monster jam
out of the surf loop.
4 hours mega jam last night.
Saxamaphone player in the mix.
Raging through the Headhunter's Chameleon.
That song rules.
"Smoke two joints" by the Toyes, popularized by Sublime.
A little Peter Gunn with the horn fuming through that twisted, space-age lead melody.
Call and response between guitar and the sax.
Two full drum kits laying it down thick and steady.
Took one of our old songs and tried to get "Coltrane" with it.
By that i mean late Coltrane.
Sheets of sound Coltrane.
Interstellar Space Coltrane.
Coltrane when he heard the reaper approaching.
Hemorrhaging the boundaries of decency and taste.
The band working together through this angry, bulbous abstraction.
Screeching and wailing.
then to Machine Gun by Hendrix.
Tried to do it justice but it's impossible to approach the master expressionist.
Tried to get that feeling of hard-core machine gun fire going off.. like "Chucka Chucka Chucka Chucka Chuck!"
Guitar all distorted and bleeding.
Morbid and evil with the lyrics,"
"Machine Gun... TEARING MY BODY ALL APART"
Basically screaming that last bit.
Thinking about standing in some jungle situation in the pouring rain. War and death and explosions all around. Fucking machine gun fire going crazy. Standing in the middle of the field with crying people all around while machine gun fire rips into my body.. CHUCKA CHUCKA CHUCKA CHUCKA CHUCK! Blood splattering everywhere.. Cackling spirit-demons floating in the air laughing at me. Death and hatred. Dark stormy war and confusion.
"I AIN'T AFRAID OF YOUR MESS NO MORE, BABE
I AIN'T AFRAID NO MORE
AFTER A WHILE YOUR CHEAP TALK DON'T EVERN CAUSE ME PAIN
SO LET YOUR BULLETS FLY LIKE RAIN!!!"
Tried to get that anger and darkness across in the music. Raging emotional pain and hurt. But also the soul lifting up and beyond all that bullshit. let your bullets fly like rain muther fucker. they don't even cause me pain!

Went out this morning. It sucked.

Posted by: steamwand at August 12, 2005 09:41 AMIt was a prolific time for John Coltrane; for several days in October of 1960, he and his band hunkered down in Atlantic Studios and pounded out two albums worth of legendary material. The first album released was My Favorite Things; the second, Coltrane’s Sound, which came out a year after the first disc.

Wanted: Duck killer
Sadistic driver intentionally plows into hapless fowl
(08-12) 09:48 PDT Campbell (SF Chronicle) -- A car wash in the South Bay is offering a reward for the identification of a man who deliberately ran over and killed 10 of the ducks that have been an attraction at the business for years.
A grainy surveillance tape at the Delta Queen Classic Car Wash -- a “theme” wash shaped like a Mississippi riverboat -- shows a man in his late teens or early 20s driving through the parking lot three or four times, aiming for the animals and running them down.
BVB maybe? They might not have been native.

that waves looked worse than they've looked in a while this morning. no more shape. whats up for the weekend?
Posted by: bagel at August 12, 2005 10:27 AMWent to the beach this am to get a close-up look at the waves. Turned around and went home for coffee and news. At least the coffee was good.
What ever happened to great guitar players in cool outfits? Jimi had it all going on didn't he? I miss him. If I could pick an era to remain in it would be the late 60's. I realize it was partly my age but the music had so much more meaning to me then. I loved the combination of folk song protest messages mixed blues chords and screaming psychadelic sounds. Everything was going good until Crocadile Rock.
Posted by: Dennis at August 12, 2005 10:30 AMHey kids,
Posted by: sf at August 12, 2005 10:38 AMCan we hold off on the "shark Sightings" at O.B. for like a month. Maybe we can post one a week from like October-December. Rumor has it that there was a full time resident around 15Ft. last winter. wasn't there?
15 dollars!?
Posted by: elton john at August 12, 2005 10:40 AMAnyone see the saltwater croc at the beach? It ate a surfer. I saws it with mine own eye.
Posted by: amigoism at August 12, 2005 10:45 AMThe good news is, 'THE" season is coming soon to a beach near and dear to us. What are you doing to prepare for it? Skating, running, swimming,...? Do you have your quiver all set? Dings all patched in the semi's. Camera gear ready?
Posted by: Dennis at August 12, 2005 10:52 AMMan, been a long time since I've been to a show...longer since I've been to a good one. Great review e, thanks for reminding me what I'm missing.
There were some ill-tempered sea bass at OB. Mr. Bigglesworth was not pleased.
Posted by: Andrew in Alameda at August 12, 2005 10:56 AMfirst post in frickin' ages! work has been keeping me too busy.
speaking of work, my employment loc is down by the car wash that was the scene of the duck massacre referenced above by anon. unbelieveable that someone would do that for kicks. i always found it amusing and cool the way the ducks would just mill around and hang out with the employees and patrons. i've been concerned that one of the ducks was going to get run-over one day (it's a busy traffic spot), but i never thought someone would bowl them down intentionally. it makes me sick. my fingers are crossed that they catch the driver and punish him as he deserves.
oh...i also, optimitically, made the drive to the beach today. like others here...i opted for P-n-a-e Point instead.

