Posted by: bagel at November 8, 2005 10:10 AMSorry Bstah - I've been way too busy to get in the water this past week - with the exception of 30 minutes of utility paddling on Sat and Sun. Hardly the surf size for a 6'1 though.
I saw the surf morph this am from being ok at 6:30 to beautiful by 7:30. Fark, missed it again.

Posted by: happy fun at November 8, 2005 10:57 AMman, not living near to beach leads to alot of missed surf! Maybe the gods will allow for some late afternoon glass!! Hope you all had a fun, those lucky enough to be on it this am!

bad waves. Definitely nothing exciting. That is the final, total truth of the matter. it was shitty! especially since it's the first morning i haven't checked in about 3 weeks!

Posted by: amigoism at November 8, 2005 11:07 AMHow's the pollution level out at the beach today? I hate that detergent smell in the water after a consistent rain.
Posted by: amigoism at November 8, 2005 11:07 AMThanks, e, for the honest assessment. I was thinking about going out there this afternoon, but I totally forgot about the rains lately. I've got some healing wounds on my feet from a mishap in SC during the last big north swell we had two weeks ago. I don't want to get them infected.
Posted by: staph is bad. at November 8, 2005 11:19 AMWater was dark this am. Clouds always make the water more brownish, where as clear skies makes it greener or bluer. Don't know about the water quality but aesthetic quality was high on the scale.
I had first post today. But not first outside. After dogwalk, check-in with wifey and daughter, a few duckdives, I made it outside and the only other heads I saw were Judith and Tai Chi guy way down the beach (not doing Tai Chi this morning for obvious reasons).
Judith headed north to get away from "some thing Dead" on the inside of where we were. An hour later, she drifted back. For a while, TCG, one dude on a blue board, and I were the only three board surfers in site, and we were all within 20 yards of each other. After trading a few peaks, they were gone, and a couple more heads drift in from the north.
Current was running South, but I think it was due to swell angle more than tidal flow.
Very steep drops today. It almost had to be breaking on you to let you in though.
Randomness of swell factored in as well. A day where you see a lot of mindblowing empty waves, and if you are lucky you find yourself in some of them.

November 3, 2005
Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly dumped by Gisele Bundchen for flirting with Sienna Miller, sources have claimed.
The heartthrob actor was caught getting cosy with the stunning actress - who has had an on-off relationship with boyfriend Jude Law since he admitted cheating on her with his children's nanny - in a Los Angeles nightclub several weeks ago.
Supermodel Gisele was said to have been so furious when she found out that she called off her tempestuous romance with Leo once and for all.
A friend is quoted by Britain's The Sun newspaper as saying: "She was tired of Leo's flirting. The straw that broke the camel's back was none other than Sienna
."
Gisele is now rumoured to be dating Pamela Anderson's ex, Kelly Slater, while Leonardo has been spotted out with his former lover Paris Hilton, who is currently dating Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos.
Onlookers claim the pair were "deep in conversation" during a night out at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
A witness is quoted by Britain's Daily Star newspaper as saying: "Leo looked like he was in his element chatting away to Paris. It was almost as though Paris was trying to give him advice on his love life." - Bang Showbiz

A bull elk which attacked an eight-year-old boy after becoming intoxicated by eating rotten apples, was shot dead by Swedish police.
The attack happened as the boy played in the garden of his home in Karlskoga, central Sweden, the newspaper Aftonbladet said yesterday.
He was not seriously hurt. Normally shy, elk can become aggressive when drunk on rotten apples, a favourite winter food.

Posted by: MxRxHx at November 8, 2005 01:15 PMNY is actually pretty rural once you get away from Manhattan.
Dennis, I must have been the surfer to the South. No barrels for me, but looking North it might have looked like I was in one. Like I said, you needed the lip feathering and starting to throw over you in order to get into the waves I was surfing. No shoulderhopping today. Just some freaking steep drops on big outside sets for me.
Waves where you are in free fall and you have to consciously think about using your feet to guide the board. Basically with your toe-tips. By that, I mean you are not holding yourself up by your legs, they are just like an arm as far as how you are using them.
A fun instant of clarity as you begin your ride.

