Stormy.
Wind, rain, thunder and lightning.
Giant, wild, dirty waves.
I'm sure certain zones were firing like rabid banshees over the weekend.
Were you getting pitted?
Braving the armageddon winds at some undisclosed point break?
Or were you sitting on the couch with your girl, sipping tea and snuggling under the blankets?
I know what i was doing.
AI wins Pipe and the Triple Crown.
Slater knocked out in the semis with an interference call.
Wardo barely makes the WCT next season with an injury wildcard.
Bobby Martinez easily in there with a 2nd place finish on the WQS.
Will Adriano De Souza soon be the first Brazilian World Champion?
We'll soon find out.
Reading a fun skateboarding book called "Scarred for Life."
It's made up of 11 mini-biographies of different skateboarders. So far i've read about Hosoi, Bob Burnquist, Jay Adams, a women from Oregon and a guy from NYC named Rodriguez. The Hosoi and Jay Adams stories are pretty gnarly, both guys spent periods of time in Hawaiian prison for meth-related crimes. Also it seems that Jay Adams spent about 6 months in prison in the States in the 80s for starting a fight that led to the death of guy in LA. I guess Jay was going through a "fuck-em-all" Suicidal Tendencies super-punk stage. Drinking and doing drugs and getting in fights and "not having a good night unless I ruined someone else's night." Apparently one night he was out in the streets of Venice Beach with a group of punk friends when they saw an interracial gay couple holding hands on the sidewalk. Jay approached them and started yelling racial and sexual slurs and began pushing and trying to start a fight. The black guy stood up for himself and Jay and one of his friends beat them down to the ground. Then all the punks descended and began kicking and punching the two guys. Eventually the black guy died. Jay went to prison, but only for 6 months.
ugly.
Also reading a book called "Chasing the Trane," by J.C. Thomas. It's a biography of John Coltrane, spattered with tons of first-hand quotes from his friends, cohorts and his own mouth. Some Coltrane facts that you may not have known:
- Suffered excruciating tooth pain. eventually removed many of his teeth.
- Alcoholic and heroin addict until he quit both cold-turkey by locking himself in his room for one week and subsisting on water supplied by his wife.
- Loved sweet potato pie.
- Studied classical music (Bartok, Debussy, Stravinsky)
- Interested in Eastern philosophy/culture (yoga, raga, Islam)
- Played Alto, Tenor and Soprano sax during his career.
- Also played Clarinet and piano.
- Loved Harp music.
- Lived in Philly for a long time.
- Practiced like a man possessed. Tons of theory, scales, harmony, etc.
- Played in Dizzy's band, Monk's band, Miles' band and others before heading his own band.
- That's his voice at the end of the opening track of A Love Supreme.
Coltrane is the man.

Cool GVB post over the weekend about the great art show at Soularch (between 45th and 46th and Judah):
Uh...__, E - the title for the show is copyrighted. Sorry. I have to sue.
Thanks for the review. Venue small and oddball. Art good. A friend yesterday said that art was dead and that I was beating a dead horse and havn't we been through this before and how much did it cost you and will you make any money?!
Beat downs and long paddles - humiliation and glory in the water. Far and few between. It's only a ride; a great wave, a shitty good wave, a frosty down-the-line - 100 yard run, an off the lip. a big floaty drop; endless paddling - freezing cold. It's all good. Charlie Callahan is the artist painting the sea creatures.
Bring a check book to SOULARCH ------

Two thumbs up for the ultra-core guy that was trunking it while I was at PP on Saturday afternoon. Couple of good waves out there.

Posted by: at December 19, 2005 11:02 AMI saw this wave on the webcast Saturday, towards the end of the Pipe Masters final. Andy Irons got about 10 ft above the lip. I wonder if he landed on his deck as he "hit the reef" or what, he seemed fine afterwards. Here's what he later had to say about the ride:
“The wave came off the reef and doubled up a bit,” said Irons. “I pulled in behind the section and came through it then managed to get back in another little barrel. I then tried a flying air and landed on the reef. It was one of the only waves in the final that came in clean.”

