waves and invisible spirits
Surface didn't look too bad and the wind wasn't going crazy this morning. I'm out of the loop so don't have the first-hand info. Mostly likely Dennis, Blakestah, Kaiser or Kloo got out there??
Imagine if you could become invisible whenever you wanted. You could also pass through any wall or structure. You could also fly at light speed and whip around the world to your heart's content. Haunting around SF on a weekend night you might fly through some happenin' house parties in the lower haight or soma. Cruise into the locked backrooms and observe the mischievous goings-on. Another power that you hold is that you can seep into the internal consciousness of any person at any time, ala Neuromancer or Being John Malkovich. So you might fly over to the Olympic Training Center in the Rockies and jump off the ski jump while inside the consciousness of one of the world's best. Or maybe lock inside the mind of Noam Chomsky as he delivers a lecture at MIT. Or maybe Cheney as he rules the world? or maybe Peter North for a film shoot? Or maybe to the Indies Trader 4 Helicopter inside Slater's mind as he cruises above the Mentawais looking for mysto reefs. Spot a lurching, funnelling, uncharted right.. then land on the beach and paddle out for a solo session in crystal-glass perfection. Get barrelled deeper than you ever thought possible. See and experience the lines that the master draws. Feel the quickness and athletic prowess of the truly gifted. shred.

sc sent an email about the car thief!!!
hey--
i followed the thief the other day for 4 blocks. he got pissed when he realized that i was following him. i called the cops right away and gave them his license plate number. he was driving a beater two door toyota. red. the grill was painted red. he was pretty thug looking, fitting the description mentioned in previous posts. his plate was 5JGB323 (orsomething very close to that...). the cops repsonded quickly but i'm not sure if they got him or not. i contacted surfpulse/blakestah with his plate information but i guess they can't post that or something. it was blatantly obvious what he was up to...hence my following him. he didn't look very friendly.

for the record, I have no official affiliation with surfpulse, and no one contacted me with plate info or a further description of the thief beyond what Timo sent in a week ago...
Posted by: blakestah at August 22, 2005 10:19 AMI had to be in the office at 6:15 this am so my beach drive-by was in the dark. It looked tiny though. I could see rows of whitewater breaking very close to the beach.
I drove the Lesser Great Highway yesterday and was very disturbed at the piles of window glass from Taraval to Irving. It's really getting out of hand. And it's not just on the grassy side of the street. I counted 5 piles of glass.
Went to Stern Grove yesterday to listen to the Hip Hop Orchestra. Most excellent. 75 musicians and about 10 vocalists. What a great way to spend a cold foggy summer day.

good work sc - let's nab the goof

No surf check for me this morning. Too busy cleaning up the emptys around my yarn. I did notice the leaves on my maple tree are no longer green, but changing colors.
I think that is a sign.
Fire up the NW swell engine, we need it.

Somewhat surfable whatchamacallems this a.m, but whether this was due to conditions or delusional hope is uncertain. Kloo an I had an enlightening discussion concerning the psychology of paddling like a maniac in order to haul oneself over one dumping little closeout after another. Is it surfing? Or just stupid?
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at August 22, 2005 11:11 AMWow, man... the fourth one closest to the right is a knock out. Man, that's what I call a proper 21 gun salute! It's like, Ready! (spray down their titties with wet cold water) AIM! (their nipples start getting erect) FIRE! (and then I come running over licking all of their titties to the Star Spangled Banner). Ohhhh say can you see! Bring your big dick to me!
About the car thefts: I had a dream this morning that my car was stolen. I don't know if that counts, but it fucking SUCKED! That has to be the worst feeling in the world, even though it didn't really happen. Does that qualify me to be in the lynch mob?
Posted by: MSG at August 22, 2005 11:13 AMnot un-fun at all. clean locally and peaky windswell, so the inner bar was fairly rideable.

Posted by: bagel at August 22, 2005 11:49 AMThe last free days of summer. Argh. School starting in a matter of days. The routine dawn patrol coming to an end. All too fast.
The last week of summer and we are blessed with some swell. The sandbars shifted over the summer months. The best ones are now a mile or so south of my trailhead. This is before we had cars, we'd hike the beach.
I was stoked as Mom had bought me a new backpack, it was camouflage, rad. Stuffed with a banana, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, wetsuit and towel. The plan was too hike along the beach until we found "the peak".
It was not a beautiful sunny day. There was a thick fog overhead. Off in the distance we could see the better sandbars and the long lefts peeling. As we pass the last public trail to the beach, closer to the spots we start to run. During the hour our hike took the tide had started to move. The swell was up a bit and it was sooooo very glassy.
We decided on our peak. It was a nice long left with racy section on the inside to the shorebreak. The fog had lowered and become super thick suddenly. I placed my backpack closer to the shore so we could see it to line-up with. The cliffs and thier signature brush had dissappered behind a veil of fog.
The waves were so good. Our crew surfed for hours until the tide and fog wind mushed and crumbled the waves. Stoked, tired and hungry. Everyone wanted a few bites of my sandwich.
Back on the beach. I approach my backpack. Fuck!!!! What's this???? Some dog shit on it?!!! FUCK! Now my freinds are laughing becuase on this foggy day when you could not see the bushes and cliffs from the waters edge a dog had thought my camo backpack was a bush.
The next day the waves where even better. A fucking dog shit on the backpack again. In my expereince camouflage works.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at August 22, 2005 11:50 AMI borrowed a 10' soft coffin bag, never tried a hard bag. The way the boards look, it almost seemed that the damage was intentional, angry handlers, mad that I brought so many boards.
I like #7
Posted by: Mexi at August 22, 2005 11:52 AMMSG, getting the car stolen isn't so bad if you BART to work, do your shopping on a bike and have a girlfriend with a Honda that sleeps until 10 AM on weekends.
Flieshaker's Sunday morning with the longboard. Waves were really bad, but the longboard made for easy paddling with my busted pec. I didn't see any white sharks, although I do belive I may have spotted the elusive jaguar shark. If I see him again, I will blow him up with dynamite. I've alerted a crack team of researchers that are on the case.

