Surfing is OK.
Transworld is funny because they know their demo is 18-30 year old boys so they're not afraid to be politically incorrect.
Water is cool but not worth $10 an issue.
I hate Mondays. But I am also thankful that I have my health, a roof over my head and live in a wonderful place.
Posted by: Haystack at January 30, 2006 10:18 AMsaw dogtown and the z boyz on dvd this weekend. i didn't think it was that bad. i remember a few weeks ago people were posting on how horrible it was. wondering what people thought was sooo bad about it. i mean, not an epic film, but not painful to watch, at least for me. heath ledger's performance was good, i thought. he could make me switch teams.
Posted by: steamwand at January 30, 2006 10:21 AMSteamwand - no switching for you. You have responsibilities now ;^)

Time for your journalism skills to shine once again and interview Brian. Some hard-hitting journalism is in order, no softballs. And one of the talented photogs on this blog should go with you to record and show us how our president really lives.
I hope everyone caught how Brian’s ski trip went this weekend. Classic Brian.
Posted by: Rob Machado at January 30, 2006 10:32 AMSurfed notoriously sharky SC in SC on Sunday. Only two others. Some good looking sets. Not long after I went out they both left so I'm out there alone for about an hour. Nice thick sets coming through regularly. Then it goes flat for about 15 minutes. Now I'm starting to look down alot. Some boils start to show as the tide got lower, but, were they boils or something swimming? Then, a huge lion pops up right near me and I just about shot off the back of my board. Next set, I was outta there. No wind, no people, good waves but definitely had the vibe.
Hope you all got some too.

The wonders of digital artwork. I actually had a lot of fun with that. I was thinking about creating the art using technology, as I am not a visionary and then actually painting it on canvas.

Anyone have first-hand knowledge of how the water quality along the coast was this weekend--from SF to SC. Almost had a go at it this weekend, but seeing brown and yellow foam made me think it wasn't worth it.

Posted by: at January 30, 2006 10:59 AMAs the Winter rain falls the mind takes that long plane ride back to those 'new spots' and warmer waters. Drawing and redrawing the lines.

Plotting the return trip interferes with normal day-to-day activiies, surf addiction grips hard.
Posted by: Dreamer at January 30, 2006 11:01 AMSupernatural tales of infection. A fun winter day. I pulled up at the foot of an avenue. Big peeling bombers on the outside. It had rained the night before. I later found out it was a combined sewer overflow, and that Sancho had walked out to the Vicente drain. Water was practically being pumped out the drain. The volume was so great the water streaked upwards at the exit, forming a fountain of poo. Check it out sometime during a hard rain, it is quite a sight.
Anyway, after a long paddle-out, and many douchings, I roped into a number of fun ones before going home. Went to Avenida for dinner. Had a great burrito. Then the fun began.
At around 2:30 am the stomach rumblings started. It was diarrhea first. 3, 4 times in a row in just two hours. Quick steps. Gross.
Then my GI tract seemed to think the opposite direction needed working too, and it came every 45 minutes for 6 hours.
Needless to say, I felt like an ad for death the next morning, and it wasn't until evening that I could keep a half glass of gatorade down. It was years before I would surf after a rain again.
Most of the other post-surfing illness seem like a real bad cold that lasts a day. I feel really really tired, and have a runny nose starting about a half day after surfing. But that one time I got a bad GI bug, man, it was ugly.
Posted by: at January 30, 2006 11:09 AMSteamwand,
I think people were bagging on "The Lords of Dogtown" movie. That one truly SUCKED!! "Dogtown and Zboys" was good.
Heath Ledger is a switch hitter, so go for it. I guess getting dumped by NAOMI WATTS can do that to ya.....
So glad that "Brahonmyback Mounting" didnt win at the SAG awards last night. Too much riding on the gay hype of that movie. It will win the Oscar though, unfortunately. The really GREAT movies from last year will get looked over, like Capote, Good Night, Crash, and Constant Gardener...

Posted by: PNW at January 30, 2006 11:14 AMSteamwand -- "Dogtown and Z Boys" the documentary was great. It was "Dogtown" the fictional movie based on the Dogtown scene that absolutely sucked. I didn't see it, but when I saw the trailers I didn't need to. Then I heard everyone bitching about how bad it was and that confirmed it.
Posted by: Davo at January 30, 2006 11:16 AMThe dangers of polluted waters are often hidden until later years. Hepatitis, one of the many diseases carried by sewage overflow, can lay dormant and cause severe liver disease before it's even diagnosed.
I surfed Pollutica last year and got a nasty stank funk in my ear. It took 3 months of treatment to get rid of it. Also had a similar sickness as anon above in 1994.

