mavs
My friend Dan is both a serious surfer and meteorologist. He plots shipping routes for huge cargo ships. Once in a while he sends out an email describing some surf session. Below is an email about surfing Mavs:
------------------
Mavericks January 5, 2006
We'll, I've rode my 10' 4" the last three sessions in a row,
(mavs, swift, mavs) so it is officially my shortboard.
Yesterday Mavericks was tow only with 40' faces. I was wishing I had a ski. Oh well, only one or two clean tow days a year - Surfed Swift. Those 20 waves I would have caught would have been about 150 bucks a piece, but I'm sure they would have been worth every penny.
Anyway, we went up insta-crowd style like the old days coming down from Napa to go surfing: Matt, Max, Tristan, and I with four big boards on top.
It was Tristan's first time, and I wish Austin was there because he's
great at scaring the rookies. I did my best though in his absence.
It was right at high tide (a little over 4') when we paddled out. We looked at going out the north end, but there was a lot of surge coming though so we decided to go out the south end. Ryan walked past us and took a while on the rocks, but made it out through the north eventually. Doc was behind him, but opted to paddle the long way too. When we got outside, there was only like 5 guys out owing to the high tide. Ryan had beaten us out, and we saw him nab a nice one while we were paddling out.
It was pretty weird out there due to the raw swell again, and
because the angle was straight west. Very glassy though. A big wide swinger came in not long after we had got out, and I actually paddled over the north side of the peak - it was so wide. Max was really the only one in position to get it, but was pretty late. No one went. Another similar wave came in and Max and I were in position. We paddled for it side by side, but I couldn't get in and pulled back. Max was further on the shoulder, but found a steep part and looked to be in. We watched him from the back getting to his feet after the wave had already seemed to break. His board went over the falls
and sucked him back. Three more waves were coming, and he was in
no-mans-land. Guess he punched through the second one and made it over the next two. His heart rate was near 180 I bet! He claimed no points were scored, but I begged to differ ha ha.
I got a medium one shortly after, but it was a short ride, and I
got mowed by the bigger wave behind it, 1-1. I was on my way back out when another bigger set came in. Someone was going, but I couldn't tell who tell I got closer. It was Tristan on Matt's 9' 2". I hooted him. He was on the board just like that. Max took off on the next wave, the biggest one in the set. He was on the corner and got completely blasted by a huge spit right as he was getting up, but made it. I hooted again, it was cool to see your buddies on waves right after I got one. When we had got back out, Tristan
was smiling. I go, "It must be like crack…you're addicted now."
More people came out. I got a couple more smaller ones. Matt
just missed a nice one.
Keith and Dan Malloy were out this time. Guess Dan's hooked.
Keith had been out once last year, and after his brother's stories from the previous day, probably didn't need much coaxing to come back up. I shared my second wave of the day with Keith.
Then a bit later, Tristan and I partied on his second wave. We
faded back toward the white water trying to connect the next section, and Tristan got blown up by the whitewater. It was fun to watch. Paddling back out, we saw Keith get a nice left.
The body-boarder paddled out with another couple guys. I
introduced myself to Tim, the guy that had just recently got attacked outside mushroom rock about a month earlier. This was the first time I had seen him out. He was riding the board with the shark teeth dings on the bottom as it was his only mavs board.
The body-boarder took off on a chucking wave with another guy