How has Arnold made things worse after Grey Davis?
Have we forgotten who got us into this mess? (hint = the democrats)
some of you guys are so anti-republican, by default, that you are in denial about how F'd up the democrats are. the democratic legislature of this state is a joke, but Arnold/Republicans are an easy scapegoat I guess.
i would rather have seen Taj or Fanning win it, to be honest, mates.
Posted by: slater at November 8, 2005 01:33 PMHey! Anybody ever met a public school teacher who was stoked on his/her job, and the time off, and the benefits? there are very few.
Very few teachers who dont have a ton of complaints about their job/pay/governor/school board.
How many of you teachers sit around the break room and whine about how bad off you've got it?
or maybe, you complain after you get out of work at 3:30pm?
or maybe you complain about your job during your 3+ months off a year?
whoops, i almost forgot the 2 weeks at xmas and all the government holidays, and half-days.
I used to substitute teach in SoCal, I couldnt stand these bitter old teachers who just complained about everything, except the fact that they were shitty teachers. California schools are full of these idiots.
I'm all for longer tenure tracks for these "teachers" and stricter requirements for keeping their jobs. The teachers teach better, and more students will learn.
Quit complaining, do your job, and enjoy your time off. or quit and go get some job, somewhere, where you wont be a bitter critter. life is too short. phuck!
ps- on a different subject, Jennifer Aniston is on Larry King tonight. I dont care how many packs a day she smokes, she is so friggin HOT!!
Posted by: IP addresss = 192.168.0.1 at November 8, 2005 01:43 PMUmmmm. I would say the State financial crisis came greatly though ot wholely as a result of the energy crisis which was a republican sanctioned theft of California assets. Remember Ken Lay? You know, G. Bush's bum buddy from Enron. He's not even being tried for his part in the scandal. I thought there might be a chance that Arnie could negotiate with Bush to get some of it back. But no.

I'm calling KOOK on the last two comments.
Easy to vote for this election, everthing Awnold is for, I am agains. No on everything but 79 and 80.
Just because I think the Republican Governor is fucked doesn't mean I love Democrats.
Dennis, wrong.
This state's financial crisis started long before those hot summers. If anyone blames this solely on republicans then they are in denial. We had a Democratic Governor and Legislature at the time. Our financial crisis had very little to do with Ken Lay, but it sure does sound cool to say that, doesnt it?
Seems to be the default answer for most people, to just blame the Republicans, and then they feel better and can sleep at night. Problem solved.
It is like saying Al Gore is an "environmentalist", when he flies a government jumbo jet to kyoto to sign a treaty that EXCLUDED China. What a crock of shite. I believe they burned something like 200,000 gallons of fuel on that trip alone.
Yes folks, the Kyoto treaty gave China exemption. If anyone here has ever been to china and seen the air quality there, they will know it is 1000x worse than LA. so they should just be excluded, makes a ton of sense. ps- it's the Republicans' fault!!!
Posted by: at November 8, 2005 01:53 PMI hear your braying, ass. But no cogent points as yet.
Again you accuse the crowd of blaming republicans, but only so you can defend them.
Arnold is just a pretty pawn held by a corporate hand. Just as GW, and Ronnie before them.
Grey Davis was a terrible govenor. Even so, recalling him was the fucking stupidest thing this State has ever done.
If Arnold was any good, he would know how to work with the legislature, rather than wasting money on special elections. At least Ronnie's people got that right.
Posted by: friend #1 at November 8, 2005 01:59 PMhere is a quick and easy way to prove you know how to solve the state's budget crisis:
http://www.next-ten.org/#
give it a go and you'll see it's a complicated mess with no apparent silver bullet (like blaming the energy crisis, or a Demovratic legislature or dem governor or repbu governor or the Brigade)
Posted by: the janitor at November 8, 2005 02:01 PMFriendster #1,

It is hard to hear that Democrats have to take blame for their majority part in the California mess. Even though it is true.
Posted by: slater at November 8, 2005 02:02 PMI see how you forgot to mention Davis in your list of corporate pawns. Ignorance is bliss.
Scapegoats rule!
do you find it odd that in a democratic-majority state, a republican was able to overthrow an incumbent democrat in a recall election? that must really eat you scapegoaters up. just deny it, it didnt happen.
Posted by: slater at November 8, 2005 02:09 PMI take it back. You are just a dick with a chip on his shoulder.
And I am not a Democrat, I'm just calling it like it is.
Posted by: friend #1 at November 8, 2005 02:11 PMI like it how whenever people start talking politics, everyone becomes an "expert". Fuck, just leave it alone already. Posted by: Lindsey Lohan at November 8, 2005 02:24 PMI love Taj!
Posted by: Lindsey at November 8, 2005 02:24 PMI'm as some of you know, and I love my job and the kids I teach. I agree with the comment of the old teachers whinning, I hate that shit. But longer tenure tracks are not the answer for that. The reality is it takes years for teachers to develope their craft. So firing a teacher in the first couple of years is pointless. If teachers are complete idiots they are usually gone in a year. In the last year my class size went from about 25 to about 35, a direct hit from the budget cuts.
Arnold was a direct player in the whole Enron deal. He is all about the corporation not the people...
The wannabe governor has yet to deny that on May 17, 2001, at the Peninsula Hotel in Los Angeles, he had consensual political intercourse with Enron chieftain Kenneth Lay. Also frolicking with Arnold and Ken was convicted stock swindler Mike Milken.
Now, 34 pages of internal Enron memoranda have just come through this reporter's fax machine that tell all about the tryst between Maria's husband and the corporate con men. It turns out that Schwarzenegger knowingly joined the hush-hush encounter as part of a campaign to sabotage a Davis-Bustamante plan to make Enron and other power pirates then ravaging California pay back the $9 billion in illicit profits they carried off.
Here's the story Arnold doesn't want you to hear. The biggest single threat to Ken Lay and the electricity lords is a private lawsuit filed last year under California's unique Civil Code provision 17200, the "Unfair Business Practices Act." This litigation, heading to trial now in Los Angeles, would make the power companies return the $9 billion they filched from California electricity and gas customers.
It takes real cojones to bring such a suit. Who's the plaintiff taking on the bad guys? Cruz Bustamante, Lieutenant Governor and reluctant leading candidate against Schwarzenegger.

