sick sick sick im sick. just to place blame... i'm saying tuesday morning at lindy was the culprit. that water was NASTY.

dennis, as to your last comment yesterday... we as a society seem to prefer to live in denial, so as to a projection on civil society... a long time, unless the 50% that you mentioned start to acknowledge that shit is getting further and further out of hand.

everyone should listen to the CNN interview with the mayor of the New Orleans. Pretty Depressing.

i'm going to invest in Soul and Ripping. they are hot commodities... the newest tech stocks. oh wait.. im broke.

nice chunk of seal in the water today. yum...

Grabbed the board for the got-out...fark looks cruddy, drive a little, fark, cruddy here too...find a place with overhead waves breaking in 3-4 ft water, occasionally not a closeout...occasionally...surfed many closeouts and a few really nice ones mostly alone. Except for a seal and some pelicans and the angry ghost of BVB. Felt like the wind was gonna kill it any second now.

You don't have to die to go to heaven
Or hang around to be born again
Just tune into what this place has got to offer
Cause we may never be here again

Regarding epoxy debate yesterday. I had the same French 6-8 that someone mentioned. It was a fine board- I bought it new from a shop going out of business. (cheap!) The board had a lot of snap and rigidity- different from a traditional board but nice. I repaired it at home and on the road with Bondo. Easy and fast. I had it for about two years before I snapped it in a hollow closeout at a shallow local point/ beach break. No stringer- when it broke I lost the front...

Likely wouldn't buy another as the shortboard shapes/ bottoms I like to ride aren't available as epoxies. Not sure that the expense of a new one would be worth it either- Epoxy or not, I still broke it.

Attractive female humans! Thanks for the post(s), Kaiser.

I think Fats was rescued from his house Monday; they only realized this yesterday when a picture of him was recognized. Dunno whether he's been heard from since.

What if the production and the design of surfboards were separated, with inexpensive mass production (for the sake of argument assume it's enviromentally and worker friendly) but custom shape? Then shape designers could sell their services. Seems like a nice set-up for the surfer/consumer. But maybe not for the designers. Maybe it would be too easy to clone shapes and so too hard to make money for designers? Also maybe it would be harder to get started as a shape designer?

I have a headache that I'll blame on Lindy also. Given the surf forecasts, I guess I plan on having a headache tomorrow too.

I have a Surftech Yater 9'1", had it for 4 years now.
The only minus with it is during a largish paddle-out. With so much board and so little weight there's no momentum to punch through.
I've also noticed it's extremely sensitive to center fin placement, though that's possibly because of the shape I guess.
Lovely board, surfs anything, highly responsive (far more than any regular longboard I've had) and unbreakable (touch wood). I lent it to a friend a few years ago and it was reurned with a bunch of rail dings, nothing huge. I only just recently got it fixed, cost half what I thought it would and it hadn't sucked any water at all. It's like new!
I'd like to try a nice fat epoxy retro shortboard, I'm betting the floaty sensation would translate well to a MR-styled twinny.
Don't knock 'em till you try 'em.

Blakestah, so what you're saying is, we're not going to see the NOAA/NWS buoys as part of the convenient "Current Combined NOAA and CDIP Buoy Summary" (http://facs.scripps.edu/surf/buoylist.html) for a long time due to Katrina?

In other words we'll have less data and less accessable data for weeks, if not months, right at the beggining of the surf season. I wonder if we're all starting to see how what happened down south is going to affect us all...

Everybody was complaining about the crowds showing up based on internet predictions. Well, now the Internet is a less useful tool for getting longer range swell predictions. Now everyone with visual access to the beaches should have the upper hand for a while.

Posted by: Kaiser at September 2, 2005 02:53 PM

The local buoy info is here
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mtr/versprod.php?pil=OSO&sid=SFO

The row with the "26" as its first entry is our buoy, it has all the up to date info there, wind speed/direction, wave height and period, water temp, etc.

When the old interface will come up again is anyone's guess....not entirely clear they had it backed up at someplace off-site. And right now they probably have larger issues to worry about.

Posted by: blakestah at September 2, 2005 02:56 PM

Is epoxy more enviormental friendly too?

From Point Blanks site

Point Blanks is committed to causing the least amount of damage to the natural environment in manufacturing our surfboards. Though we assess every material and process to lessen the harm, we are not perfect. We never will be. It?s an ongoing process of working towards sustainability.

Foam: Extruded polystyrene foam has fewer VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) than polyurethane foam. It?s safer for shapers to use, and less toxic to the planet.

Fiberglass: The main ingredient in fiberglass is sand. The glass fibers are treated with various finishes so they absorb and bond well with the different resins. For instance, Volan? Cloth uses Chromium, an environmental and health hazard, as one of the finish elements, which is why we don?t use it.

Resin: Epoxy resin has 75% fewer VOCs contained in the resin itself and two-thirds fewer VOCs are released into the atmosphere than from polyester resin. VOCs are a source of air pollution and can be a significant health hazard.

