woodshedding

"Woodshedding" means to cloister yourself away for a period of intense practice. It generally refers to music but could be used for anything. I'm currently reading a book about John Coltrane (A Love Supreme, The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album) and it's pretty inspiring. Coltrane's father, uncle and grandparents all died when he was 13. He became extremely shy and withdrawn as a teenager and would spend hours and hours of solitary time with his horn. Throughout his masterful years of gigging, recording and jamming, between 1940 and 1967, a consistent theme for Coltrane was his inner drive and ability to woodshed. After playing a three hour gig Miles talked about how Coltrane went immediately to his hotel room for a few more hours of practice. In the late 50's Coltrane got really into heroin and hard-alcohol. Miles eventually kicked him out of his band because Coltrane kept, "pulling that junkie shit." Soon after that Coltrane quit the smack cold turkey and experienced a powerful resurgence in his passion, focus and work ethic. He started playing sometimes 8 or 12 hours a day. Ravenous for musical knowledge, he consumed huge amounts of mathematical theory, world music, unusual tempos and rhythms, etc. He would simultaneously steer his own unique voice while critically observing and obsessively learning the voices and philosophies of many many others. Pushing and pushing for betterment. Striving for some spiritual, elegant, edge-tearing melodic expression. Like Miles, Coltrane never stayed satisfied with his current sound, but instead always sought evolution, growth and change. Pushing upward and outward, absorbing as much beauty and freshness as possible from the jazz and musical communities. Coltrane felt that inner fire. A true inspiration.

anyhoo.. i'm planning to woodshed this weekend. stoked!

Surprisingly fun session last night at OB until it got near pitch dark and my buddy mentioned to me that the "sharks have been hungry lately" just before catching a wave in and leaving me out there for another 10 minutes completely freaked out and remembering how my fish looked just like a seal from underneath.

hey peeps,

great lead today, e, good luck in the shed this weekend.

i am back from some travel on the east coast, and was greeted upon my return with the dreaded blue screen of death. posted this last night and got a few replies, thanks, please chime in if anyone has additional advice...

offtopic semi-desperate plea for help: can anyone recommend any local windows computer repair dude/dudettes? my wife's dell laptop is acting up, seeing the dreaded blue screen of death & it's no longer under warranty... i'll be trying some troubleshooting tonight if i can get some guidance from one of my techie friends on the east coast, but i was thinking that i should also get some names of sf-based consultants/shops with whom anyone has had good experiences... can anyone recommend someone?

Nice, fun waves this a.m. The fog sure is a little eerie though. Held off on the arvo yesterday: when I got home wave quality looked poor--and then it magically cleaned up. Weird. Will take a closer look this evening.

Posted by: amigoism at June 29, 2005 10:56 AM

Where is everyone surfing these "fun" waves? I don't seem to see them in the morning when I drive around looking.

Maybe I have wave googles on. Or, maybe......

I think I have surfed OB twice in the last month.

GREAT header E and sweet pic Bagel. You paint that? It is my wallpaper now. Niiice.

always amazes me how those guys would delve so deep into the mathematical theory etc.

I wish I had time to woodshed myself. I wish i actually had a woodshed. Then i would shape boards and play tunes all day.

Drolling over this all morning:

Posted by: Kaiser at June 29, 2005 11:11 AM

loon -- Not sure on a windows guy but if you have stuff on the laptop backed up, try reinstalling Windows. A lot of times, what seems like problems with the hardware (your laptop) is actually problems with the software (Windows, etc.). I'd give that a try before dropping the bucks on a repair service.

Posted by: mwsf at June 29, 2005 11:21 AM

Kaiser! what are the numbers on that stick?!

Posted by: Hb at June 29, 2005 11:26 AM

Well I found some good ones a little drive away. Not as clean as yesterday, a bit more close-outty, but enough fun ones in the mix to make it worthwhile. Not quite hollow, but actual faces and so on. Fun to get reacquainted with my regular shortboard on good waves after my "skills" have developed a little bit. Three guys out when I arrived, but they left within an hour; I started reflecting that surfing alone in non-tiny stuff while my wife is away is not necessarily the most responsible parenting maneuver. So I paddled in...after a few more waves.

