cranky and foggy... but... a few waves on offer
Not your storybook surf conditions.
Smaller, dumpy and disorganized.
Onshores but not crazy onshores.
No noticeable takers through the north end as of 7:30.
Probably pretty fun once out there.
waist to shoulder high. a few bigger sets.
Crumbly.
This weekend witnessed some summertime surf opportunity.
In the days when offshore winds seem a thing of cruel fantasy the weekend's conditions were highly highly doable.
Some kind of groundswell made its presence known yesterday morning.
Overhead sets of walled-up goodness marched through.
Tough to find the corners.
Bagel dropped in and raced down the line on a few.
Mouse in my fucking sock drawer this morning!
Opened it up and saw the little bugger sniffing.
Closed it real fast then contemplated eviction strategy.
Ended up just pulling the drawer out and running outside.
The little biatch leapt out of the drawer as i was exiting my door., fell from 5 ft. in the air onto the floor then scurried right back in the house!!! grrr!!!
No offense to animal lovers, but... that thing is gonna die tonight!
someone wrote asking where he might purchase Barry McGee art. I think they have a few pieces at the new Mollusk surf shop at 46th and Irving. I loved the Barry McGee stuff that used to be on the walls of the Justice League. He has some paintings on the N-Judah stop at Sunset Boulevard too. And also at 7th (6th) and Market on one of the empty store fronts, I always see that one on my bike while riding to work.
Yeah, I almost passed surfing yesterday cuz of a whole bunch of stuff to do and the waves mixed with wind and fog in the am just didn't look inviting. Around 2:00 I couldn't take it so I went out for a what I thought was just a "utility session". I was surprised to see those OH waves. Ended up getting some of the longest fastest waves in quite a while and had a blast. No crowds either. Just a couple of my neighbors. So why drive? Sometimes I just feel a need I guess.
Saturday morning I took a drive south of slide. No wind or fog and from the cliffs, the set waves looked at least head high and had some shoulders. From the water it was a different story. The waves were jacking up from backwash offering up mostly suicide drops onto a shallow sand bar. I got skunked and headed up to Lindy where the sun was shining and the waves looked ok even through the crowd. So I got a half a dozen funnish rides and headed home.
Posted by: Dennis at July 18, 2005 10:12 AMGot some ho-hum waves over the weekend. Nothing exciting, but better than going to the dentist.

Greetings from San Miguel de Allende. What I'm doing so far inland is, well, it's all part of Mrs. Spiderman's grand scheme. And, if you've ever met her you know it's best not to ask too many questions. One thing's for sure, I'm a whole lot closer to Pueto Escondido than the rest of you sitting in the usual line-up.
Posted by: Spiderman at July 18, 2005 10:20 AMSURFER SUSPENDED DUE TO POSITIVE DRUG TEST
Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Rules and Discipline Judge, Robert Gerard announced today that Brazilian surfer, Neco Padaratz (currently ranked 27 on the World Championship Tour) has been suspended from professional surfing, effective immediately, until 1 January 2006.
Padaratz will also be stripped of all ASP rating points (on both the WCT and the second tier World Qualifying Series) earned thus far during the 2005 season.
The decision to suspend Padaratz resulted after a drug test, administered by French Drug Testing authorities during the 2004 World Championship Tour event in Hossegor, France showed the athlete had taken performance enhancing anabolic steroids.
Padaratz, who fully cooperated with the testing and the ensuing investigation, claimed that he had taken the prohibited steroids as part of a course of self-treatment for a lingering back injury.
Regardless of his plea, the steroids were in fact performance enhancing and thus it has triggered the ASP’s mandatory drug policy for the first time.
The 12-month suspension was made retroactive to 1 January 2005 due to a delay by French Drug Testing Authorities in confirming the test results to the ASP.
The ASP has a “zero tolerance” policy for performance enhancing drugs.
Gerard emphasised that the ASP and its athletes have a strong responsibility toward event sponsors, other athletes, and the sporting public to help ensure responsible athlete behaviour.
The ASP is the world governing body for professional surfing since 1976.

I guess I should come clean and confess to self-administered antihistimine use. If you suspected I was maybe breathing a little too freely out there, well you were right.
Picked the wrong area yesterday and didn't get much except plenty of paddling. Dennis, I had exactly that experience with suicide drops at the same spot a few days back.

Posted by: bbr at July 18, 2005 12:40 PMThis southy was very sloppy and messy everyday, at least where i surfed it. Got sick presumably from the red tide/dirty water. Man it sucks to play in your playground and get sick from it. See so much trash on my way along the coast to work on Monday mornings mostly at the spots where the bbq pits are and where most of the ghetto goes to the beach. Not saying the ghetto litters more than others but it sure seems like it. Disgusting down there. And then we surf in it.