Posted by: Monkey Milk at November 8, 2005 02:53 PMhey mexi, at the risk of prolonging this political screed, have you ever thought about why the structural conditions for the energy crisis existed in the first place? Sure, those bad guys with black hats took advantage of the situation in a probably criminal manner, but why was California caught with its pants down to begin with?

Posted by: intelligent designer at November 8, 2005 03:20 PMPerhps this is result of being born in Berkeley and raised in SC. but I've always thought that being republican and a surfer is like trying to mix oil and water.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at November 8, 2005 03:22 PMoh no, here we go again with the stereotypes. You might as well say surfers are environmentalist; and then you go to SC and see that a lot of them drive the biggest honking SUV's and pick up's to keep up their image. If anything, surfers are some of the biggest fuckin' hypocrites.
Posted by: BIG KOOK at November 8, 2005 03:27 PMbeautiful pics, walker. i'm frothing.

"you must be a chick" that's the kind of statement i expect from rightwing assholes. thanks for showing us your republican inspired hate and prejudice.
so, i was thinking since a bunch of us on this blog have little grom/grommettes and we'll be pushing them into their first waves in this cold, cold water, we should start some sort of wetsuit coop. they'll grow out of them so fast. maybe alex at aqua can help us orchestrate it and we can all just throw down a certain amount and pass the wetsuits down the line to the next little barrel seeker.
Posted by: steamwand at November 8, 2005 03:28 PMSlats, I resulted to namecalling hoping you would just go away. I don't want to engage you in discussion because you have nothing to say in response.
Example:
" Scapegoats rule!
"do you find it odd that in a democratic-majority state, a republican was able to overthrow an incumbent democrat in a recall election? that must really eat you scapegoaters up. just deny it, it didnt happen."
Now who is the scapegoat in the recall election?
Maybe the guy getting recalled?
And Davis wasn't so much a pawn of one hand as a pawn of too many. The state of politics in the day and age is such that only those beholden to donors has any chance at getting elected.
The republican model is to cast an "outsider" for candidacy who is controlled by the insiders in the background. Sometimes they get greedy and run for VP.
Sorry to everyone else for this drivel.
I'll go die now.

Posted by: jes at November 8, 2005 03:50 PMIt is all well and good to blame the Democrats...
But Pete Wilson instituted the plan for energy de-regulation BEFORE he left office. It was a horrible failure that cost the state $9 billion, and a 60% increase in energy bills!!!
Prop 13 was a big hit for voters, but it needs to be compensated for with other sources of revenue. With each year since its passing its effect has grown to decrease state revenues. Add to that a $9 billion-dollar hit from energy de-regulation, and the budget all of a sudden looks like a real problem.
The solution, of course, is to get rid of Schwartzenegger, vote Meathead into office, re-re-invent property taxes, and spend money like a normal state.

Posted by: slater at November 8, 2005 04:02 PMI am in favor of the sum total of all taxes (sales, property, income) being proportional to income. In a semi-utopian society, figure out a FAIR way to assess all income, flat tax income only (with a floor below which no taxes are collected), and use that as the sole source of state income.
Of course, the rich would pay more than twice as much as they do now if that were instituted. I see no way anything remotely close to this will be instituted. Every tax reform seems to shift the burden further and further downward, and that is plain wrong.

Posted by: Walker at November 8, 2005 04:10 PMThe wind forecasts were dead off. Sh*t happens. Swell not even that great wrt period/direction/cleanliness. But offshore winds does wonders for swell.
Posted by: blakestah at November 8, 2005 04:11 PMI'm a 4th generation California democrat who would cross party lines in a heartbeat to vote for a flat tax canidate. Even if it was Steve Forbes.

