desert wind

I'm sure it's intergalactic this morning.
I sorrowfully chose to continue drooling into the pillow rather than suit up and jog down for a dip in ye ol' ocean.
The surface looked good.
I saw some exploding white-water while on my bike at 8:30.
I'm sure it's all-time best ever peaky inner bar barrels with nobody around.
Definitely 75 degree water with plate-glass A-frame perfection.
No doubt chunky, powerful groundswell speed grinders cruising in one after another after another.
Yup..

raaad e sounds sweet 'cept the driving part and the wind part but you charged! good one on you. and to think im being a bitch about driving to LA for the weekend.

ill give the waves a 5.5 this weekend.

Posted by: bagel at October 10, 2005 11:07 AM

There were some >5.5 waves to be found if you could make the 90 minute drive down to SC over the weekend.

Posted by: steve at October 10, 2005 11:13 AM

drove forever on saturday but got barred by too much NW, came back and got some really fun waves in SC. sunday was the most fun i'd had at OB in a long time, too bad i tweaked my back and couldn't surf again today.

Posted by: bbr at October 10, 2005 11:27 AM

This mornin was fun. There were some nice peaks, just alot of paddling to get in the right spot where I was... I need to sleep.

Posted by: mofo at October 10, 2005 11:39 AM

Hey Dennis, did you surf at the south or north end of O.B. this Sunday? I was out at the south end till 3 p.m. My face is BURNT. I had a 3/2 on as well, and it was cold, but not as cold as last week Weds. when I bodysurfed till twilight and entered first stage hypothermia out there. I will buy a 4/3 next time. I need booties and gloves too. By the way, you're calling that overhead in the morning? I saw some definite 8 foot plus sets coming through out there. Definitely fun at O.B. on Sunday.

You brave fellahs in the desert--I salute you! Good 'Mericans!

Posted by: George W. at October 10, 2005 11:44 AM

Looked good out there this a.m., but had an early meeting.

Yesterday, I was in a sketchy peak area. Had to bail on one wave---I hit the water so hard, my head is still throbbing. I've been punched upside the head before, but never had anything like the blow I took yesterday. Damn, OB can pack a wallop. Need to learn the art of graceful bailing.

Posted by: amigoism at October 10, 2005 11:51 AM

MSG, being that I'm only 5'8, 8' is overhead to me! Just kidding. Yes, it was more than overhead but I surfed at a spot that was a bit smaller and cleaner than your location.

Posted by: Dennis at October 10, 2005 11:54 AM

Nice trip E. I'll bet your glad you made the decision to go.

Posted by: Dennis at October 10, 2005 11:57 AM

Ha that what you get for bailing! No just kidding actually I got thumped yesterday too trying to duck dive a thick set- got pounded back to the beach- Some weird ceremony going on floating oranges and stuff- Anyone catch that? The desert rocks.

Posted by: e at October 10, 2005 12:14 PM

More than I like the idea of hanging out on the beach at night and sitting around a campfire, I hate the trash people are leaving behind. I picked up so much shit on the beach yesterday and it didn't make a dent in the crap that was still there from the night before. Piles of beer bottles that were thrown in a campfire. Burnt wood with nails sticking out. I think it sucks also that surfers don't do more to pick up the crap after surfing. It doesn't take much if most of us picked up a little bit on the way to the car. At least some drunk homeless guy said, "Thanks man" when I walked past him with my hand full of trash.

Posted by: Dennis at October 10, 2005 12:31 PM

for the ammount of taxes we pay in this city they should get a frinkin' bull dozen and drag the beach every monday. or just ban fires all together.

Dear Coastal Activist

As you may know, I have just returned from Tahiti. I don't normally take
vacations, but this year when the opportunity arose for me to travel, I
just couldn’t say no. I will soon publish some of my favorite photos from
my trip on our website www.sierraclub.org/ca/coasts so I can share with
you some of the beautiful coasts I was lucky enough to visit.

One of the lessons that I took away from this trip was that no matter how
serious our coastal protection problems in California, we have the power
to do more to protect our coast than do people who live in most other
places. The reason is California’s Coastal Act, and the California
Coastal Commission it created to protect the coast. Even though I am
sometimes frustrated by the decisions of the Coastal Commissioners, they
are unique in their ability to review and regulate development proposals
that would harm the coast.

Next week at their monthly meeting the Commission will be confronting an
issue that is emblematic of a problem you are familiar with – the need for
guaranteed funding so that the Commission will have the tools and staff it
needs to do a good job.

