tough winds
I tried to motivate but the wind raged from the SW at 6:40am. I walked down to where i could see the ocean and it was all white-capped. Geez.. maybe spots south were showing?? actually... looking at the wind charts, it looks like i should've made the pilgrammage to the next county down. shit. I'm sure it was glassy head-high windswell sweetness.
But instead grabbed the ax and worked through some theory. Worked through this weird scale and then built the corresponding triads and improvised within it. I've never built triads with a tonic - major third and then double-diminished?? i don't know what you'd call it. I was playing a seven tone scale in A. A, Bb, C, D, E, F#, G#, A. It's pretty funky with the three half-steps in a row. The major 7th (G#), the tonic (A), and the flat 2nd (Bb) make for a trippy sound. Then when you build the triads it's a minor triad for A, then Bb augmented, then C augmented, then D major, then the weird E triad (E, G#, Bb). The third and fifth of E in this scale are only a whole step apart. Funky shit man.. Sorry if the above is a bit off.. i kinda need a guitar or piano here to double check it.. anyhoo.. it was fun.
Been reading alot of interviews with musicians and also jamming a ton so the music has been on my mind. Also listening all day on Rhapsody while i work. So many musicians talk about listening as the primary skill. not playing. The ability to listen and react. the ability to support the other musicians, to compliment and affirm. Many musicians talk reverentially about reaching toward the collective sound of the group. They talk about contributing to the holistic sound rather than selfish personal expression. Sometimes that means not playing at all if you feel that the overall music would benefit at that moment from your NOT playing. John Cage famously plays a piece called 4:33, which is 4 minutes and 33 seconds of total silence. He just sits there at the piano bench and doesn't play.
If you like the folky music in Shelter here's an interview with a cute model/surfer/musician who's music appears in the movie
George Crumb's Makrokosmos
Vol. I, Movement 12 (Spiral Galaxy)
Keith Jarrett
Dizzy

E--There's a songwriter's retreat at the Henry Miller Library in November. Listening is a good way to learn the music. But we all learn differently. Most importantly is developing a style (and a sound). Like surfing--people can imitate what they see in the photos, the mags, the movies, but really those who develop their own form have the soul to perform. Saw Conga Masters at Great American last Sunday. So much sound to absorb: three conga players, one bongoist/percussionist, piano, drummer, sax, trumpet, and trombone. Crazy time trying to hear the individual rhthms of the conga players--to hear the layers. Francisco Aquabello was a great organic leader.
Posted by: amigoism at August 24, 2005 11:10 AMthat show sounds cool amigoism. I agree that individual style is everything.
For sure.
In the interest of advancing your own personal style, however, having a mastery of the language of you art (music, surfing, dance, origami, etc.) helps advance the richness and depth of your personal stylistic expression.

Posted by: blakestah at August 24, 2005 11:46 AMHey guys...speaking of music, if any of you like tunes along the same line as Jack Johnson, G. Love, or Sublime (people say we sound like a mix of all of them), and you've got some time tomorrow night, our band Bag of Toys...

is playing tomorrow night at The Red Devil Lounge on Polk and Clay St. in Nob Hill. We go on about 9:30, and play until around 11:30. Swing by if you get a chance. E, I'd love for you to see us, as we're always looking for bands to play with. It's too bad we couldn't play together those months back...

Posted by: at August 24, 2005 11:49 AME--yes, mastery is important. The more one masters, the purer the expression. The show on Sunday showcased mastery--there was some fine dancing as well on the part of a certain amiga that was particularly captiving, but demonstrating the link of music, song, and dance.
A la MSG--I read an interview with Billy Joel where he stated he simply got into music to get the chicks. Iggy Pop had a more lurid description of his favorite college towns. Chet Baker was a notorious womanizer. Hammer of the Gods outlines good times gone awry. Like Jodeci claim: the show, the afterparty, the hotel....

Low tide a ways south at a rarely-good part of a certain beach was very nice indeed. Consistent offshores, shoulder-to-head, long rides and paddling lulls. Walls that would stay up for you to play on. Such a different experience from the dribblers and dumpers we've been seeing. Last ride dropped me gently onto the dry sand.