Posted by: recycler at August 22, 2005 12:20 PMbeen lurking for a while... thanks for the blog, e. couple of stories from this weekend, start with saturday: out at the hole between judah and lincoln around noon, getting fun, late drops on the blown but sometimes curvy sets rolling in. paddling into a wave, spot a fin out of the corner of my eye. couldn't see it clearly but the adrenaline had already hit the bloodstream so i just paddled in. i thought about it for a minute, it had to have been a porpoise, black with a swept fin and arcing out and back into the water... another guy comes down at this point and i relate the story to him, then we paddle back out. a sea lion pops up as i'm paddling out, then, as i get outside and sit up on my board, it pops up right next to me, snorting and looking me right in the eye. that spooks me a little, but then the he swims off... i catch a couple and then the other guy says to me that the sea lion's up on the beach and that he's going to check it out. i follow him in and we join the number of other people staring at the foot-wide gash on the sea lion's right side. someone calls marine mammal rescue and i run down to moraga to give the group down there the heads up. anyway, just run of the mill stuff, certainly not anything to get anyone spooked.
last night the sky opened up around half past six and i ran down to kirkham / judah to some seriously mackin' low-tide breachbreak. had a bunch of fun rides, some lucky butt-plants (as opposed to face plants), a couple cases of leash hog-tie (including one on a really nice drop.. grumble), and counted fifteen duckdives on one of my ways back out. the mid-section of
my pad (glued on by the former owner of my board, i'm guessing) started to come off, so i helped it along and stuffed it down the back of the suit.
anyway, between the steep walls, the out-of-nowhere sunset and sharing waves with my friend from down the street (the only other person out?), i was thoroughly stoked. did you miss it?

Posted by: MSG at August 22, 2005 01:18 PMDear Coastal Advocate
As you know, those of us who work to protect California’s threatened coast
face opposition that is well funded, with easy access to decision makers
and with resources we can’t even imagine. This month marked the latest
chapter in one of those “David and Goliath” struggles that so often
defines our work. After many years, hundreds of letters, dozens of
meetings and a legal challenge mounted by Sierra Club and several allied
groups, we won a tremendous victory for the coast and all the people of
California against the federal government.
At their August public hearing in Costa Mesa, the California Coastal
Commission unanimously voted to object to the Bush administration’s effort
to extend 36 offshore oil leases between Oxnard and San Luis Obispo. The
next day a federal judge ruled on the same issue, barring the extension of
the leases until an extensive environmental review can take place! These
leases are the last offshore spots not included in the federal drilling
moratorium, and with this ruling it is highly unlikely that there will be
any new drilling in these areas for several years!
Californians have been united against additional offshore oil drilling
since the devastating 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, and Sierra Club
coastal activists have been working for years to fight back constant
drilling threats to our coast. This is a huge victory for everyone who
wants clean water, safe beaches and protection for ocean and coastal
plants and animals.
I am especially proud of the California Coastal Commission who stood up
for all Californians, while the federal government refused to even show up
and answer questions at the public hearing. Coastal Commission Chair Meg
Caldwell was right on the money when she said that their failure to appear
was "…an affront to the coastal commission, the federal courts and the
people of California."
Thanks to all of you coastal activists who have stood with us over the
years. This victory is another reminder that united, we are succeeding in
protecting California’s threatened coastline for future generations.
Until next time
Mark Massara

Posted by: at August 22, 2005 03:52 PMSHELLAC - GAM tonight/tomorrow

Posted by: the bird is the most popular finger at August 22, 2005 04:04 PMChanging daylight savings time will allow us to about 100,000 barrels of oil a day (out of 22 million) mostly on lighting, which would actually be better served if people got flourescent bulbs instead.
It's actually more of a dp killer. Under the old rules, I used to quit dping in September, but then have the first week after the clock change I could surf from 6 to 7. Now when the clocks change in the 3rd week of November, sunrise will go from 8 AM to 7 AM instead of 7 AM to 6 AM like in previous years. The flipside of the coin is you slothful surfers will be able to surf at dawn and still get your beauty sleep.
Posted by: Andrew in Alameda at August 22, 2005 04:28 PMSharkbait,
It's not stupid, just a kind of exercise. In these kinds of conditions, however, I'll just sleep in and go to the gym in the afternoon.

Im the anon that posed the o.g. question, was thinking longboards are heavier, easier to paddle but harder to carry and turn. so maybe it evens out with a lighter shortboard (harder to paddle easier to turn adn carry). i dont know. its monday.
Posted by: at August 22, 2005 05:15 PMMade the cruise down to N. Baja this weekend (left on Thurs and returned last night). Of course I got skunked. I would say about a mile from it. There is a bed and breakfast right next to the place too. You should check out Barbara's Fish Trap and get the fish and chips. Posted by: at August 22, 2005 09:40 PMRegarding scarface, if we've got a license plate and make and model, how about someone with dmv access outing the thief? Probably has a rap sheet. Maybe if we do most of the work, SFPD will start doing theirs. Who has the dispatch number of the nearest station? 911 is a joke, as we all know. Another thought is take pictures of the perp and his ride, print up a bunch of posters with the particulars, and plaster them up and down the great highway. Maybe do both. And what's up with the residents? I know it's a bad neighborhood (amazing), but they can't all be down with this crap. A lot of them are older, but they've got eyes. Locals must be getting ripped off too. The end of niceness for criminals.