Posted by: Bruce at July 18, 2005 01:24 PMsantana interview about Jimi:
UV: Have you got a favourite Hendrix song or album?
Posted by: e at July 18, 2005 01:25 PMCS: I think all the first three are still my favourites like anybody else. The first three albums by Jimi - it was like being captured and put into a space ship and they take you on a trip and they bring you back instead of like jumping in a Mercedes or a Rolls Royce. I especially always like it when Jimi Hendrix would play the song and then he go on to, uh, Chainsaw Massacre Tazmanian Devil Aurora Borealis Galaxy - I like it when he start with the feedback. And I saw Stevie Ray do it one time too. I'm sure he did it many times but I only saw him do it one time were he where the guitar became like an Aurora Borealis and all this colours of sound were screaming out of it even though he wasn't putting his fingers on it. That's kinda like invoking ghosts or something and that's my favourite part that I miss about Jimi is when he would open up certain channels and let certain demons and angels dance together, you know what I mean - that it was beyond 'B' flat or 'C' flat. That's when it's music to me. Anybody can play music just like anybody can think. Very few people are conscious and very few people can do something beyond the note. So thank God that Jimi had that kind of spirit that...the foundation was the blues but he also was a very cosmic person [laughs].
You know to this day I haven't heard anybody... I mean, I heard a lot of people pick up what Jimi completed or he was doing but I haven't heard anybody complete it or really pick it up. Not only from the volume or the approach to the sound or the tone but the philosophy behind it... Jimi didn't just play like that because he could strangle a Stratocaster or a Marshall, he played like that because he saw it a certain way and he took certain things that made his spirit be stronger upon his playing. Otherwise, anyone could do it - you just pick it up, lift it off from the CDs, you know, or the records. No, you had to have some kind of thing like the Blues Brothers' mission from God or something, you know. But you have to have some kind of inner fueling, inner anger or inner passion, some kind of really, really emotional spill-over on your playing otherwise it won't sound like that even if he had the same amplifier and the same guitar and everything - it still won't sound that way. I crave to try to create an album that basically goes that way, more like Sun Ra and Sonny Sharrock and Jimi Hendrix, you know, with a little bit of lyrics and very little vocals but mainly the electric guitar and the Hammond organ and the congas. Tell stories of interplanetary or galactical or celestial time rather than just earth time. I think that's what Jimi Hendrix used to call 'Sky Church Music'.
My bad. Good to have somebody watching my back b-stah!
Posted by: Dennis at July 18, 2005 01:27 PMhot damn.. sonny sharrock (sweet butterfingers) can lay it down!
Posted by: e at July 18, 2005 01:35 PMYo e, cool interview. Reminds me of a brief conversation with Bagel and girlfriend at the SS party. A person can study an art and understand an art and can apply the techniques of an art. But some people just have something special that gives the art a life of it's own. It comes from inside that person and can't be learned or taught. It draws you in and inspires feelings you couldn't feel before. Carlos has it too though I haven't heard anything new from him that truely inspires me. But when he plays, I feel like I've reached nirvana.
Posted by: Dennis at July 18, 2005 01:51 PMI didn't get that from Bagel but me and the dog did have an interesting conversation...
Posted by: blakestah at July 18, 2005 02:06 PM"Sky Church" is the tag given to the SRO concert hall at the EMP in Seattle thanks to e and carlos it's all coming together now
Posted by: janice at July 18, 2005 02:15 PMI saw Sonny Sharrock at the Knitting Factory in NY back in '90. He brings Santana's distorted, long sustain, electric tone to a jazz setting. Pretty cool cosmic jazz fusion stuff, if you're into Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, Hendrix etc. Check out the tune "Who does she hope to be?" for a melodic ballad, or "Promises Kept" for a more uptempo tune, both off the "Ask the Ages" album (Elvin Jones on drums!).
Posted by: davo at July 18, 2005 02:36 PMSaturday morning was pretty fun at the spot Bruce took shots at on Friday. Relatively light crowd, no aggro rippers, just the usual older crew. Felt good to get in a few turns on the rail...it's been a while.
Posted by: davo at July 18, 2005 02:46 PMWhat did the dog say, b-stah? Speaking of dog, e, you're welcome to borrow mine for mouse scaring. In Oregon we had a lone mouse who lived deep underneath the refrigerator amongst hijacked fridge magnets, the bugger. My dog had a blast regulating that rodent. Then we left for a week and returned to an apartment that had been subject to extreme revenge poop attack. He even ran over the hangers in my closet.
No surf this weekend AND dentist appt, so played hookey for mental health. Happiness is cancelling appts from a surf lot, then looking over and seeing the person in the car next to you doing the same thing. Couple dozen 1-2 foot glassy log rollers. Fun. The fishing trawler could have moved a bit farther away though...

Posted by: e at July 18, 2005 04:40 PMSucks that your car got broken into. No sympathy on the stolen pot card though...just a hunch but I'm guessing that the prescription was written by a questionable "doctor". Seems to me that about 85% of medical marijuana users are under 30, are pretty damn active and wouldn't be taking this medicine if it weren't for the unfortunate side effect of getting baked.
I've got no problem with people smoking pot (for the sake of disclosure, I stopped about 10 years ago), but don't pretend that it's for medical reasons...it just makes it harder for the few people who really do reap some medical benefits for true ailments. Is there any question why the establishment finds the medical marijuana legislation dubious?
Sorry about that...soapbox dismounted.
PS: If you really do have a legitimate ailment, I apologize and none of these comments (except for the break-in sympathy) are aimed at you...just to the population at large.