behind him. Tristan and I were right there to see him getting sucked up and over the falls. After doing an unintentional barrel roll, he was sent down along with the other guy. It was very entertaining! Wish I could see that one again on video.
Dan got a really nice drop a bit later, but no where near as heavy as the two the other day. He and Ryan had the sickest drops of the day.
I got another medium one that stood up right as I was getting up.
It was super steep, and I could see the lip coming down over my left
shoulder. The explosion from it hit me pretty hard at the bottom of the wave, but I was able to make it. Max took off on one and got chucked while I was on the inside, so I didn't get to see it...Damn. I did get to see some humor though paddling back out... There were two guys riding a nice one that had a really steep third section forming up. It got really vertical, and the guy in the back was leaning so far back, that he fell off the back of his board and got sucked up and tossed in the air with the lip. I watched to see if he was ok, and it took like 10 seconds for his board to stop tomb-stoning and come back up. You got to love those inside ledge sections!
It was getting late in the afternoon. I had gotten another
smaller one, and was inside again to see maybe the biggest wave of the day. Tristan was paddling for it with Max going also about 15 feet farther over on the shoulder. Tristan got held in the lip for a second, and I thought he was chucked, but he managed to get back on the face. Then a huge spit hit him and knocked him a bit sideways. He held on a bit out of control, and tracked wide onto the shoulder. It was a bomb for sure, but I guess he didn't get into the next ledge because he had been knocked so wide onto the shoulder. He went in on that one.
Turns out that same wave had maybe caught a couple people, but
definitely caught the body-boarder perfect, and when I got back, the
guys were talking about how he had hit bottom. When we came in at sunset, Tristan told us how he had seen half a body-board bounding in next to him. He picked it up and gave it back to the body-boarder I guess. I'm sure many have you have seen a body-board crease and bend, but has anyone seen one get ripped in two pieces!? I'd hate to see an x-ray of someone's back if that lip had hit someone just right!
Tristan crew up surfing in Santa Barbara, and was there the last
two weeks. He said every day was really good. He's surfed all the best waves down there, and said it was cool to see the Malloy's at mavs. He'd seen them out many times over the years down south. Max asked him how that wave was when we got back to the car, and he said, "That was the best wave of my life!" I told him, "Just wait till you get a wall all the way to mushroom rock." Ahh the ying and yang of surfing mavericks…Tristan gets the best wave of his life while the body-boarder gets the worst wave of his life.
It kind of shut down the last 15 minutes, and the whole lineup had to paddle in. Matt was talking to Doc on the way in, and Doc had said that he had paddled out at O.B. on the big Wednesday (this one Jan. 4th, not Dec. 21st) but couldn't make it out. His first time not making it out in a long time, that crazy bastard.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at January 9, 2006 10:48 AMI got to the beach at something like 8 AM on Satuday morning...no one out surfing. I wondered why. Waves looked to be shoulder high, clean on the outside if not a pain to get out from the inside. Tide must be real high, as it looks like there is only a narrow strip of sand. Then I see some guy walking by who is really tiny...oh wait, my whole sense of scale was off. The man was normal sized, beach was normal size, waves not shoulder high. I tooled around on the inner bars for an hour...I wasn't going near the ourside. As I was leaving I saw some guy climbing down the shore protection south of the zoo with what musta been a 9'+ pintial. Large.