Musically, since I was 12, when I started on the guitar, I've always had a few songs that I play almost exclusively at any one time, rather than focusing on new techniques or whatever. This has led to knowing a bunch of songs very well, but having very little talent or musical knowledge.

Question for Niceness: when driving a rental car from San Diego into N. Baja, do I NEED insurance? It would be just a day trip. Also, do I do this with the car rental agency (or should I not mention my plans to them) and just pick up insurance at one of the places off the border exit? If I'm going early in the morning, will the insurance places be open? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Posted by: Walker at June 29, 2005 11:39 AM

ya, thanks dudes. and thanks for asking bbr! im actually having a show next thursday in the city. its at Cafe Royale, this wine bar that my friend curates all the art at..ive been working on the painting for a while and im pretty stoked on it..heres the flyer, i was gonna post it like tomorrow or next week but haaay..i would be stoked if you all could make it..the flyer shows the painting not in an unfinished state but my dogs in there...

and e ill be wood/plastershedding it all saturday, if you need a break stop by man..

Posted by: bagel at June 29, 2005 11:51 AM

I thought that ALL rental places down there strickly say "don't take our ride to mexi" I guess you could still do it though. You can get insurance there at the bouder in that last town off the highway. You can see their signs off the road and theres a few to choose from. I'd check with whom ever you are renting from to make sure you can take it down there

Posted by: V70T5 at June 29, 2005 11:51 AM

Walker,
Yes if you tell the rental agency that you are going beneath the border they will charge for both American and Mexican insurance. The Mexican insurance is generally about the same rate as the actual car rental. Not all rental agencies allow you to take cars across the border so you should call ahead to confirm.

Note the one time I did not get the insurance I got caught in a flash flood and the car filled up with water right in the Tijuana hood by the border. I basically got to buy a frigging Kia.

The moral of the story is buy the insurance...the crime near the border these days is worse than ever before. There is a full blown drug war & crack cocaine epidemic going on right now in Nuevo Laredo with some spill over into TJ and other border states. Get the insurance and be safe.

Posted by: Reality Check at June 29, 2005 11:52 AM

the flyer shows the painting IN an unfinished state but my dogs in there... duh

Posted by: bagel at June 29, 2005 11:55 AM

woodshedding has a different connotation where i come from, i.e. don't make me take you out to that woodshed!
walker, get insurance. buy it online. i like this site:www.bajabound.com. then you just print out the slip and your set to go
don't see any need to tell the rental car company your plans, but they may be able to track the car anyway these days. i think it's fine if you're less than 50k from the border. if more than that, might be an issue.
wish i could have surfed this morning. damn car problems. who knew it would set off a relay alarm to disconnect the battery. i'm jonesing!

Posted by: steamwand at June 29, 2005 11:55 AM

kloo, sometimes being a responsible parent bites.

I made a promise years ago to Mom, then my wife with a nod to the kid, about surfing alone.

I kept true for years until I came upon 4-6' A- frame peaks on a 80 degree offshore wind day in late Septemeber a few years ago along the SM coast. I had scored at a reef down the road, but my time as an un-employed surfer was coming to an end. I went for it as those days are so few anyway. I was more worried about sharks and bleeding to death, then drowning. Sure enough, driving home after the session, the phone rang, I got the job and here I sit. Don't tell my wife though OK.

Posted by: weems at June 29, 2005 12:03 PM

Weems, nice find! A little large for what I am looking for. That looks like a gunny-funboard no?

Walker, get the insurance at the rental car agency for sure. I think you can get down to about 90 miles into Baja with the insurance from the car rental places. If you have never driven thru TJ, you will soon realize that insurance is a good thing there. It is a maze with crazy TJ drivers all over the place.

HB, I think that is a 6'2'' but that is all I know. If I can round up some more measurements, I'll post them in a bit.

