southern monterey county this weekend and saw some tempting spots working, nobody within miles, bright sun shine etc etc. but every once in a while a huge rock would show it's face and i would rethink it. intermediate skills and i did not want to do anything dumb alone. what do you guys judge surfability by? situation specific? any rules of thumb? thanks.

Darrick will discuss surf and water safety, including the following topics:

* Infant, child and adult CPR
* Risk assessment and management
* Maximizing peak experiences
* Adaptation in different locations
* Handling worst case scenarios
* Scene assessment
* Team work

Additionally, Darrick will share stories from his experiences as a North Shore lifeguard. There will also be an open Q&A session and a slide show.

Are all surfers as big of a pyro as I am? Actually I've never seen a crazier home display of big mortars than Pacifica last year- I guess that why there are " No illegal fireworks" signs every 20 feet. Mortars rule!

I grew up to hate the 4th of July. Every year our clean nice beach would get invaded by drunk assholes from Cambell, Dublin, or Antioch to name a few. Leaving a wake of beercans, cigarette butts, food wrappers, spent bottle rockets and other firework remants everywhere....... all in the name of patriotism. Trash your beautiful country and get in fight with your fellow drunken american idiot. wooo hooo. land of the free and home of the brave.

hey peeps. just back from a trip to the east coast, fun enough but included just one surf outing, sloppy and very cold wildwood, NJ. been out of the loop surf-wise lately, hopefully july will be better than june for me.

offtopic semi-desperate plea for help: computer repair dude/dudettes. i returned to find that my wife's dell laptop is acting up, seeing the dreaded blue screen of death & it's no longer under warranty... i'll be trying some troubleshooting tomorrow if i can get some guidance from one of my techie friends on the east coast, but i was thinking that i should also get some names of sf-based consultants/shops with whom anyone has had good experiences... can anyone recommend someone?

Loon, there's a high probability that your wife's laptop hard drive is about to die. If the laptop is fast enough for her, you may want to just go on ebay ,newegg.com, or some other online shop and buy a new, larger HDD. That's what I did for my wife's laptop. It works fine, except now the keys are starting to go...