Stringers: In our search for better stringer materials we have experimented with all kinds of woods from apple plywood to okoume and bamboo. We looked into metal (too stiff and potentially dangerous), exotic foams (too weak) and PVC (too toxic). We ended up choosing cedar and spruce because of their high compression strength and low density. Our supplier slices the wood into the thickness required which wastes less wood than saw-cut wood. Glue-up is done with water-based glue. Cleanup uses soap and water.

Waste: According to a recent article in Longboard Magazine (V9 #7) reviewing surfboard construction techniques, the standard urethane/polyester shop wastes over five times as much materials as an epoxy board shop.

We do all we can to reduce the impact of making our surfboards, but in the end the biggest step in achieving a greener board is gained by making the best quality product that gives satisfaction in every way and lasts as long as possible.

Shaka...eeerrr... I mean Satan!

Posted by: at September 2, 2005 03:05 PM

Chemically speaking epoxy is less toxic. But still toxic. From a process standpoint, only the most established and busiest fiberglass/composite manufacturing facilities have the process and systems in place to deal with manfacutring waste and by products.

Surfboards can never really be considered envriomentally freindly. The surf industry is heavily reliant on petrochemicals.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at September 2, 2005 03:10 PM

wrt environmental friendliness, stryene based foams are MUCH nicer than polyurethane foams, mostly it is the manufacturing process that has lower VOCs.

Epoxy poses very little health risks, and has almost no VOCs in the formulations used in surfboards. If you combine the two, and consider surfboard manufacturing of a wood laminated EPS/epoxy board with a standard polyester resin/polyurethane blank, you get over 20 times lower VOCs in the atmosphere with the epoxy board. The ratio of total VOCs is a little lower if you use PVC as a sandwich material (a la Surftech), but you could still argue the surftech is more environmentally friendly and have a leg to stand on.

If you combine a hollow wood board with epoxy lamination a la Danny Hess (who apparently takes orders for boards now but isn't cheap) you get a surfboard with almost no VOCs whatsoever (the ones in the epoxy example above come almost entirely from manufacturing the blank).

just saw the item below re: the response to katrina, thought it might be of interest. from what I know of them, ACORN is a solid grass-roots organization...

==============================

Hurricane Katrina exposed an uncaring face of a government that does not believe in its basic role. Americans are expressing our shock and disgust with an Administration that failed to adequately mobilize to help the largely poor and minority communities of the Gulf Coast. We strongly protest this Administration's shortchanging of Homeland Security and disaster preparedness needs while lavishing tax breaks on a select few.

We write to ask your help for ACORN, a group that that needs your help now so that they can provide critical help to those in need and continue to hold public officials accountable. The ACORN national headquarters in New Orleans has succumbed to the flood waters and many ACORN family members throughout New Orleans have been displaced.

If you are able, please contribute to the ACORN Hurricane Recovery Fund by clicking here:

http://www.ourfuture.org/support_ACORN.cfm

ACORN is not a relief organization -- they are a national community organization headquartered in New Orleans that fights to defend the social and economic rights of low and moderate income families -- those impacted most severely by the recent destruction. Your tax-deductible donation will help ACORN:

Establish a temporary headquarters in Baton Rouge and reopen their New Orleans office as soon as possible;
Service housing and credit needs of impacted communities;
Organize individuals to ensure that low-income neighborhoods and families have a voice that will challenge public officials to treat all people fairly and get relief and rebuilding aid to the people who need it most.

I ordered my board through Palm St. Surf Shop in SC, who talked directly to Malcolm. This was pre-Moonlight involvement in the order mgmt process. Moonlight can't make Malcolm work any faster, but they should prevent mixups like mine where he had my board glassed with no tint. He said the board was almost done. I got that info back in May and was expecting the board in early June, but the board still hasn't arrived. Oh well, it's a 6'8" and I haven't needed it yet.

As for the Pavel board, I was told originally that Rich had such a backlog that he wasn't taking new orders unless I paid a $200 "priority" fee. I said no thanks, but then Rich called my cell phone and said he could take my order without priority and I would probably see the board in the fall. I have a Mandala quad, so I'm not in a rush.

Thanks Blakestah,

The row with the "26", our buoy, has the latest hour/up to date entry, but no historical data or the last 24 hours, right? That's what most of us rely on for trend analysis during the winter, especially when you line up SE Papa, California, and the SF buoys for NW swell arrivals. What a shame, but then again, perhaps good because we'll all be guessing again with regards to new swells. And I suppose I could try to find a weather radio...

Posted by: surfseeker7 at September 2, 2005 03:51 PM

Wow! That NOW transcript was dead on. I don't think they should try to rebuild New Orleans the way it was. Just turn the flooded areas into wetlands and keep the central core, or more radically, clear the entire city and relocate everybody up to Baton Rouge.