Posted by: antman at August 12, 2005 11:19 AMWell, SE Papa has been lighting up since 3am . . .
Camping with wifey last couple of days near Santa Cruz, and got some surfy ones yesterday somewhere in between with only light onshores. But not far south at Lleddaw, it was quite windy, and there were zillions of kiteboarders, including this guy who must have been 65, busting big airs and everything.

Posted by: auzzie man at August 12, 2005 01:30 PMMan, sharks suck. Everytime I hear about one, I wonder if I should stop going out to O.B. Does anyone know if any surfers got attacked by sharks at O.B.?
Posted by: MSG at August 12, 2005 01:53 PMThree years ago I was killed by a great white right in front of ***'*. That really sucked.
Any comments on Brad Gerlach's commentary from Surfline? I'd give my opinion but you've probably heard enough from me already.

Posted by: Kaiser at August 12, 2005 02:19 PMSaturday August 13, Sam George of Surfer Magazine will give a series of free speeches covering surfing know-how at the Linda Mar Taco Bell. From 10:00am to 10:30 he will cover "Finding your Stance." A 15-minute Chalupa break will then be followed by "It begins with a Fin Key." Though unconfirmed at this time, "Bad Vibe Bob" is slated to give a presentation on "Ancient Snacks of Indigenous Peoples" Those who stay around for the t-shirt raffle (featuring the names of the world's top 100 surf spots) can join in a group spiritual happening by paddling out together to form an aloha circle in front of the boathouse where Sam will dump a 50-gallon drum of used motor oil into the lineup as part of a protest and homage to the passing of the late Harry's in Baja, at the hand of a natural gas plant currently under construction. Niceness blogger regulars are encouraged to bring their own used motor oil ahead of time to donate to the event.

Posted by: fuck ball at August 12, 2005 03:08 PMyo dennis...
i had to close my eyes and listen to the gerlach thing
because thos e SICK barrels in the background were
a huge distraction.
i am with him. and before i get skewered...i am with
him in the sense that if the sport is going to go x games,
which it will. all the publicly traded companies WANT and
NEED that (quik, hurley[nike], volcom). it SHOULD be with
surfer input. last time a bunch of corporate wonks tried to
BRING SURFING TO THE PUBLIC it ended up in a wavepool
in allentown, pa. this way at least the surfers will have a say.
AND the game format really is a BETTER contest format.
more waves get ridden in a given chunk of contest time.
less wasted waves rolling through with two guys out.
plus like other sports (say ANY college sport) the athletes
will be getting some $$. as opposed to the ncaa or the ips
or the wct.
change happens. gerlach sounds like a doofus but he has been
pro since 89? 0r 88? and he saw the bad and the good tours
give it a whirl see what happens.
bottom line to the rant.....NOTHING will make surfing easier.
and that is what will keep the lazy, video-gaming snots from
pursuing it for longer than a week or a summer.
Posted by: korewin at August 12, 2005 03:10 PMsorry for the diatribe.
gerlach had a great style

i couldnt listen to him talking on that thing though had to turn it off
Posted by: bagel at August 12, 2005 03:15 PMGood answer Korwin. His delivery was rough but he has the right idea regarding surfing as the profession. It would be more attractive to larger groups of people/spectators if they had a hometown team, which would eventually put more money into the pockets of pros and vendors alike.

Posted by: bagel at August 15, 2005 11:53 AMthat is a sweet dog. i drove from kellys to montara yesterday and ended up at the north end of lindy around noon because the sun was out. It was better than it looked from the road. you know how epic lindy gets in the summer time. my sister went to the white stripes show on friday and said it was good but strange to see them in such a big place. we saw them at the warfield a couple of years ago and it was a lot of fun, my ears hurt for a while though

Posted by: Hb at August 15, 2005 01:01 PMha, rad HB, is that why he cracked that dude? i definately would not want that guy to punch me in the face. i call him a diva cause he took a 5 minute break in the middle of a song because a big bouncy ball made it to the stage. i imagined him stomping his feet backstage for 5 minutes. than he came back and started the song over. than played the raadest blues shit ever heard live for sure.
Posted by: bagel at August 15, 2005 01:14 PMIve ever heard live..for sure
Posted by: bagel at August 15, 2005 01:15 PMIt was something like that. Maybe he grabbed Meg's ass or something, I forget.
Cool on the show, they start a 4 day stand here at the Greek, gonna go for sure. What a little bitch stopping mid-song. I'm definitely bring some beach balls.

Posted by: bagel at August 15, 2005 01:47 PMA little crumbly out there lunchtime, but not REALLY tiny, and honestly not bad at all, at least on a well-chosen sandbar---props to sharkbait for the beach savvy.
It was not, however, much like this:

Posted by: kloo at August 15, 2005 02:16 PMWell that pic seems to have disappeared. It was a cool-looking wave. Just say "whoa!" to yourself, and you'll have the basic idea.
Posted by: kloo at August 15, 2005 02:34 PMsuprisingly fun sesh - thanks to extremely low expectations and the fact that I didn't get skunked *again* on one of the more fickle sandbars.