Here are some more to droll over though:

Thanks for the SD / Mexi border advice.

Are these bonzer pics taken at the new surf shop that just opened in the Sunset? Will a retro-board surf shop remain sustainable or is it a sign of the times.

My experience is that I try out retro boards when the conditions are small / junky and NO board can make bad waves good. When it's good, I want to be on a modern thruster.

The four fin bat tail design coming out of Santa Cruz looks interesting. Has anyone tried it?

Those quad-fin bat tail Stretch surfboards are a direct ripoff of the design create by Cole Simler. Cole Surfboards out of San Clemente.

"Stretch" didnt mention this in his full page ad/giveaway in the latest TW Surf mag. even the ridges along the rail. an absolute ripoff.

there are a couple of us surfing them at OB now. KILLER BOARDS, btw!

Posted by: j at June 29, 2005 01:34 PM

Surfboard innovation is evolutionary. Credit is given when credit is deserved. Jobson's stealth-tail (bat tail shaped) Twinzers from the mid-80's far predate the Simler/Stretch designs. The Bonzer predates the Twinzer...and so it goes.

Posted by: at June 29, 2005 01:35 PM

Cole Simler is one hell of a shaper, surfer(especially for being a big guy) and genuine good guy. I would still get boards from him if he wasn't such a slacker on customs for non pros. Last custom I got took about 5 months which is just too long to wait.

Stoked to see that he is still doing some cutting edge shit!

Yah, Cole is a rippin shaper and great guy. Especially when he used to tote around that little blondie around w/him to show off at all of the SLO County spots. To bad there so far away now.

Posted by: MBTrash at June 29, 2005 01:47 PM

It seems to me that Cole ripped off Matt Moore who was shaping thruster battails back in 81?
Surfboard tail shapes are not patened intellectual property in the first place.

I personally witnessed a top SC shaper ask Tom Curren at the Stubbies Contest if he could check out his board. Tom handed the board to the shaper who quickly copied the template on cardboard in his van. 2 weeks later, many of SC finest where riding on a board "just like tommy's".

Battails are not that durable, those pointed brittle edges in the tail tend crack and ding easily. They look cool but offer no performance over a squash.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at June 29, 2005 01:56 PM

I hear ya on Cole lagging. damn, that guy shapes a good board, but people arent gonna sit around and wait 6-9 months anymore.

Yeah, I was checking out some of the Michel Junod boards in Santa Cruz. There were some nice boards--one with a battail. Question: How is turning and/or down-the-line-speed affected with a battail. Is it any looser than a squash? Just wondering. Never ridden one.

Posted by: amigoism at June 29, 2005 02:08 PM

I don't think a "retro only" shop will work unless they are slinging art and all that garb as well. I haven't check the new store out but if the rent is high and the margins are low, don't expect much profit from them. Not much margin on a surfboard, we all know that. But much more on a "retro" ride then a thruster or funboard.

On the bat tail boards, I read that article as well. Those look pretty cool. Having Anthony "Smartest guy in SC" Tsahnick tooting them as well can't hurt coming off a Mavs win. I hear Rusty is shaping them as well. New trend I guess. Go with what sells? I would love to try one though.

My short list:
- new shortboard for fall
- new egg w/ bonzer setup
- bat tail, 4 fin jobber

I can never catch up to my own demands! I guess I better get a cup of joe and hunker down for the afternoon.

Posted by: Kaiser at June 29, 2005 02:30 PM

i have heard a battail is essentially the same as a swallow tail, theory is you turn of the little points so it combines squash tail and a pin tail, which would make it not as loose as a squash. in theory. i think.

some decent size at a not too far combo break last night. it looked bigger but also better shape and less crowded than it did on monday. heavy closeouts - i had my first 'which way is up' wipeout since the winter - but some decent waves with patience.

Posted by: vons at June 29, 2005 02:36 PM

I'm still waiting on my Campbell Bros. 6'8" bonzer, and when it arrives I've been told it won't be the color I asked for. I don't want to come down on Malcolm, so I'll spare you the details.

