Harmony Studios - Total Eclipse
One of the doors on the second floor of Harmony Studios is covered in criss-crossing patterns of black and yellow electrical tape. Little papier-mache figurines that look like squirrel heads with huge teeth and bug-eyes poke out from the mesh of tape on the door. Very strange. The music, or sounds, emanating from within are also highly unusual. Sometimes you'll hear high-pitched scraping noises over a foundation of sub-sonic rumbling. Sometimes you'll hear a melange of overlapping whistles that create resonant harmonic overtones. But mostly you just hear this voice. A thick, dark, baritone that hums quirky, slightly-disturbing melodies. There is something forbidding and not-quite-right about this room and its occupant. Something that gets under your skin and makes you squirm and worry. Something mysterious and uncomfortable. But also something foreign and intriguing. Something altogether new.
Inside the taped-up door sits Bodkin Shreve, the man scrutinized by many and posited possible alien origins by some. Born in Kiev, Ukraine to a ballerina mother and a butcher father, Bodkin popped into this world in a characteristically unique and bizarre way. His father held many wacky ideas about life and science and also about his profession as a butcher. He believed that if his newborn child were to be blanketed in the warm, gooey uterus of a freshly butchered cow he would be blessed with good health and a strong constitution his entire life. And so it was. To this day, 42 years later, Bodkin rarely gets sick and enjoys a strong, able body. Growing up in the Ukraine, Bodkin showed early brilliance in math, music and science. But he was most noted for his prowess in chess. He caused a stir within the chess community for his non-traditional use of both rooks in a highly calculated forking pattern that required a complex series of setup maneuvers to orchestrate. It wasn't the most effective strategy but it garnered praise for it's aesthetic ingenuity. Bodkin began his music career by playing piano and the clarinet, but quickly shed them in favor of building his own electronic instruments. His early tinkering with magnetic pitch-shifters led him to the Theremin, which he altered and produces sounds never heard before.
Today Bodkin is still using his altered Theremin. But over the years he has built a virtual orchestra of self-produced instruments. For roughly a decade he worked in the materials science wing of the Lawrence Livermore Lab in the East Bay. He was hired on as a theoretical material analyst and given the task of inventing lighter, stronger metallic alloys. He probably spent as much time in that decade working on the resonant properties of these alloys searching for new musical sounds as he did looking for their properties of strengh and durability. He found a few favorites and used them to create strange cymbal-like instruments that he bowed with violin-bows to create moaning, groping otherworldly tones. Bodkin also spent a lot of time on the computer, crafting algorithms to shape and shift the inputs of his analog instruments. He worked with Elliot Sharp for 6 months using the fibonacci sequence to create an altered tuning structure for his theremin and to compose a long orchestral piece that was intended reflect the exponential growth patterns inherent in nature.
Bodkin's fans are small in number but large in gusto. He enjoys a cult following and all his releases (under the name of Total Eclipse) are snatched up quickly by his followers and analyzed and dissected intensely on the internet.

Posted by: friend #1 at January 10, 2006 10:34 AMQuestion re-posted for the masses: UCLA or USC as a place to surf - (San Diego, Santa Cruz or SB not an option, looking at law). Anyone know what it's like to get to Davis to surf? Met a guy at Flieshackers one morning, med student at Davis, said he was up from LA looked forward to surfing. I assumed he was nuts, then I realized I don't really know how far it is to Davis.
Posted by: Andrew in Jack London Square at January 10, 2006 10:36 AMe, i totally forgot that i'm going to be out of town, so i won't be able to make the show. i was so looking fwd to doing my laundry while watching live music.
Posted by: lerm at January 10, 2006 10:37 AMAndrew - If you don't own a car, and have lived in a basement for years, how do you think you're going to be able to pay for USC?

Andrew, UCLA WAY better for surfing than USC, but neither is really that good in the scope of California schools that allow you to surf. And I can't imagine living in LA without a car. Hastings would be much better on all counts.
Posted by: blakestah at January 10, 2006 11:01 AMHastings or USF. USC is a good school, but 40 minutes from the beach (surf spots that is). Stay in NorCal if you want to keep your sanity. IMHO.
Posted by: Surfseeker7 at January 10, 2006 11:03 AMsurf schools -- Ha, huge contradicition. Remember Spicoli? No dead beat surfer ever amounted to anything in school. Save your tuition money for sex wax and ganja. Your gonna need it.

I agree with UCSB (UC Smoke Bowls), UCSC (UC Smoke Cones), UCSD (UC Smoke Dank). But maybe not UCLA (UC Lotsa Ass).