Some seriously bad (and dangerous) behaviour this weekend and it will not be tolerated. Be warned...

Posted by: Searoom at January 30, 2006 11:20 AMOne desperate rain soaked day Cousin Pat and I were walking down the beach in front of where the toilets/pump station has been rebuilt along with the parking lot. A loud 'Wooooshing' noise caused us both to look towards the pump house. My God! Those rusty old metal flaps on the 3 foot pipes were hinged wide open as hundreds of gallons of who knows what spewed out for a solid minute. Then the switch went off, the flow stopped and the silence was deafening. We exchanged knowing glances as we both grew up down South, today was a no surf day. The brown mass swirled out towards the handfull of grumpy longboarders sitting in a tight group just off of the pumphouse. Yell a word of warning? Nah, Lindy locals thrive on that shiite!

amigoism - tale of infection - santa monica in the mid-90's I went out after a big rainstorm, lots of garbage in the water, i remember a piece of carpet wrapping around my leg like an octopus. a few days later i had fire shooting out of my dick. i made no connection between that and the surfing. the dr. said it was probably chlamydia but wouldnt know for a few days. i had just started dating this girl and i totally blamed her and we broke up. when the tests came in a few days later the doc told me it wasnt chlamydia and asked me if i had been swimming in the polluted ocean recently. doh!
tried to make it happen yesterday at ob, rough but quick paddle out but not a lot out there. pretty trippy with massive amounts of foam everywhere and mackers on the outer bars, lots of movement but very little breaking in the middle. there were a handful of people giving it a go. fun but not a lot of rides for me.
Posted by: vons at January 30, 2006 11:31 AMQuote from my doctor when he looked at my bright red balls after a somewhat toxic session: "There's a fungus amoung us!" Took a week to get back to normal, non-itching gonads.....scary when you think about losing those!

Posted by: at January 30, 2006 12:12 PMI've contimplated moving to Pacific a couple times. But the only conclusion I've ever come to is that Pacifica really needs to get its act together. They've been trying for years to attract different tax bases to generate a revenue stream to fix the place up but all to no avail. Last I heard they were trying to promote it as a "toursit destination" for people visiting SF, a destination showcasing the pristine beauty of the coast. They idealized hotels and resturauts apleanty. Lots of luck with that guys.
That place is really a developmental nightmare. The Rockaway shops - what is all that crap? Taco Bell at Linda Mar? Nocal surf shop strip mall on the beach? Aside from the Sharp Park pump house, the Sharp Park promenade is almost pleasant. They should really just bulldoze the whole place and start over. I can only imagine how the public schools are in town - anybody know?
Posted by: obro at January 30, 2006 12:14 PMCrash is a movie with Sandra Bullock. She plays an overly uptight wife of the LA City Attorney played by Brendan Fraser. I liked it. Has a kinda edgy racial undertone to it - playing racism against over-reaction to racism - what is worse...

Somehow when 30% of your entering kindergarteners speak english as a second language you know the schools are gonna suck.
Five years and BVB will move to Marin. Two for kdalle. Right after you get shafted in the SF school lottery, you move. That oughta free up some space in the lineup, but don't worry, Cron breaks just like indo, baybee!

The wave wasnt really working - mushburgers. but you have to wonder what kind of vibe the onlookers on the cliff creates...
This dude who was jockying for posiiton with me got really pissed off at me. For some reason this dude kept backing off when he had position to go and didn't go??? SO I must have looked at him funny with one of those (if you are going for it go for it expressions so we dont all miss the wave). He started acting nutty and splashing around calling me a kook??? I told him "i wasnt in your way I didnt even drop in on you?" That really set him off. He was an average surfer, which is what i am. So I guess he felt shammed by me, which I didnt really mean, or else he was acting terrirorial, I guess both.
After I got out of the water I saw Flea standing in the rain looking bored and talking to the locals.
I think at OB no one would give a damn at all either way.

donut time was GOOD saturday. damn fine.
surfed to the south of sf and saw a few nice ones
mostly shoulder-less bombs and yardsales.
love those ones you barely make it under can
feel the kee-RACK and on the inside, a huge yard sale...
heads and boards....
i think the rub with the lords of dogtown that i know
is that in the opening fricking sequence they are busting
out tricks that have not been invented yet or had not been
done at that time... sorta sullied
the whole movie for me...like that hoops movie out now..