Posted by: steve-o at June 29, 2005 02:59 PM

Steve-o, when did you order it?

I don't think I will ever have the patience to wait for one! I'll have to buy off the rack or the like.

Posted by: Kaiser at June 29, 2005 03:06 PM

On the topic of custom board orders, here is a random plug for Steve Brom. I ordered a board at the end of April, he said I'd have it around the middle of June and I did. It's the right color, and the glass job is beautiful (beatty glassing). I think he shapes mostly traditional fish and single fins. He's a nice guy too, happy to chat over the phone.

Here's his website: www.surfenginez.com, there are a couple of goodies in there for the kaisers among us.

Posted by: eric at June 29, 2005 03:23 PM

Got to love that special moment when you watch the first wave of an outside set throw over [ in slo mo ] and go *boom* 2 ft from your head. Haven't been that obliterated in months. It's warbly and innocuous looking enough, but with brilliant timing and pinpoint accuracy you too can discover that winteresque feeling. Hint: make sure you take the WHOLE SET on the head, not just one wave. :P

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at June 29, 2005 03:24 PM

See that Brom, great boards by the way, puts his leash plus on one of the tails of his fish. You guys ever ride a board with the plug there? Seems like if it snaps back at you the fins would turn it away from your noggin. Any other reasons?

Posted by: Hb at June 29, 2005 03:34 PM

Give me sick thruster, forget about the retro stuff.

Posted by: at June 29, 2005 04:02 PM

sharkbait - even better when an outside set catches the lineup unawares ending in a communal bonk...ahh, special moments indeed.

Posted by: flades at June 29, 2005 04:03 PM

I'm pretty sure that Craigslist board belongs to the fella that posts as Stinkeye on the Surfermag BB. It used to belong to the guy (OT)who's quiver is featured in the new TSJ (check Undercurrents).

You can now order Campbell Bros. boards through Moonlight Glassing. That's where those board pics are from. They're helping Malcolm stay a little more organized (and since they glass them, the color requests probably won't be lost in translation).

bagel.. siiick paintings!!! thanks for posting.

all those surfboards like awesome.

those blond bikini bimbos are gross! imho.

i know many of y'all are hippy-haters, but i've been listening to Trane and Thelonius and Kenny Burrell and all these techy jazz hounds all day.. then i just listened to this funked-out, groovy Phish jam and daamnn!! Phish can throw it down. A little hint if you hate phish. ALWAYS fast-forward the lyrics. ALWAYS!!! ONLY play songs that are over 7 minutes long. Go immediately to the jam and let it play. I've been listening to phish for a long time and learned this important lesson a while ago. On my ipod i don't have any phish songs less than 14 minutes long and i never ever listen to the lyrics.

anyhoo.. siiiick!

Posted by: e at June 29, 2005 04:54 PM

I ordered my board back in the beginning of March, I think? Anyway, it was pre-Moonlight assisted days. To Malcolm's defense, he had travelled to England to shape some boards for a shop there, and when he got back he probably just forgot to tell the glassers to put any tint in my board. Oh well, I knew it would take a while for the board, and he did offer to let me surf the no-color and give me a credit for it if I wanted to re-order a board with resin-tint. He's a straight up guy, and if the board rides well I may take him up on his offer.

Posted by: steve-o at June 29, 2005 04:54 PM

dude e, thank YOU for letting me plug myself!

..huh?

also speaking of ipods im putting mine on shuffle for the show so look out!

one more, i think that phish now just has such a, how you say, stigma? or image? that some people are turned off. imho. i was actually stoked on that one album with the orange on it when i heard it a long time ago. i was also heading to a dead show in vegas at the time. i also witnessed a hippy right next to me at the show pick a booger and eat it.

beach was surfable and pretty decent at sunset. Definitely people out although the fog was so thick you could barely see.

Leash plug on one of the fish's tails is a good design imho because you don't end up standing on the plug. Those boards are so short, you end up with your back foot at the very edge and if there's a leash plug there it'll mess you up. CI does that with their fishes.
