Yesterday�North Coast Oregon

Pulled into ** at 9am...sunshine!

Checked the surf...some pretty nice looking rights but too unruly a paddle and of course no one was out.

Went to work till about noon and then headed out on the "search".

Checked **...no way...no one out...north was in turmoil...some hope for the beach break but it would entail much brutal pummeling.

Checked numerous other locales with no success. Finally arrived at close to last ditch option. Took the walk, took a look, not too hot...one guy out...two whitewater warriors...watched and watched...thought about continuing north to the final solution...but...

Went back up and got my board...as I walked down I thought about words that would probably best describe my go out...

Sunny...
dumpy...
bumpy...
lumpy...
thumpy...
shifty...
thwartage...
swirling...
frothy...

Those were the good ones. As I watched from the beach "thwartage" seemed the most likely, but I suited up and joined the one guy out. I set up north of him and picked off a head high wave, then another, then another...all lefts and pretty easy paddle back out...took a bit of work to get into them as they were backing of a bit. As the tide came in the waves started to detonate on the bar and I actually had a little cover up...I wouldn't call it a tube or a barrel...but it was definitely fun.

My eyes hurt from the intense glare off the water...surfed a couple hours and got plenty of waves...the one guy went in to be replaced with another...paddled into another pretty fun one that reformed nicely on the inside and rode it in minutes before the sun set...watched it disappear below the horizon as I dried off and packed up.

Pleasantly surprised and much better than it looked.

Man, long time no post. You took O-chem too, e? That was a humbling experience for me too. The first mid term was surreal for me. It was comparable to surfing 10 feet Pipe (although, I would never know). A guy in my class literally pee'd in his pants during that exam. It was CRAZY.

one of those sessions where as you drift a bit the conditions are all over the map. some clean, long ones at first, then bumpy fizzlers, then suck-outs. good-'n'-plenty, or at least prettygood-'n'-plenty.

I started auditing organic chem at Berkeley. I did undergrad in a class of 20 in a tiny school with an admin staff of 2. I was pretty lost in a school of 30,000. I showed up to orgo 2 minutes late because I couldn't find the class room. Turned out to be an auditorium with 250 people stuffed in. I sat behind a post in the back. All I recall is that carbon is somehow invloved and the girl two rows in front of me had a really cute back of the head.

I got the car for a DP Friday morning. This is probably my last weekday dp until March or until I invent the surfing headlamp with flashing ropelights in the leash, maybe some neon lights under the board, too.

wear whatever floats your boat. i'm just bummed that the only friggin color comboes for wetsuits are black on black or black with a mini little teeny strip of blue or something. It's like we're all sheep. I always ask the shop people, "why aren't there any colorful wetsuits?!?" and they say, "because people won't buy them. people just buy black."

I want my green and orange wetsuit please!! someday... someday...

anyone remember Rory Russell? I remember camping with him/next to him at one of the now paved over points in Northern Baja in 79, maybe '80. he wore a bright magenta (what a color) wetsuit with a bright yellow bolt down the chest. he also threw beer bottles against the rocks and broke glass everywhere at night and yelled alot in the water to attract attention. he was an idiot, but man could he surf.

There's this dude that lives down my street, been surfing the beach out front since before I moved here. Anyhow, he has gotten older and how shall I put it? Thicker. He is not tall either. Anyhow, He still rides these little chip boards, when I am out on a longboard or such.

I'm sure that back in the day, 40 lbs lighter, he ripped it up on a little elf slipper.

rory russell...i met "the dog" at a trade show in the early 80's. his surf star status was in decline. bolt had gotten lost in corporate greed shuffles. but i was still stoked to meet a "legend" until i realized that my once goofy footed hero had been reduced to a sloppy drunken loud-mouth. i took my poster of him barrelled at pipe down after that. it was the first of many surf heros that after meeting them...well they weren't heros any longer.

bstah you're a local beach celeb. just like everyone is in hollywood celeb's business, local beach folk are in your business whether they know you or not. anyway, maybe now you can relate to jessica simpson.

I'd go so far as to call blakestake a local D-list celebrity, and I'd put even e up there too. D-list is the level that doesn't include any perks, but people stare at you on the bus because they are trying to remember where they know you from. Granted, they do not nearly have the status of Bushman of Fisherman's Wharf, or Frank Chu, but maybe someday we'll see them downtown with a clever sign yelling at a wall and remember back to when we knew them from the internet.

I switched to my leaky wetsuit with royal blue arms cause I like the distictive style. I look much better when I first get into water and am flailing around yelling, "Cold, cold, cold."

I wish I could buy a piece of Blakestah's toenail from ebay. I would wear it around my neck on big days.

I am moving too. To a town with good surf. Then, I am going to start a surf report, and tell the locals that are offended that they have no right to be, that in MY judgment it is all good. And my judgment is superior because I have a grad degree. Then, after several years of the surf reports, I am going to move again. But I will not notice the offended persons in my wake, because I cannot see over the top of my upturned nose, which happens to almost join with my brain swollen forehead.

There are 10,000+ surf forecast websites out there so STFU, quit whining, quit looking at prono and remember not to ever apologize for anything, it means that you are giving up your integrity.

When all is said and done, the amount spent on Tuesday's election in California will easily surpass the more than $241 million that John Kerry spent running for president last year, and could even top the $306 million that President Bush spent to win re-election.

Jeez, Blakestah, no need to be so cool and aloof. Many of us have looked at your site for years and are just curious where you are going, just like we might be curious as to where a favorite newspaper columist or co-worker who we only are vaugely aware of might be moving. Also, given the cost of living here and the sorry state of schools, lot's of people consider leaving the coast and are curious regarding the geographic choices of those who actually take the plunge. It's just one of those things that's mildly interesting. Get over yourself.

a few years ago people used to bust me in the water every few days, "are you e?" but over the last year there hasn't been any of those.
I feel like the site is more of a community thing than my thing.. i'm just another schmoe who likes photos of glassy waves and the occasional Kaiser bikini post. another cube-shackled computer drone.... is it 5:30 yet?

If you're in a Union you CAN opt out, but that circumvents the collective action principal anyway so why be in the union.

If you are a stockholder you can vote on some issues set before you, but not political donations.

As an employee of a corporation you have no sway over political donations at all.

As a consumer you can vote with your purchases but it requires quite a bit of research into the products you want/need/must have.

So really, collectives/union have the most say and control. Hence the right's problem with unions.