Posted by: otf at January 9, 2006 11:03 AMTo weigh in on the "allowed to surf" conversation, I do not own a car of my own. However, I was blessed with a wonderful girlfriend that sleeps until 11AM and has a car with a rear seat that folds down. If she ever breaks up with me, my personal ad is gonna look like this:
m,28, seeks female with car that has car with roof rack, house with garden hose and clothes line. Location near ocean and narcolepsy a plus. Age, looks, weight, employment, personality not important. Also, I frequently smell like low tide.

Posted by: limevoodoo at January 9, 2006 11:21 AMAndrew, that was me with my 9-6. It was a very tough paddle, especially on a board so thick. Very fast north rip. 10-12' faces out there, maybe some bigger. I caught one wave and got a serious cramp in my side. i no longer judge the conditions by the size of the waves but by the difficulty of the swim. End of session.
Yesterday mid afternoon at the zoo was pretty nice. ENE wind and some clean sets. Dry hair paddle from my secret spot.
Spent the morning at the De Young for family day. It's a fatanstic addition to SF. I do miss the grand scale of some of the rooms in the old one and the old SFMOMA.
Hope you all got some surf. My back is really sore but I'm planning on surfing no matter what. Please pass the ice and ibuprofen.

Posted by: at January 9, 2006 12:47 PMTook the family on a walk on the seawall right before sunset last night. It was gorgeous out, but the water looked rough, especially on the inside...just a lot of current messing things up. As we approached the north end, half-a-dozen fire-trucks came roaring up. Immediately a guy jumped out of the first one with his binoculars, then some others posted up on the wall looking out to sea. The rescue-swimmer was in his suit and ready to go for a swim. I overheard the dispatcher on the radio saying they tried the person's cell phone again, but got voicemail. Seemed like a pretty serious situation until I overheard a concerned citizen ask one of the firefighter's what they were looking for?
"Somebody from the cliff house called to say they saw somebody floating in the water, clinging to a board."
Lots of heros joined in on the search, identifying the lone soul in the water - on a sponge kicking into steep close-outs.
Doh!
That'll be $25k in municipal funds for a false alarm caused by an Oklahoma tourist who mis-took a body boarder for a ship-wreck survior clinging to a board. Almost immediatly, all the trucks packed up and sped back up the hill...heads shaking and the swimmer bummed 'cause he's gotta get out of a dry wetsuit.
Bummer on the mistake, but impressive response by the SFFD.
Here's a legit resue story from the Chronicle:
Rescued woman spoke to dispatch via cell phone
Suzanne Herel, Chronicle Staff Writer
Monday, January 9, 2006
(01-09) 11:24 PST STINSON BEACH -- A 24-year-old San Rafael woman who drove her car off Highway 1 was rescued after talking to dispatchers on her cell phone for more than an hour early today, authorities said.
Miranda Leigh Banes was flown to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, said California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Land.
Banes called 911 around 12:20 a.m., Land said.
"She couldn't tell anybody where she was other than that she was near the coast and she could see the ocean," he said.
Dispatchers were able to narrow down her location to Marin County, and a helicopter crew spotted her 1993 Honda down an embankment off Highway 1 just south of Stinson Beach around 1:30 a.m.
Banes will face charges of driving under the influence after she is released from the hospital, Land said.
No one else was involved in the accident.

Posted by: bbr at January 9, 2006 01:23 PMjust got back from a couple weeks at an island group in the south pacific (at least some of them) that like these north swells. By the time they get there, they are long and groomed. What a surf fest. It never got below head high, never more than double over. The funny thing is that after all that talk a few weeks ago about Brazilians and what dicks they are, I basically surfed with Brazilians. Totally cool little group, mellow and polite. Must have been we were all over forty, and just wanted to relax and groove on some waves. Anyway, made some great Brazo friends.

Hey mexi, did you score in Peru recently? how is their summer surf (swell wise)? same as europe or shit ass norcal? is it consistent?
Posted by: at January 9, 2006 01:41 PMyer next Andrew!!
Posted by: at January 9, 2006 01:43 PMRe that rescue story - had the same thing happen to me last year at sloat.
Was out on my own on a big day, no one else daft enough to get in the water I guess...snapped my leash on a big close out...so played around in the waves for a while then bodysurfed my way in. Picked up my board (sponge) and walked up to my car.
Suddenly GC helicopter arrived right over wear I had been surfing. A worried feeling came over me. Which was compounded when two high speed GC boats pulled up. Then the parking lot filled up with park rangers, cops and a fire engine. Crazy scene to say the least.
A skulked over to a cop, and yes sure enough some women had called them on a pay phone (I am guessing the ones by the toilets) and reported someone out in big waves (presuming she thought I was drowning!). Although never connected the fact that I had a wetsuit on with that fact I might be pursuing some sort of physical activity in the water!
Guess a tourist or the like wouldn't have any idea , no doubt she thought she was doing a good deed.
Anyhow the response from the GC was highly impressive to say the least. Was an embarrassing scene, with the parking lot a buzz with talk. Funny how things work out. I was loading my stuff up and I heard someone on a cell phone saying there had been a shark attack. Another bunch I talked to said the person was still out there, and tried to point out some kelp as being a floating body!
Anyhow once I had given the official word to the cops I made my exit. Not sure what I could have done to prevent someone who wasn't aware of the water from calling something like that in. But impressive to see the GC in action.
Posted by: ankors at January 9, 2006 01:47 PMPeru was super fun, shoulder high little nuggets, surfed with between 4 and 10 people, right reef love. Chile was a tad smaller but fun and empty. The best was Brazil, cool people, suprisingly empty warm waves in the AM, crowded after 10am, and there was a swell running.
Posted by: Mexi at January 9, 2006 02:03 PMLast year a friend and I were waved out of the water by a frantic beachgoer who claimed that sharks were approaching us. We got to shore and saw he was wearing an "Im from Kansas" cap then looked at where we were surfing only to see a dolphin swimming around.
Posted by: traut at January 9, 2006 02:08 PMMexi, when were you in Peru? i just got back from Lima last week. nothing great this trip, head high at best, surfed a super super agressive left beach/reef called puerto viejo, i have never seen so many people paddling for a waist high sectiony peeler.

