Cool art - I wish I was in one of those locations today

Posted by: Walker at March 10, 2006 09:34 AM

Nice art, especially # 4.

Am packing for Baha right now-hopefully score some surf! Have to work a full weekend of night shifts before though.

Aaaand-will be moving back to SF in July! Scored a couple of part time jobs, so now it's definite. If anybody hears of a nice 1 bdrm opening up in July/August pm me. Can't wait to be back!

I'd like the second painting better if there wasn't a huge crucifix on the hill top. It strikes an off note for me personally. Not to disrespect those who surf for Jesus, but I prefer the secular approach to waves.

Posted by: Lance Mountain at March 10, 2006 12:08 PM

Oh no, can't go against the party line. Everything I say is heavily regulated by those with a vested interest in being niceness for the sake of niceness. E handles criticism these days and we like him more for it. Who are we?
I think it's pretty cool anyway that we went in a became the cataylst for a civil war in Iraq and that in the end they would eat themsleves. Don't be fooled. For a comparison its like the US Army plan eradicating Native Americans from their ancestral home lands. Divide and conquer! Beat the drum. War is cool. Next up Iran - woopsie. But hey, fuck all that - go surfing.

Posted by: curious at March 10, 2006 12:33 PM

I like surfing that spot even though the hill has a cross on it. The cross was placed there years and years ago for sailors lost in a shipwreck. The spot is totally non denominational but leaves its victims screaming "Oh God" and thinking "God I hope that isn't a shark". On father's day 2003 I thought I'd been raptured up when I checked the surf under that cross.

I encountered a bit of BVB-style localism a while back. Manor, offshore, head-high. Paddled out to the nice left, one older guy already out there. He gave me stink-eye then started up about people with cellphones filling up the breaks, non-locals, where can a guy get a wave etc. Really went off. I let him finish, then pointed at the apartements right over us, said which one was mine, told him I'd watched him for 3/4 of an hour without paddling out, to give him some space, but with a wind swing due it was my time. Asked him if he'd driven here. Yep, he had.

In a two week period, would you rather work 5 days a week, 8 hrs a day, or 9 hours a day with 5 days one week and 4 days the next?

I ask because I will soon be given a choice; by the way, the big boss is pushing for the 9 hr senario.

Posted by: at March 10, 2006 01:39 PM

I work the 9 hour days, 9 out of 10 days.

My observations:
In the winter you feel like you have no time after a 9hr work + 1hr lunch +0.5hr extra work + 1hr commute = 11.5hr day. I don't do anything. In the summer its not that bad.

Working overtime is pretty tough, you're real spent by the end of the day.

I find that the boss has me work about 1/2 of the days I'm supposed to have off, but I can bank them. But two 45+ weeks in a row can be rough

Three day weekends are great.

Swap your day off for two long dps.

Most 8 hour days your there 9 hours anyway.

All in all, work sucks no matter how you slice it up!

Going up to Tahoe in a few weeks from SoCal. Anybody familiar with Northstar and Alpine? Best runs? I've been to Kirkwood, Squaw, and Sierra a few times and would like to return to Kirkwood but I'm out numbered as to where to go.
Thanks

Posted by: junglebook at March 10, 2006 02:59 PM

I was just at Alpine. It is great and I think the lift tickets are cheaper than Northstar. Take the Scott lift to the backside for more elbow room what should be waist deep powder right about now.

Posted by: at March 10, 2006 03:13 PM

kloo, skateboarding is a great cross training activity. i don't skate the parks as much as i surf them. loose trucks are your friend. send me an email at three2fivesetsof7@yahoo.com and i'll let you know next time i hit P-town. sunnyvale is the best park to hit to get back into it as they have a large flow area.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at March 10, 2006 03:13 PM

I used to do the 9x9 thing at work and liked it a lot. If you like getting away for the weekend it's a godsend.

Posted by: R3W at March 10, 2006 03:15 PM

Kloo- Best is to just do it. Hit the skatepark for dp, while most of the kids are getting ready for school. Won't work in summer, of course. Skate park might not be a good idea right now, with all the rain.