What sort of wettie should i bring?is it cheap to hire cars over there or would it be cheaper to buy an old shi*ter? idealy i'ld like a camper but would the cost of getting it on the road for two months be worth it and would it be easy to sell in LA where i fly out????.. any help would be much appreciated. cheers warren
Posted by: Newness at January 10, 2006 11:25 AMDon't forget Boalt at UCB for proximity to waves and an area you are familiar with.
As for surfing and School, I waited until I was halfway through an Engineering Physics degree at Cal before I started stand-up surfing. Started smoking daily about the same time too.
Law school may be a bit tougher though.

Posted by: toad at January 10, 2006 11:30 AMWhat many people don't know about Bodkin is that he was a pioneer in the whole Goa scene and was the man behind the infamous full moon parties.
Surfing leads to smoking.
Posted by: R3W at January 10, 2006 11:38 AMNah, BYU Hawaii is good for going to an OK school with access to unreal waves, but, I don't think that campus has a law school. You could go to UH Manoa law school, which has one of the best international law programs in the country. But, if I had to pick a school better for a law career, go to UCLA.
By the way, I remember reading last month on here about how you can't do a surf safari out in Oahu anymore because all the spots are known and packed out. I've lived there most of my life and only recently discovered UNREAL (and uncrowded too) surf on that island in spots I never would have imagined. So many sick waves in Laie all the way down to the east side. One, in particular, is near the BYU campus and, with the right winds, is like Indonesia.
Several really good breaks in Mokes too. All uncrowded, crystal clear water perfection... ofcourse, with the right winds.
Posted by: at January 10, 2006 11:43 AMOh yeah, and there are a couple of heavy reefs that we've surfed several times out there that break below sea level. They are not found on wannasurf.com, Google, or any other Internet sites, and not even well known amongst the locals.
Posted by: at January 10, 2006 11:48 AMWarren,
Bring a 4/3 wettie and some 5 mil boots, or just buy them here since they might be cheaper than in the UK. 60 days of renting a car is going to run you at least $1800 USD, but dealing with buying a car, registering it, and paying the taxes seems like such a hassle for two only two months. Maybe you should set up in SF as your base of operations and only rent a car occasionally to make forays down South. SF has good public transport and fun things to do when the surf sucks.
Posted by: steve at January 10, 2006 12:09 PMWell at least THEY USED TO BE UNKNOWN. Creep. Naming spots on Oahu is like naming where someone might find a million bucks - why not give us your SSN and bank account information?
Posted by: Kalani at January 10, 2006 12:11 PM"Indonesian " style breaks... Yeah right, twice a year... tops. The places you name and claim are also places where you might get your teeth knocked in.

Posted by: goodmorning at January 10, 2006 12:38 PMrare? whatever. we had it good all last month.
Posted by: at January 10, 2006 12:47 PMSurf and beaches are public domain. Breaks should not to be protected, they may as well be exploited. Simple solution. Have people wait in line for their turn. No one would ever have cause to complain, and if they did not like the crowding/waiting, they would quit or move to other sports with no waiting. Waxing prophetic, spelling pathetic.
Mike the kneeboarder who will happily wait his turn.
Also, get good enough at self defense so no body can intimidate you just for wanting a wave in a localized area. And then we can all spread the info and the wealth of good waves. No body complains about the lines at Disneyland, and they come by the millions waiting hours just for a short ride. No fist fights, no secret, unpublished rides, everyone just gets along. So wait your turn boys, and no one will ever fight over waves or publisizing waves ever again. Sharing is caring and etiquette is king. "No after you, I insist, you are new here, have a wave on us locals, you waited in line fair and square". Enjoy, the problems facing the earth are much larger than who gets to have fun at my formerly owned small take off zone. Now if we could get the guys at fullers, edwards, lunuda, seaside, kellys, and oxnard to see the small mindedness that they are promoting, surfing could be fun again. Cuz its not anymore, unless you can find a peak to yourself and not have to deal with arseholes with evil eyes bent on intimidating newbies with threats of tearing us ones.