Makes me wondering about spreading yourself too thin, or just being dedicated to a single art. It's something Finnegan talks about in "Playing Doc's Games"...he was someone that took off to Indo when there were no surf camps only hikers...now he's an editor at a well respected magazine. I suppose the choice in going to NY means surfing is being given a less prominent role in one's life. I wonder if your musical heavyweights had any consuming hobbies vying for their time that they gave up.

Posted by: The Beat. at August 24, 2005 01:36 PMj- got back on Sunday. Was great being back in CA. Surfed only two days. Basically got skunked and fooled with the promise of a south on all the reports. Even sadder is that I had to hit Lindy for both sessions. the horror.
have to say this - although it was great being back seeing old friends and getting wet, EG didn't have the old charm I once thought. the whole coastside had this vibe of a shanty town. there is litter strewn everywhere along the highway and even in the neighborhood. you have these $800K houses that look like run down beaters. 10 cars parked in every driveway and in front of their houses. no one taking care of their shit. mean faces on all the people. the coastside was suppossed to be this special "community" but that's all a bunch of shit. everyone's into their own thing and keeps to themselves. i guess i felt this way a little before we moved back but my trip confirmed my dying affection of the place I said I would never leave. guess it turns out the thing i miss most is just the waves and a few good friends. peace anyway and keep pimpin'. egp

Actually, it was sorta fun to know most the heads in the lineup. I think I knew 6-7 peeps out there.
Besides that, don't feel bad you missed the first head high waves we have seen in a long time. Well, as we all know, it is not the most high performance wave.
Solid time. And I did see boards collide but no one paddle in so maybe it was all whitewater and no dings.

Posted by: Hydrodynamica! at August 24, 2005 10:58 PMHey folks,
I need some help here. I'm looking for a waterproof digital camera that's rugged for surf, but portable and small enough so I can strap it around my arm and it won't get in the way of my surfing. Also, it would be cool if I could easily take pictures with it too and not have to worry about a big set taking me out.
Anyone know of such a device? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
Posted by: MSG at August 24, 2005 11:51 PMI shoot an Olympus Stylus Verve 5 GB on my bike rides. Very small, fits in my pocket. I can shoot descending mountains now at 30 mph. They make a waterproof case for it- but only good to 9 feet. They do make waterproof cases for almost all Olympus digital cameras that go much deeper- just not for the Verve. Google "Olympus USA" for info. The cases are under accessories. I bought mine off Amazon, and somebody has the waterproof cases on there at a good price.
Posted by: GA Lurker at August 25, 2005 06:38 AMwater cameras: I've used Minolta DImage cameras with water housings in the past. Probably a little too large for the arm, but good for a fanny pack. You can get a 5MPix Minolta X50 that does half-way decent video if you're really into it...
Posted by: J at August 25, 2005 08:01 AMyeah, i second the X50. the water housing makes it a bit bigger but it's still manageable.
sony makes some waterproof cameras that are pretty small, but they're around 2Mpix. they take good shots although the shutter isn't fast enough for sharp, clear action shots.
the technology is getting better and better so i'm sure within the next year some sick new watercam will hit the market.
Posted by: rza at August 25, 2005 09:51 AMHey there MSG,
Posted by: V70T5 at August 25, 2005 09:54 AMI work in the photo-biz and surf here in SF and like to take pics out there.
I've been looking at it and here are a few options:
I think as far as digi goes the best one out there is the Pentax optio WP- its a 5 megapixel waterproof (down to 6 feet) 4"x6" is nice small size. Your not going to be able to dive withit but surfing should be no problem (we'll see, i got one on order)
Other than that most of the other compact digi's have water houseing for them but are pricey (about 250) and bulky (when your out there shooting with these surfing is not that easy.)
If you do go with one of the bigger cameras or housings a good way to carry it is use one of the rashgard with an attached hood. You can stach the cam in the hood when not in use and it stays outta the way so you can surf too.
You should also consider film (no its not dead yet). I shoot with a waterproof canon elf right now that really has a ton of days on it with out a problem. A local guy here also make a waterproof film camera that straps on yer arm and really was made with surfing in mind (i think they're at wise right now).
good luck and happy shooting
Yo E and Niceness goers! What's up from Miami?!Went out surfing yesterday afternoon at South Beach. Hurricane Katrina produced some aight waves (well, as far as So.Fla. goes).