Posted by: Dickey Mora at January 9, 2006 02:21 PMImagine my surprise aside from seeing the usual suspects but I spie none other than Hackey and Sackey sitting left of the pit!
I rode almost every wave and kicked out at the jetty. Each time paddling back out I saw Hackey and Sackey charging the chargeable lefts switch-stancing and sharing the open faced waves. In the lot we shared a Chirstian moment together clasping hands, hugging and kissing our fellow surf bretheren. Amen.
Parmenter is such a bitter old man.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at January 9, 2006 03:09 PMallow me to rant here:
I bought one of these overpriced Apple Laptops last summer. Thought it would be perfect to use to edit videos of the kids and I wanted to get that Apple "experience" that Mac Users tout as the greatest thing next to a night on Heather Graham's yoga ball.
well, in the 5 months that I have owned my Powerbook, running the latest Mac OS called "Tigger", I have crashed it (hung the system so that it needed a power cycle in order to come back online) no less than 4 times. Shocking that the superior Mac OS operating system, with all of the built in iFucking-Am-iBetter-than-Windows software is so unstable.
so, then on Saturday, i load a CD ROM that came with my $300 "AppleGayCare" support contract that would supposedly cover the product that would never crash. well, this CD-ROM was supposed to check my Maccy for any errors in the memory, processor, and Hard Drive. I ran it, it took 3 hours, and guess what, it found a couple errors that it said "i will just go ahead and repair those volumes on your disk". I said OK, I mean this CD came directly from Apple, it has an AppleCare logo on it, and it says on the box "Compatible with OSX Tigger".
Well, since I "repaired my hardrive" it hasnt been able to boot up. I took it in to the 'Genius Bar' at the Apple Store at the mall, the 'genius' said it was corrupted and pretended to not have seen this problem before with CD's that APPLE sends out with it's support contract. PHUCK!!!
so, he told me it would take 48 hours to rebuild the drive, and guess what? I lost all my pics and files. KILLER!!! Macs rule
PHUCKING PHUCK!!
for the record, I have been working on more Windows machines than I can remember over the last 15 years and have never had this problem. laptops and desktops. IBM, Gateway, Compaq, Toshiba, Gateway, even Dell. i've beaten the crap out of them, and never had a bad drive.
I trusted Apple, and they let me down. Phuck Apple! this "superior OS marketing hype" is just that, hype.
i had most of my shit backed up, but i hadnt backed up my christmas photos yet.
here is a hint to all of your mac users out there. BACK YOUR SHIT UP, MACS ARE JUST AS UNSTABLE OR MORESO THAN WINDOWS MACHINES!!!!!!!
Ok, i'm done ranting. i had to get that off my chest.

Mac OS 9 blew chunks...
The mac iBooks are not so durable.
But with a Mac on OS X you
!) never get a virus
2) never crash the operating system
3) get a more functional Word than you get on Windows
4) have a Unix backbone, so when an app crashes you can drop to a window command line and kill it with extreme prejudice (and it dies)
But the thing that always gets me is the lack of crashes. Whenever I need to do office-type stuff in Windows I can't stand the crashes and lockups.
Many workplace have one admin for every 20 Windows users, and one for every 1000 Mac users. Mainly they do recoveries on virus infested machines.

i've only had word crash my system a couple of times, but never had as many lockups as this friggin mac. damn.
see you guys at macworld. i'll be wearing the fitted black turtleneck and jeans.

viruses are for operating systems with no concept of permissions
Maybe with your crashes you need to learn how to open a terminal and type "top" and "kill"