Posted by: jenn sterger at January 10, 2006 02:16 PMif i wanted to wait in line for my turn i'd play golf. surfing represents freedom. it has no place being restricted and regulated by authority other than the organic natural order that exists. that doesn't mean i'm an advocate of being a dick or rude either.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at January 10, 2006 02:31 PMBe nice, one person's BLAH might be anothers BLOHG. Besides what's wrong with being nice to fellow surfers and giving waves without thinking long and hard about who "deserves" them?
Posted by: BLAH at January 10, 2006 02:34 PMI see no mention of authority in Mike's post, 3to5.
Purely self-regulation.
Posted by: friend #1 at January 10, 2006 02:36 PMThere is nothing wrong with being nice to fellow surfers, but this whole overanalytical formula for giving and taking waves just gets old. If I am at a populated reefbreak and I have priority, I am taking the wave, period. Just as I would not drop in on someone, I am out there to surf as many waves as I can without treading on anyone else.

Posted by: obro at January 10, 2006 02:51 PMweb, to each his own my friend. im sure you've surfed and will surf way more spots than i have in my lifetime and gotten way better more secluded waves, so you should be that much more stoked than me on surfing imho. maybe my lack of experience, poor spelling and limited travels are why i dont understand the whole protection bit, could be. but sure, ive actually rolled out a red safeway and a wise surfboards at the end of my street if that counts, everyone come surf, but ill probably be in my house though watching American Idol. also i just re read mikes post and ill say i agree with 95% of what he said the whole waiting in line thing would be a bummer, and i dont know if om so good at defending myself. so to re-cap respecting those who came before you and your elders i totally agree with, what i dont agree with is false sences of entitlement and claiming of said entitlement.

Posted by: Aaron Rodgers at January 10, 2006 03:25 PMmike, et al -- some counterpoint:
the problem with public domain is that a lot of "the public" sucks and much of "the domain" is abused. what then?
mother nature is being overwhelmed by human nature.
public policy is never, ever as simple or straightforward as we'd like it to be.
the degree to which people are welcome/unwelcome at the beach i live is adversely affected by many factors, such as: the amount of trash "the public" leaves in/on "the domain", that i have to step through, swim in, pick up, clean up.
i am wary of discounting people's concerns as simple-minded "protectionism" or "localism" when there is often more to it than that, though to be sure, there is plenty of small-minded "turf" mentality out here.
i do believe more in human rights than public property rights.
but not to the extent that i'm gonna welcome the ignorant and/or tolerate ignorance just because it's "the public domain".
tolerating something doesn't mean agreeing with it or welcoming it.
thus, there is still some stink eye left to be cast, and this is, IMO not such a bad thing.
Posted by: scott free at January 10, 2006 03:30 PMLaw school is overrated. If you want to waste 3 years, go surf for 1 and then go to business school.

Posted by: Kaiser at January 10, 2006 03:37 PMoh my! I love her.
Posted by: at January 10, 2006 03:52 PMTime to be a bit of an apologist. I have a knee jerk reaction against lawyers. That's why I became an engineer, so I could build stuff. When I realized I could never afford a home in the bay area, I did some soul searching. Turns out I'm a morally felxible asshole who would sell his mother for a dollar and argue just to be contrary. I might as well put it to good use. While maritime is law is most attractive, I think doing something in which you have no emotional stake (and can slime both sides of the coin), is probably more my speed.
So applications in to USF, Santa Clara, Hastings, and Cal. First two I can get into, second two are a stretch. I figured I might as well try another 1st tier stretch in SoCal. Hawaii is outta the question. I would never do any work ever...almost went there for ocean engineering. Bad enough I did the 4 years for 1.5 year degree at Cal. I got a friend on year 6 of 1 year masters at Manoa.
Smoking weed is also outta the question. I could handle the east coast schwag. These days the hydroponic NASA-grade shit blows my mind. I used to smoke with the random locals out in front of Sea Biscuit (god bless) when I had a twisted ankle, but I'd wake up on the floor face down in a bag of cheetos. I met up with some friends at the Drums and Tuba show, and I had promised them I could get a dude I know from the internet to smoke us up. Despite yelling "Ethan!" between songs, I never did find the man who claims to support the 420.

Try a school in NYC and take the subway to Far Rockaway. No car needed.
Posted by: obro at January 10, 2006 04:50 PMDamn skippy, I'm avoiding growing up. I figure if I can avoid it long enough, I can skip straight from student to retirement. I'm not in love enough with engineering to stick out the renter's wagers, long hours, and lack of flexibility. My degree should put me in Houston working for big oil, but on the whole, I don't think I'm cut out to be an engineer. I'd rather take a career switch before I'm 30 rather than spending the next 25 years regretting never taking the chance on something for which my temperment might be better suited.