Junglebook - Northstar, or "Flatstar" as it is otherwise known, is a mostly a groomed blue run resort. Good for families and kinda near truckee. I haven't been to Alpine in years, so I'm not sure what's going on there. Kirkwood is definitely one of my favorites.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at March 10, 2006 03:56 PM

Ya alpine is way better than northstar in my opinion but it depends on what you're looking for. alpine has some great steeps and there are some places were snow lasts a while, some fun trees, etc. their park / halfpipe aren't as good as some places if that's your thing but they've been getting better last couple of years too. the tickets are like $39 which is about $20 less than squaw. i never go to northstar, heard good things about tree runs & the park there, bad things about mcFamilys all over the place and its squaw like pricing. on a related note, i heard Mt rose opened up some new terrain that is supposed to be ridiculous, anyone with first hand knowledge?

Posted by: Fergus at March 10, 2006 04:27 PM

Posted by: kloo at March 10, 2006 04:29 PM

Alpine, hell ya... the munchkins are do or die sick. Good luck finding them, bring a rope... you've been warned and it ain't my fault if you die.

New terrain @ rose are the old avy chutes you can see from the road that used to be off limits, although everyone used to ski em under the full moon.

For what its worth I surfed VVFWF's stoned as fuck from 2:45 to 3:30pm. I got into the waves ok but found myself beyond the impact zone a tad too far outside chasing and avoiding the warbled side-shore behemouth bombs. So I cheated my way back south a bit to the point where I was exausted. Paddle paddle - dodge duck dive dodge paddle. All for 1 visciuos wave. Made the drop - faded like I'm at Sunset and then the bottom which by this time was now ripping 20 feet to the north of me dropped out and up I went into the air, board body everything airborne! I came up splattered - the kind of wipeout where I could taste last weeks dinner of cheese macaroni and ham. My board was buckled in two places.
I get to the car and the Park Police are waiting for me with a ticket for expired tags. Nutso to Niceness.

Hey "montera" rules guy - first, learn to spell the name of the town you're calling home. Second, if you do live in Montara, it's definitely a different Montara than the one I've been living in for the last 15 years. 80 days a year? I check it about 350 days a year, and find that it's only decent about 10 of 'em. I guess you could probably scratch out another 30 if you're really trying. There's always something wrong - too big, too windy, too high tide, too low tide, etc. Why force it when there are waves within a 15 minute drive one way or the other?

hi photo link poster, sweet dreams

Posted by: bajel at March 10, 2006 09:50 PM

I asked myself the same question, is it "God", or "Good?" The answer is, who cares. Aughh Goooooooood. Friday, many Pacifico's and a fat ass meal later I write the originals,a little saucy. Erica is sniffing the chicken soup, though we had an amazing home brewed shrimp dinner with white wine, turning me into a wino, and now I'm a pacificio. Do you guys drink that beer? It's the greatest. There's so much to tell you guys, and to hear from y'all. I'm am so psyched for Keith's wedding, I can't wait to fucking be a civilized savage with you guys. Way to go Keith, that's exactly how I want to start off my summer. "Another glorious day in the corps, every meal a banquet, every paycheck a fortune." I'm wearing a wife beater with it pulled up and my new gut hanging out, drinking a beer, and it's absolutely glorious. It hailed today, but I had some windows supported over my lettuce and cucumber crops so they're unscathed so far. I'm building a new vegetable bed where I think I' gonna do the garlic and potato crops. The APOCALYPSE is coming! I'm seriously considering getting chickens...as Tom suggested we need some big names, like General Alexander, Sir Cluck of Galahan, etc. Ok, don't ask me where this is going, 'cause I'm not far gone, but I plan on going far. Seriously though, I saw something on a web site today that made me laugh: it was a picture of a guy standing next to a cop car, hanging brain and drinking a beer, he was totally casual and just there, and I thought of all of your nutsacks, and I got all LTE, no I didn't really, but I thought of you guys, and how you guys might appreciate it. But one funny thing happened today, was that Erica brought home all the groceries, like five bags, and I went and helped her bring them in, and while she was bringing a few more bags in, I went straight for the beer and put it in the fridge, and then went upstairs. She of course pointed this out, and all I could do was laugh, 'cause that's a little funny. A kitchen full of groceries, but the beers are chillin' in the fridge. Ok,I'm gonna roll, just thought I'd drop you guys a line, and tell you, each and every one of you blokes that I think you guys are great, and that, "you got an ass that won't quit, hey pass the beer nuts." Ok, though, see you guys soon, and if you take yourself lightly, allow me to.
Love,
G-Spot