I think we're all Kooks on this board.
Posted by: friend #1 at November 8, 2005 04:16 PMno matter what you think of arnold and the republicans, vote no on 73! not only would this prop take away the right of a teenage girl to have a safe, legal abortion without telling her parents, but it would define a abortion as the death of an unborn child. if it passes, it will be very easy to make the next step to outlawing abortion altogether. NO ON 73!!!!

hey "slater," what're you some stooge intern for Karl Rove, or what? Your hater stabs, insults and half-baked logic promotes nothing, sure all politicians are rich and priveleged, but if you are somehow defending the backward corpo-fucks that are ruining this country you are essentially a nihilist or fundamentalist christian who probably can't stop dreaming of spanking off to a mushroom cloud. The good news is this; thanks to the wonders modern pharmaceuticals your misery can probably be treated.
Posted by: go surfing at November 8, 2005 04:41 PManyone heard about this supposedly revolutionary solar electric generator?

Posted by: bagel at November 8, 2005 04:59 PMBlakestah - so glad to see you talk about prop 13 and its effect on the state's well being. If it were repealed, I believe they estimate a $1 trillion shot in the arm - and because of how property taxes are allocated in this state, a good portion of that straight into public education.
Yes, many people who've owned their houses for a long time, would be up shit creek, but ultimately, I think it would cause a good churn in the city - there are so many blue-hairs sitting in multi-million dollar mansions in Pac Hts, paying only hundreds of dollars a year in property taxes, when they should be paying taxes based on the current vaule of the land.
Prop 13 sucks...I am a homeowner and I don't have a problem paying my taxes. I am also a father who would like to send my kids to well-funded public schools. Pipe-dream, I know, but I'm all for the repeal of Prop 13.
Both CT and NJ, who have two of the best public education systems in the country, collect property taxes based on current value of real-estate. Prop 13 has hurt California.
Posted by: Q at November 8, 2005 04:59 PMI agree with you Q 100% and I'm a SF home owner too.
It's all good to be rich ala Feinstien and Boxer, but it not OK to fuck the world. Rich people who do the right thing are OK in my book. Hell, I aspire to be rich one day.
Posted by: Mexi at November 8, 2005 05:21 PMNo Kelly, it's November 8th!

Posted by: Brian at November 8, 2005 06:02 PMI guess it's too late to surf. Not too late to jag off though... ahhhhh... next best thing to surfing, or getting laid -- by different women, that is.
Posted by: at November 8, 2005 06:09 PMPolitics and surfing? What a bad combination. I do grow tired of those who assume that all surfers are Democrats. I know some (gasp!) Republicans who surf. Bush is a dummy, but I'm not sure I'd vote for Barbara Boxer for President. Ultimately, surfers are into freedom, and that transends party lines. It also means that we don't drop into some category. Can one agree with some positions of both parties?
Posted by: Bruce at November 8, 2005 06:11 PMPlease, no lemmings.
Posted by: Bruce at November 8, 2005 06:12 PMI lost my dog in the east mendocino back country on Sunday and I got him back today. I hired a guy with a helicopter to fly me around up there. Can't believe I found him. So stoked. I didn't vote today though. Or surf.
Posted by: eric at November 8, 2005 06:16 PMI'm not from here, I'm from the south Pacific.
But I've lived here for 4.5 years, and I've seen 19 states. I've been to DC 4 times, NY 3, Baja, Canada 4 times, Japan, HW and I live in NorCal. I travel, read and I'm a regular person.
And I gotta say.. the 'new' republicans are unpatriotic.
They drape themselves in the flag, but hate regular Americans. They're ok with old and poor and sick people Americans dying because they can't afford healthcare or heating oil. They're ok with kids losing their parents in support of a war where we the taxpayers are subsidising Iraqi regular folk to be able to buy gas at 2 cents (!) a litre.
It seems to be all about winning for them, instead of all about decency and the American way.
I don't understand them at all, but I'm starting to think they're kind of simple.
Posted by: at November 8, 2005 06:27 PMWell done to Slats btw. Still the man.
Congrats Eric. Hell of a yarn. Give that puppy a big old bowl (of food!) for me.
Posted by: at November 8, 2005 06:49 PMhow'd you find him eric? jeez.
Posted by: at November 8, 2005 06:57 PMpolitics and anything is a bad combo, unfortunately these elections have a huge impact on peoples lives. When Elei Weisel wrote about his experiences in Nazi concentration camps during WWII he wrote:
"Hatred didn't cause the Holocaust, empathy did."
True Politics aren't fun but America's lack of empathy and activism has allowed Republicans and some Democrates to take from the poor and give to the rich, wage war on peoples who don't have the means to harm us, and maybe worst of all continually destroy and distrespect the environment.
They give us solutions for our problems... war, school cuts, more drilling, hatred twords gays, and tax breaks so we can go shopping.
I continue to babble, so what. Republicans are ASSHOLES