Goddamn, the sandbars are nice down here after the last month. shhh.
i disagree with the lawschool/can't surf shit. of course you can, surf in the morning and study all day. is it that hard?
Posted by: Hb at January 10, 2006 05:27 PMjust because I got on with my life, and don't frequent the spots I used to be accepted at, now it seems I have given up my rights permanently because I don't want to show up to surf alone (one breaks "rule")or risk getting my ass kicked or being perpetually stuffed and not being allowed any waves from the peak.
I would like to give Seaside reef a try, I am a competent enough goofy footer to execute a day there. But the lot establishment will keep me away, is that fair? Regulating even where I park to allowing me to have a camera pointed at the waves. This is America??? Alas, The hassle to surf premier breaks is not worth it to me, besides I am a pussy and don't want an ass kicking and a bloody face to go with my surf.
This is the disgusting state of the surf world. The regulation local's surf turf has killed the sense of adventure that used to fill my wide eyed grommethood, to be replaced by a cynicism that hell, its never going to be that fun to go score a couple fun lefts at Seaside point.
(this is only one example) I would also like to grab a couple nice rights at the slot on a regular basis, score Fullers. Not to blab about it just for the joy of riding a few real gems at those locales. Either I need to pony up and get so badass that I fear no man's retribution or shut the fuck up and take up road bicycling or some other non-localized sport. (Actually I have a secret way to get choice waves of my choosing that involves neither a secret spot or super human ass kicking skills, but I am not letting on)
So I quit surfing high profile lessor known killer spots, and other high profile slots, I never been to fullers, have to be happy with willow, never surf the slot, have to be happy at middle peak or indicator when it's not too crowded. And I do love surfing beach breaks that can't get that regulated.
So I am just lamenting the inhumanity that keeps me and everyone else out of the perfect slot most of the time. Maybe its for the best, no surfer wants to wait in line just to get a wave, I am just searching/wishing for some kind of solution that will keep me wet without making me disgruntled and bitter or tax my travel budget to the max.
Why does the stinkeye work anyway? Isn't assault illegal and won't it land the perpetrator in jail?

Posted by: at January 10, 2006 05:58 PMAs a 6 year graduate of the Pepperdine School Of Law I must argue that any library that affords a view of Malibu Pt. from rows upon rows of study stations is the real deal in education. Score a key to Dume, score a girlfriend from some super wealthy family and then hang your freakin' rag on the wall, buy a few seasonal shacks in depressed countries like South Africa and NZ then become one of those gigantic wetsuit crusted relics often seen at Pleasure Pt. on a weekday. Mock the common man, chase ambulances, protect your wealth with the vote, drink heavily and we'll see you at Cowells on the weekends! GO WAVES!
Posted by: Dr. at January 10, 2006 07:13 PMOh my gawd they have run amok. Fullers. Dume. Seaside. The questions you ponder have no meaning. The surf you seek is not upon the water. Me so horny.
yes I am scared of mean old bitter guys who throw rocks against the deck of my surfboard for daring to surf Naples, and then muttering, aren't you looking for El Cap. Its real, the intimidation. Threating violence should be a crime and then the stinkeye would not work anymore. But it does work, because there are lots of people like myself who are afraid of bodily violence. Stinkeye purveyors thrive on fear, like dogs who smell it they capitalize on it to minimize the number of people in the line up. Just make surfing as unfun and unpleasant as possible, and a good number of your competition will stay away. But I am going to get a chain mail wetsuit and then look out, I will become impervious to attack and then I will be attacking those waves I covet but am too scared to surf. don't try to tell me that anybody can surf anywhere without issues simply by not succombing to fear.
Posted by: at January 10, 2006 08:48 PMso what's wrong with being a lawyer any way. andrew, your reasons are valid, your expectations may be a bit off. tedium + decent pay = substance abuse and porsches. dawn patrol and the every once in a while "lunch meeting" can make it work. just don't tell anyone you end up working with what your real priorities are. school is school, the schedule is benign.
Posted by: eric at January 10, 2006 09:58 PMkaiser, i agree business school is a better option, especially if tuition loans are involved and you can get into a decent school. engineer + mba = vc + ferraris. and fuck wicked weasel is just unfair.
Posted by: eric at January 10, 2006 10:01 PMAndrew, with a Masters in Petroleum Engineering and a bent for the law, you should consider working for a Regulatory agency. Doesn't pay quite as well, but it has hella security, lots of time off, schedule flexability, etc. They even let you blog all day on a TI. Those tow in mav's videos download so fast.
On the stinkeye bit... posting on blogs will do nothing towards correcting that trend. Learn to surf well, be respectful, and with age, you will get your share.