I surfed in San Diego almost every day in the fall of 1999. I surfed no matter what, rain or shine. I started getting this weird extremely viscous and gooey but clear colored mucus in my lungs that I could not hack up but shot up into my throat when I coughed. Puffing ganga constantly so this would happen all the time, I'd take a hit, start coughing, the mucus in my lungs would get loosened up and shoot into my throat, my throat would seize up cause the mucus was so thick, gag reflex kicks in cause I can't breathe and I end up vomiting whatever food was in my stomach plus the mucus in my throat.
It was disturbing, my puke would be surrounded by the gnarly phlegm-mucus-plasma. It finally went away that winter when I moved to Tahoe.

Posted by: Brian at January 30, 2006 03:51 PMIt was a nice try, bagel. But that is strictly off limits. Here at niceness posting pictures of Fort Point is off-limits. However, Fort Point does happen to sit under the most photographed landmark on the US West Coast, one millions and millions of people visit a year. Its surfing makes the NY Times pretty much every year, and SFGate several times a year. And Chuck Lantz puts 10s of thousands of pictures on his web site, and not only do the locals not hate him, they ADORE him. People are just yanking your chain.
Posted by: blakestah at January 30, 2006 03:55 PMSorry blakestah. but. just trying to be vogue via vagueness. Just because other places show photos doesn't make it right. I was the king namer in the past. now i just feel bad about possible exploitation through this site.
Idle thoughts with every photo...

Posted by: no surf = ski at January 30, 2006 04:17 PMWHAT? no more pics of Ft. Point or OB ?
Come on, that is getting highly pretentious to think that a Ft. Point shot on this blog is gonna expose anything.

Posted by: from one hypocrite to another at January 30, 2006 04:31 PMseems kinda hypocritical to me coming from a guy who runs a website that tells you when to surf and when the surf is coming even though he is not a member of the local surf community?
Brian: D.A.D. again. Glad you're finally on line again. I missed seeing the stupid things you write. Doesn't your school have a blog of some sort? This blog seems to be about
Posted by: at January 30, 2006 04:31 PMfungus, big hairy balls, girls bottoms and avoiding "vibes" in the water. Son, I care for you and miss you - don't want to see you end up a panty wasting online envy ridden responder to nothingness.

dont forget Teahupoo. great wave, over photoed. lets see some more pics.
good call blakestah. dont show pics of how it was, but forecast swells so that more people can go surf. makes sense, yeah!!!!
more jamie o'brien shots from pipeline please. also, i'd really like to see a good shot of Kalani Throbb surfing Lani's or Off The Wall. YAAAH!!!

Posted by: steve at January 30, 2006 04:55 PMPlease don't start down this tired old pathetic road of 'naming' & 'claiming' talk once yet again.
Have we not flogged this horse to death through a number of different lives?
In case no one noticed there is a thing called 'the media' and the 'internet' out there, and E's blog with a max of 1 thousand visitors is not even a drop in the proverbial.
If you don't like it then please move away from a large metropolitan area - maybe a shack in rural Montana might suit?
If people must argue about something to whittle away the day - can we please have a new subject?
Posted by: Ankors at January 30, 2006 05:01 PMThe NYT has corrected the spelling of haole in the surfing article referenced above. Coincidence? I think not. Feel the power of niceness.org.
Posted by: steve at January 30, 2006 05:03 PMI'm sure many people flagged the spelling. It was kind of a haoler (heh heh). But actually the spelling "howlie" is sometimes used.

Posted by: we have it sooooo good here at January 30, 2006 05:27 PMI'm way valley, born and raised...4 generations now.
Grandparents farmed the valley, now I can hardly buy a house here.
Surfed Cowell's (oops, I named) on Sunday afternoon with about 100 close friends. So much fun surfing with 5 friends on the same wave. Ratboy was out raising a ruckus, he grew up surfing there...
Posted by: geno at January 30, 2006 05:30 PME it is truly saddening to see you editing out posts of pictures due to pressure from a few halfwit internet bullies.
What the hell is this - China? I thought the internet was all about free speech and free expression?
I have to say I think you are on a slippery slope if you are going to start editing out people's opinions and posts (and pictures).
I paddled out yesterday evening at sloat and saw 3 other people the entire time on the whole south section of the beach. And yet if I am to post a pic here of that session - someone has somehow convinced you that is going to contribute to 'overcrowding'.
what utter madness - and a sad state of affairs.
Posted by: ankors at January 30, 2006 05:32 PMbrian rules. but hey brian, dont smoke fuckin cigarettes!
Posted by: parental bagel at January 30, 2006 05:44 PMBrian- don't f*ck around too much, better be in college in the next couple years or Uncle Sam is going to draft your ass. You want to be in Iraq or Iran looking for roadside bombs and dodging suicide bombers? No, you don't. Lose a leg, get brain damage, go crazy from what you saw?