Posted by: conflict of interests at December 19, 2005 12:24 PMme and my girl snuggled in our bed and watched the pipeline semis and finals on the computer while the storm rolled in and i have to say that AI's 10 point ride gave me a new appreciation for him. the way he set up for that second barrel was truly a thing of beauty. even my girl really appreciated it and she's not much of a surfer.
kelly's interference seemed bogus to me, but i'm no contest judge.
Posted by: steamwand at December 19, 2005 12:30 PMI really enjoyed the webcast from Pipe too. Those guys make an incredibly dangerous wave seem like child's play. Slater and AIrons are head and shoulders above the rest. I want to go over next year to watch in person. Contests don't impress me much, but the Pipe Masters is like the superbowl of surfing, and you can watch with only a couple thousand people on the beach.
Beyond the epic barrel riding, I have to say the cutbacks and airs were pretty awesome too. Sunny Garcia's cutbacks and no hands bottom turns, Occy's laybacks, Slater's 10 on Friday in blown out conditions, it was all good.

Posted by: $$$ at December 19, 2005 01:12 PMI don't think Slater was knocked out of the Semi's due to interference. He was never really there. The interference call came toward the end of the heat. He only had two waves at that point. I think the scores were close to a 0.5 and a 1.5. Not exactly but something like that. Of course, Slater is capable of pulling some amazing waves out of his hat. I just don't think he had it in him during that heat.
Technically speaking, he could not have matched the others scores as he was being judged on 1.5 waves due the call. He would have needed more than two perfect scores to win.
Posted by: Dennis at December 19, 2005 01:40 PMAcording to "Chasing the Trane", Cotrane loved butterscotch lifesavers. The photo of the guy with the dog made me laugh.
Posted by: Joe O at December 19, 2005 02:05 PMAll this talk of computers in bed and snuggling....
Ok, actually, I have a legit question: Has anyone ever hooked up their computer to a high-res TV (LCD/Plasma/HDTV) and streamed something to their TV?
Consider this, you cast the Pipe Masters via computer but to your big screen. If you are at home, sweet, kick back with your favorite frosty beverage. If not at home, record with your Tivo.
In other news, looks like BVB has gotten soft over the holidays. I expect him back to his true form after the new year.

Posted by: scott at December 19, 2005 02:32 PMi got it
Posted by: burgular at December 19, 2005 02:35 PMI think the resolution transmitted by those webcasts is really low and would look very blocky on a big screen. You can see this if you make the stream go to full screen on your 17" monitor at home/work.
Posted by: steve at December 19, 2005 02:48 PMhow about a projector?
Posted by: at December 19, 2005 02:49 PMNah, it doesn't really matter what the display is if the source content is heavily compressed.
Posted by: steve at December 19, 2005 02:51 PMshould work with a projector. just again low signal resolution.

you need HD video and a DVI (digital video Interface) connection from computer to TV to make it look good.

Posted by: sd_rider at December 19, 2005 08:21 PMserious energy, I think you just helped me figure out an ancient mystery that has plagued my understanding of the weather since i first started studying amateur surf-related meteorology...
Why do we get North Swell and South Storm Winds from the same low pressure systems!?!?
BECAUSE THEY ROTATE! It all makes perfect sense on that nice map. They spin, and the part hitting us comes up from the south, but the other side of the circle spins down a nice NW fetch for us, woohoo! And when the storms hit Oregon or Vancouver, it's even better.
Come on mysto blocking SW High and send the rain away! (And batten down the hatches if that big mama low charges her charging chargeables ashore.)
Posted by: j.o.c at December 19, 2005 10:15 PMyeah, we named it. we're big, we're cold and we're nasty, just like the waves we ride. We are the SUNSET RIDERS and when we're not at our computers geeking we're throwing buckets and turning heads. And if KCLB doesn't like it we'll hack their Suicide Girls accounts. We're tranny and proud. And you thought we were dot goners.