Posted by: Steve Jobs at January 9, 2006 05:22 PMmy new boss insisted on a mac although the rest of us are on PCs. in the beginning i'd send her reports and she'd say 'there's something wrong with that file. you must have a virus. macs don't have viruses.' turns out it was user error. over and over again. her computer regularly crashes and the tech guys are more than tired.
my office PC has never crashed. and my five-year old PC at home is still running strong. crash free.
i've got no problem with macs, just the users who claim superiority.
i feel like i've said this before....
Posted by: yawn at January 9, 2006 05:28 PM"never" = it will happen.
you watch.
as soon as Mac OS starts to get a real piece of Windows' 94% market share.....
no use writing viruses for such a small percentage.
i dont know if the femm-bot mac guys will be able to handle a virus. "oh no, they told us it would never happen. what do we do now, uncle steve???"

Posted by: at January 9, 2006 05:29 PManyone ever surfed in thailand? I might be heading to Phuket and might try to score.
Posted by: bz880 at January 9, 2006 05:30 PMyawn,
Posted by: at January 9, 2006 05:30 PMyou summed it up perfectly.
mac users tend to blame ignorance/inexperience on PC's or PC 'viruses' instead of assuming that they themselves, or their beloved Mac's were the guilty party. i see it over and over again with my friends that are Mac to the core. they tend to have money too, so buying an overpriced Mac is "worth it" for the quality.
there are waves in thailand but i wouldn't bother bringing boards. wannasurf breaks down the spots. there's a surf shop in phuket that rents boards. i've caught decent waves in the gulf and on phuket.
but you're surely not going to phuket for surf. you dirty man...

picasso, man with guitar, american gothic, van gogh's bedroom, many, many by john singer sargent.. a few winslow homers. homer's oceans are amazing. the power and the isolation. stunning.

Macs are not immune, but viruses play 1/100th the role in machine maintenance that they do on PCs. I work in a large mixed computer workplace with admins that maintain the PCs and Macs. There is a completely disproportionate amount of time spent on the PCs. This was not the case a few years back when Macs used to get viruses too. The Mac OS was designed before the internet, before viruses had an impact.
Today, either the workplace maintains a rigid set of policies on machines, or there are admins running around fixing Windows machines everywhere. You cannot even put a Windows machine on the network to download the patches, it will be infected before the download is finished! The amount of infrastructure required to maintain a Windows workplace is ENORMOUS, and good luck finding a sys admin who administers a mixed workplace who disagrees.
The problem is that Windows enables users to have permissions and open services BY DEFAULT. Mac OS does not allow open services or permissions by default, and makes it really tough to enable services.
This is a basic infrastructural rule of security. Secure by default, and no more permissions than are necessary for the user or application at the time.
Microsoft can and will fix this whenever they start losing market share. Until then, they will continue to market anti-virus software to get even more money per client. They ship a broken product and expect you to pay to keep it fixed.
And that aspect doesn't really bug me. I turn off all non-essential Windows services, disable ActiveX in IE, and secure my machines properly and I do not get viruses on Windows. MOST PEOPLE WILL NEVER DO THIS, which is why it is a problem in the workplace.
The lockup problem is one I cannot fix, and it pisses me off to no end. I wish there were a solution that let me use Word and a browser half a day without locking up. Frequent rebooting quit being a way of life when I started using a Mac whenever possible.
And you know what?? The Microsoft Office on the Mac works BETTER than the Office on Windows!
Of course, I also use Windows. When I have to. I backup my data on Windows 10 times more frequently and am still more likely to lose it. Windows locks on me 10 times more often, even though I use it 5% as often. Its a great OS, with a few, VERY FIX-ABLE problems that the monopolist will fix quickly just as soon as it impacts market share.
Until then, live with it.
Posted by: at January 10, 2006 05:06 AMAndrew, UCLA over USC, but UC-Irvine or UCSD are better than either.
SoCal is a car-place. Much tougher to live there without a car than the Bay Area.
Posted by: at January 10, 2006 05:07 AMUCLA is closer to good waves and the bus on the north end of campus will take you to three different right points and it runs every hour.

Lastly, I am still missing the mind numbing perfection of November 2004 four week long glass festival at OB.
