Posted by: Cousin It at October 13, 2005 10:39 AMJust me and a kneelo at dawn at the north side of the south end (huh?). Glass surface, no wind, warbly sets, juice for sure. That 5 wave set right on the head was a little humbling. The new board is a beast. Welcome to fall!
Posted by: kdalle at October 13, 2005 10:39 AMWhat types of boards are people ridin' these days now that we have some size?
Posted by: flades at October 13, 2005 10:41 AMMusic. I was listening to NPR the other day and they were talking about the phenomenon of music. Music is a series of various sound wavelengths. Why do we enjoy music? Why is it that we enjoy some combination of sound wavelengths and not others? Testing on infants show they react to certain combinations of sound wavelengths in a predictable manor, similar to adults. Hmmmmmmmmmm. (That was in b flat)
Posted by: Dennis at October 13, 2005 10:42 AMLots of paddling this morning. Disorganized set-up. Clean waves. Bars could use some shaping. Flades...I stick with my 6'8" until its a DOH+ day - then to my 7'8" OB mini-gun.
Hey Mexi...does your school's art dept. have a need for magazines? My office has a glut of them and instead of sending to the recycle bin...I'd like to give them to an art dept if they'd use them. I remember art projects as a grom that involved hacking through mags.
Let me know. Full gamut of mags from Newsweek to Forbes to Woman's Day to SI to Vibe to Game Informer...lots of 'em.
Posted by: Q at October 13, 2005 10:50 AMTook my new board out last night on it's maiden voyage. It's a 6'1 CI Mongrel. This is my shortest board ever and felt pretty comfortable right from the first wave, though the waves were not that great. Duck-diving has never been so easy. Paddling takes extra effort but it's my small wave board anyway. I've been riding a 6'8 Rusty semi in head-high plus. Love that board. Next sie up is a 7'6 for 1.5 to DOH. Beyond that, I'll prolly stay on dry land except for exceptionally clean days with long lulls.

Posted by: whoa at October 13, 2005 12:23 PMCuppla good waves, buncha lousy ones for me. Definitely a wave selection issue, as there were plenty of good ones out there, judging from the buckets being thrown.
Been on a 6'6" except for two of the biggest days so far, but then I haven't been hitting the bigger parts of the beach the last few sizeable days.
Posted by: kloo at October 13, 2005 12:26 PMUh Oh!!!! Kloo just said buckets. You didn't just say that word did you???
Posted by: Jack at October 13, 2005 12:28 PMWasn't me throwing them. Some kinda...brigade. An' they were regulating! And all the bikini babes left with them! Meanwhile a lone figure atop the Cliff House gazed south, seeing farther than can be explained physically, and nodded once, "tomorrow".
Posted by: kloo at October 13, 2005 12:33 PMI think blakestah really meant it ends tomorrow..Fall that is. Tomorrow is the beginning of winter.

Posted by: Andrew in Alameda at October 13, 2005 12:55 PMTomorrow is supposed to be 14ft 13 seconds??? WHOA...
Posted by: MSG at October 13, 2005 01:14 PMI was thinking about getting a rashgaurd with a hood on it. Do they flush water down the suit? Comments?
Posted by: Dennis at October 13, 2005 01:45 PMDennis...wear it over the suit and you won't get any water in there.
Posted by: at October 13, 2005 02:08 PMDennis. No. But make sure to get one with a visor or you'll have water dripping down your face all the time.
Mine has a propeller on top.
I had lunch with the engineers today. Here's a funny software engineer joke:
This software engineer is walking down the street. Out from a bush jumps this frog. Suddnely it says to the engineer. "I'm really a Princess, kiss me unlock the evil spell and I'll make you rich."
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at October 13, 2005 02:11 PMThe engineer picks up the frog, stuffs it into his pocket.
The frog pokes it's head out. "Hey I'm a beautiful princess and I'll be your sex toy if you just kiss me and un-lock the spell."
The engineer stuffs the frog back down into his pocket.
Flustered the frog pokes it's head out and says. "Hey I'm offering to make you rich and give you my sex whenever you wish....Why won't you kiss me to break the spell?"
The engineer looks at the frog.....
"I work in Silicon Valley and have plenty of stock options and money. Due to work I have little time for sex. But WOW a talking frog now thats cool."
I cant stop listening to this album:

Drums and Tuba - Vinyl Killer
they're playing at the Red Devil Lounge on Nov 11!! STOKED!!!!!
Posted by: e at October 13, 2005 02:19 PMAnon, if I wear it backwards will it keep my face warm?
Posted by: Dennis at October 13, 2005 02:39 PMDennis - I got the hotline hooded rashgauard. Nice thick hood with a little collar that goes over the top of the wetsuit. I find the visor to be of marginal use, as I don't care a whole lot about drips when I'm in the ocean and I'd prefer the wider field of vision. I find the collar is good for one wave, and I gotta be flipping it back down constantly (and I'm flipping my visor back up constantly). When the collar is down, it's fairly effective for bodysufing and when up, eh, it's not so bad.
But on the whole, I enjoy it greatly and recommend it. Excel seems to have a similar rashguard. I think I paid $45 for mine at Sonlight. They are good peeps in there.
Only song I learned to play on the tuba was "Mac the Knife" but lemme tell ya, that shit sounds awesome on a tuba. I just read a review of the band..they sound good...but they snuck in a guitar. Makes me nostalgic for bands like Morphine that played without a guitar.
Posted by: Andrew in Alameda at October 13, 2005 02:51 PMThere was a girl in my Jr High that played tuba in the school band. She was really skinny and tall. Unfortunately during concerts, she'd get nervous and pass out while blowing into the tuba. It happened twice.

Trying to plan a month-long sabbatical in Jalisco and/or Oaxaca next year (May, June, or July 2006). Anyone have an opinion on which month(s) would be good for surf? Not looking for huge surf--just fun headhigh/OH waves); want a relaxing respite from work. Planning on conducting some research on localTequilas and mescals. I've done some research, but opinions much appreciated.
Likewise, anyone know of any decent car rental places. Would like to rent a pickup truck on the cheap.

Dennis- Check out the handsome young body surfer modeling the hoodie. You can see the collar is flipped up, but it still works. Though you cannot expect the hoodie alone would give you his rockstar good looks. I can't help but admire the cut of jib.

Posted by: betho at October 13, 2005 08:37 PMmy family and i are heading down the coast next week in our camper van for a wedding. we are going to try to make it to SLO wednesday night so we can wake up to some waves. i've been to the calif parks.gov website and it's past the season where you can make reservations - now it's just 1st come 1st serve. we'll probably stay at sano the next night.
the camp site at sandollar is pretty good i think, and there are a couple of spots right there as well
Posted by: ty at October 13, 2005 08:46 PMWeather doesn't get any better than today/tonight around here. This is just awesome: the insects are chirping in the forest below, warm breeze is blowing thru my room, it smells like ocean or desert wind, and it's just surf shorts and some water. Too bad I gave up beer, otherwise I would be drinking a cold one right now.