An irresponsible property owner, has a large oceanfront home, adjacent to
the Scripps Canyon Natural Preserve in La Jolla (San Diego County), and
has began construction on a steep slope containing rare and native coastal
sage scrub habitat. Watching bulldozers scrap away on the steep hillside
alarmed his neighbors and Great Coastal Places members. They alerted the
Coastal Commission staff who quickly determined that the project was
illegal, and issued a stop work letter. The owner ignored the stop work
letter and kept bulldozing until the Coastal Commission itself stepped in
and the Executive Director issued a Cease and Desist Order on August 12,
2005.

The Commission meets next week to discuss whether or not to approve this
near completed project. And, while it is clear that this project must be
denied - developers should not be given permission for their projects
simply because the damage is already done – this would set a dangerous
precedent. But the real issue is that the Commission needs to be fully
funded, so that they have enough staff to investigate and enforce coastal
development regulations BEFORE the bulldozers destroyed a hillside!

Write a letter to Coastal Commission Chair Meg Caldwell today (or send the
letter below with your name and address included) and ask her to deny this
project and avoid a dangerous precedent. If you send your letter back to
me at savethecoast@sierraclub.org I will print out your letters and
personally deliver them at the Coastal Commission meeting on October 12th.

---

Dear Coastal Commission Chair Meg Caldwell,

A protected California coast is a legacy that we can pass along to future
generations. It is also well documented as fuel for our state’s great
economic engine, bringing in billions of dollars every year through
coastal tourism. It is essential therefore, that California’s coastal
protection laws be enforced to ensure protection of our threatened
beaches, bluffs and coastal views. We can not allow illegal development
to be permitted simply because the work was completed before the
development was noticed.

I am writing to urge you to deny Fargo: Appeal No. A-6-05-71. In this
case, the property owner is near completion on the grading of a steep and
delicate coastal bluff to build a personal water-slide, pool and spa. The
City of San Diego, in exempting this development, was clearly in violation
of the Local Coastal Plan, as the development damages the delicate bluffs
and important habitat. We must be careful to not look the other way
simply because the damage has already been done.

The precedent that could be set by approving this development is quite
staggering. If the property owner is given the green light in this case,
it sets in place a situation where developers could simply ignore our
coastal protection laws, secure in the knowledge that if they are caught
in the act, there will be no penalty and no ability for the coast to be
protected.

Please deny Fargo: Appeal No. A-6-05-71 and protect the Commission’s
ability to adequately protect our coast in years to come.

Sincerely

Definitely not small out there. Be cautious.

R.I.P. Flame, I used to bug out to many of his photos as a grom.

OB was interesting yesterday, surfed some large ones, with the oomph, the boom-bip and the slap-boof-gonk if you took the wrong ones. Washy and unfriendly in the impact zone. Commitment and consequences. Stairste(e)p takeoffs, not-too-great conditions, some glory, some poundings, finally got that feeling: "The wave is in control here today." A lick of winter in the indian summer. If it were +1 more foot of swell, I would have needed the 7'0", b/c my shortboard rails were barely clinging to the wall on some of those sets.

Nice story on the kid swimmer but....

All the news sites and TV news are saying the kid paddled through "choppy, shark-infested waters" -- just goes to show, yet again, what utter horseshit "news" and news media can typically be like. There was NO wind, the Bay was as perfectly smooth as it is ever gets. There was no chop. And nobody has ever been attacked by a shark there. Can't anybody report anything without embellishing for entertainment value anymore? The kid swam a straight shot through calm water, in a fullsuit, on a warm sunny day.

Posted by: Secret Doom Dada at October 10, 2005 02:47 PM

plus he's very nearly ten, and was a late birth.

looked pretty fun at the beach this morning but i couldn't pull the trigger--too tired/under the weather. might try the afternoon. it seemed pretty similar to yesterday mid-day, but maybe a little less peaky, so surfers were often getting either closeouts or pretty brief shoulders.

Posted by: kloo at October 10, 2005 02:54 PM

Blarg...missed Sunday, sounds like it was good.

I was swam for 2 hours on Saturday morning as I mostly took beatings and flailed around in rip currents...seemed like nearly everything was steep close-outs. I was body surfing when a kite surfer showed up...dude had sack, jumping the waves on the outside. Current was running 3+ kts, so he was not going to recover a downed kite. Pretty cool to watch from the water angle.

Andrew, if you went bodysurfing out there Sat., I give you props.
