Timo sent this email about another car break-in!!
While surfing, my 97 Nissan truck was broken into on Saturday August 13th at 11:30 a.m. at G.Highway and Ortega. The criminal stole my clothes (even my freakin' underwear), my wallet, my digital camera, and used all three credit cards within an hour of the theft.
The short man is of an asian/hispanic mix (about 5'3 to 5'5) with tattoos on both arms, a shaved/bald head and a scar under his left eye (about an inch long) and was seen in the area. He's about 25 to 30 years old.
After following the trail of credit card purchases shortly after the theft, I was able to track down a proprietor of a store who clearly remembers this asshole buying 100 bucks worth of cigarrettes with my atm/check card. He was the one who gave me a detailed description of the thief.
Please broadcast this description so that surfers are aware of him and when they see him, they should call the police (Taraval dispatch) immediately.

A sting operation is clearly needed here. Get three groups of people together. Car #1 parks a car in the area of the offender and goes surfing leaving some valuables in sight. Car #2 parked prior to the setup car on the ave but in sight of car #1 watches for the thief. Car #3 is one block away and stays in touch with car #2 via cell phone. Let the thief break into the car and watch as he leaves in his own car. #2 and #3 will get the license number and description of the thief and call the police. Then follow the thief from a safe distance to a location of purchase. Call the police again to give the current location. This is happening too often.
I think it may be the same theif that breaks into cars near my house when the ground swells arrive with offshore winds. Stay clear of this area in the fall ;)

The thief obviously broke the window, rifled through the clothes for a wallet, and was gone.
For the safety of everyone involved, I think it is better to avoid surfing in the Avenues for a while...

i had a short but very sweet session a bit south last night. with the south swell & the tide i thought i was jetty-bound but she was flat like pancake. wound up scoring some inside grinders elsewhere. 5 guys were leaving as i arrived and one dude almost left but reported that it picked up right when i got there so he came back out. sweet...
i was riding blakestah's newest creation - a thruster setup with rotating side fins. he rigged them on a widish 6'4" rocket sled and it cooks. between the limited swell and my limited time & abilities, i haven't had the chance to crank any big turns, but after last night and a prior session at kelly's i am very confident that the design works...nice work db.

A hydrodynamic wing theory is that you should have an elliptical distribution of lift on a wing. The amount of lift near the wing base is greatest, and falls off with the square of the distance to the tip. This minimizes the tip eddy kind of drag called "induced drag". For these thruster fins I made a plot of the width versus depth, and adjusted it until it matched an ellipse. I made the rake similar to a G5 fin, and tried it out. Those were on the board Loon has now. They were a little too pivot-ty, but close to being correct. For the Merrick I took the same template and raked it a little more to get rid of the pivot-nature in the fin. It worked, they are like butter now. The degree to which they feel pivot-like is almost identical to the normal thruster fins.
The downside is the tip is a little pointy, and I don't really like that. I have to make a new set to compare originals to my fins. Actually, just as a vindication, I'm pretty sure mine are better (in a rotating system), and the original Merricks are better in a fixed fin system....

i'd suggest rounding the leading edge of your foils at the base. sharp leading edges are good for straight lines and pure speed. but since your laterally pivoting fins quickly the rounded leading edges and draft forward profiles absorb change of direction better and cavitate less. your actually slowing down the water so it stays attached to the fin. where as a bladey fin slices quickly allowing air/turbeulence to build up increase the chance for cavitation.
this trend in foils is being incorporated by many of the top wave fins for windsurfing...again. it's an old concept that my team extensively test in the water with good results. my crude lab tests backed it up as well.
sorry, foils get me HOT!

3to5, the fins are supposed to be radius'ed at half max camber on the leading edge...it is mostly rounded in the leading edge foil. Probably the very base didn't get done so well, better fire the guy who did the foil grinding (anytime you wanna give him a lesson speak up). I do all my rail fins with a rounded leading edge and max camber 20-25% back from the leading edge, taper to about 1-1.5 mm thick on the trailing edge.
The fins are straight with the stringer when you go straight. You turn left, they go / /. You turn right, they go \ \ . The outside rail fin rotates further, to bleed off any drive from it. The inside rail fin has a closely controlled end-stop so that you have 1/4" toe-in on the inside rail fin when you turn.

Was there any particular reason for setting the outside fins up parallel? and waht advanatge would there be to this and settign them up intially on the angled alignments?

In a turn, the inside rail fin and rear fin are in EXACTLY the same position as they normally are on a thruster. The outside rail fin toes OUT, to reduce drag on the outside rail.
If you go straight after you come out of a turn, the rail fins again turn so that they are parallel to the stringer. This minimizes drag in between turns, while allowing good fin action in turns.
The other benefit is that the board catches waves earlier, because the rail fin drag is reduced.

Put another way, use my system, and you can surf, just as easily, a board 3-4 inches shorter. Or you can fly on a board of the same length...your choice.

I think it is better, but not earth shattering. The ability to drop 3-4 inches in board length and maintain speed will make a bigger difference to most people, I think. Thrusters bottom turn extremely well already.

That wasn't the suggestion at all....if you use the same size board you get a gain in paddling speed...if you use a smaller board you get the benefits of a smaller board's maneuverability while still being able to paddle it just as well as your bigger board with fixed fins.
And, like I said, it is a small effect, equivalent to a few inches of board length. But I think that translates to an easily perceivable performance advantage for most people.

staying on the rail seems like a better plan that pushing
past it to the flat portion of the board. i would think that
a wider tail (more loose) more planing would be more appropriate for a fin that tall. also what about bigger (taller really) center fin? something more to compensate
or catch the benefit of those side fins? that center fin
looks kinda pointless being so close to the other fins
and so short.

And as to whether it bogs...you can ride it and be the judge....keel style fins work differently when the fin can rotate. Also, the fins are canted with a normal thruster cant, which will decrease the bog factor.
I grant you it is entirely possible board design may optimize differently for the system, but it feels just like a thruster, only a bit faster.
Also, that board has the widest tail of any board I own at 14.25 inches.

B-stah - I've noticed on my Flyer, the rails pull in sharply right where the side fins begin. I think this may help reduce volume of the board to compensate for volume of the fins.

So if I read you correctly, and think about it a bit, On a standard thruster it is the outside fin that is producing the most drag through the turns - accepting the fact that as you lay the board over the outside fin also tends to be tilted out of the water. This is especially prominent on big bottom turns, where you can often see the outside fin half out of the water in photos. Maybe this explains why your bottom turns felt similar, the drag is about the same as a standard thruster simply cause your nicely aligned outside fin is pretty much out of the water. I would imagine that this out of the water effect would be less pronounced during 'normal' turns on the wave face, and thus the differnce between the RFS and standard thruster is more prominent.