Posted by: at January 30, 2006 05:51 PMI'm straight out of Sacto - does that make me a val?
hey, lay off e. he surfs deadman's sometimes, if people keep putting pictures of it on his website, his wave count will likely suffer and he might even lose a fin or get his windows waxed.
start your own website for exposing local waves (like Chuck Lantz) if you think the world needs it.
Posted by: concerned reader at January 30, 2006 05:52 PMwhatever..but props to you e for putting yourself out there to be scrutiniezed by every bozo with a board from here to aleburque..

Posted by: sactomex at January 30, 2006 05:54 PMI'm straight out of Sacto - does that make me a val?
Oh no, not waxing his windshield...
The horror!
Last week we discussed, like civilized human beans, Mexi's rainy windshield FP surf photo.
This week, when bagel posts pics that are only identifiable by the contour of 3 rocks, people go nuts.
The difference? Today Carrillo is whining like a two year old. Last week he had baby duty when we were discussing Mexi's photo.
And really, what is the difference between bagel posting 3 several day old pics, and Chuck Lantz posting 50,000 several day old pics....
49,997 pics, that's the difference. And Chuck has a much nicer camera (no offense intended bagel)
Posted by: blakestah at January 30, 2006 06:00 PMe, You rule at footbag!!!!
Posted by: sd rider at January 30, 2006 06:01 PMAlso, Bob poses and pimps himself through Chuck's pics. If bagel had posted a pic of Bob at Fort Point, you can bet there would be no controversy...
You see, its totally cool to have pics of Bob Carrillo at FP, but a violation of etiquette to have them of anyone else.
Come to think of it, no one whined loudly at the Chuck pics that were transposed here last week from FP, either. No one threatened e for not being a local, or for not respecting locals.
It is all about bvb, and his "posse" of imaginary friends.
Posted by: blakestah at January 30, 2006 06:02 PMI'm thinking about having a walk-a-thon to raise money for brian to get a new wetsuit.Anybody in?
Posted by: at January 30, 2006 06:10 PMyeah im doing my homework and shit. Im not down for the army, id hella go to canada. What do you guys think about bailing out of Uncle Sam? I would probably want to go to Mexico and surf because I love mexico. I am acually going there on the 11th of February to Troncones to surf. Im excited!
Posted by: Brian at January 30, 2006 06:17 PMi got money for a new wetsuit, im gonna buy one tomorrow :D
Posted by: Brian at January 30, 2006 06:17 PMhey my only point is, e can decide or not whether to allow deadmans pics on his site, because its his site. I guess if he knuckles under too hard to agnes and her posse, then his non-immatureangrydickweed readership may dwindle. on the other hand, if he really gets hassled, then its his choice whether to bear it or not.
Posted by: concerned reader at January 30, 2006 06:20 PMHow about a surf-FP-a-thon?

People think I'm crazy with the sea. Things boys have changed. There sure are more people surfing here - saw some kid who looked like you with all the zits do an airel right near the pier piling. talk about an internet bully. but he draws the line at surf cams and vehemently opposes those and tosses surpulse and surfline under "the preverbial"
what a rapist. can't wait to hear all about his next session when he show's up and crashes at friend#1's house, they'll stay up all night discussing their entitlement and how everyone else has it wrong and what publicity hound bvb is.
So today I got this deep barrel at Wawona St.

Posted by: Cankors at January 30, 2006 07:22 PMHey D.A.D. Im sorry to say that I don't really believe in god, im not white trash, my father doesn't beat me, and im not going to the army. But i will get a good edcuation and catch a lot of waves. Perhaps my false father will take me to alaska again (review the old photos at www.webshots.com/dreamtheater045). My false dad grew up in lake county, and he can drink a case of beer in one day. But he also built a 2 million dollar house in Bodega Bay which we live in. He also is one of the most successful tree associated businessmen north of SF. I am sure proud of him. I disapointed him tonight with reciving a bad report card, but I won't let him down. So D.A.D.
