wake up call

Wake up to the distant boom of crashing waves.
The villagers predicted the full moon would bring more swell.
Years watching buoy readings and reading blakestah.com engender a healthy skepticism toward the moon-swell causation.. but.. the sound doesn't lie.
The swell is up!
The moon is full.
Magic in the air.
You're a good 40 minute walk to the reef and it's still dark.
Chickens squawk and pigs grunt underneath the raised slat floor of the small thatched-roofed hut you and the Kiwi have been inhabiting these last few weeks.
This pig's name is Meta and your hosts claim he will be dinner in another week's time.
You rouse the Kiwi and tell him to listen.
He hears the tell-tale aquatic thunder and the two of you are out the door.
Grab board, rashy and leash.
Apply wax and sunscreen.
Begin trotting down the path.
Past the village and into the jungle.
Monkeys chatter and call from above.
Strange, colorful crabs dance out of the way.
Pick your way down a steep hillside.
Use exposed roots for hand-holds.
Whistle the whole time to warn would-be snakes of your approach.
The story goes that a surfer was bitten and killed here by a snake the year before, on this very trail.
Get to the bottom of the hillside where a small opening in the trees reveals a view of the wave.
HOLY MOTHER OF!!
A double-overhead set marches down the reef.
Parading majestically in symmetric perfection.
A week and a half of near flatness and now it's firing.
Now you're running full tilt.
Over the creek.
Passed the spider web area.
Along the little dirt trails that encircle the rice paddies.
Say hi to an early morning farmer.
Down to the beach.
Farking sprinting like frothing dogs along the beach.
Sand fleas biting but who gives a shit.
Finally make it to the entry spot.
Nobody around.
Pretty much guaranteed that nobody else will show up since you and the Kiwi are the only ones in the village.
There are no other villages around.
No surf charter boats in these waters.
No local surfers.
Just you and the Kiwi.
Paddle out and your stomach jumps into your throat.
It's fucking going richter.
Barrels!
Big ones!
Crack and smash and get serious right in front of your face as you paddle around to the takeoff spot.
Umm...
The set ends and it goes flat.
The two of you set up a bit wider than you think necessary.
No rush.
Ease your way into it.
Shoot the shit for a second...
Then the blips on the horizon.
The first wave approaches.
Collects at the head of the reef.
Builds... builds.. then...
Buckles and throws out this thick beastly lip.
Rifles down the line.
CRACK!! CCCRACK!!! BLAM!!! CLACK!
Don't take that first wave.
wait... wait..
But the second wave is just immaculate.
You're going.
A few paddles and the thing is more powerful than any wave you've felt in months.. years maybe.
Thick and mighty and reverential.
It steepens and sucks up and you're paddling like mad to get in.
Then you're in.
Up.
Looonnnnnnng assssssss droooppp.
Board-chattering bottom turn.
Then post yourself up for the view of views.
Extra long, meaty, tapering tropical blue wall of antarctic groundswell splayed out in front of you.

airs but some nasty pipe and backdoor. the
beyond late drop steering with the inside thigh/
inside cheek tuck the barrel and hit the gas is
farking amazing. bruce demo'd that move over

Kaiser - friend #1...I saw your posts last night about Coastside Medical and had a totally opposite experience there than both of you. Maybe we're talking about different places - the place I'm referring to is on the hill in M*** B***h.

I had almost the exact kind of accident (fin to the foot) that friend #1 described about 7 yrs ago at a beach break down in that area and found the people there extremely nice and professional - with good senses of humor to boot. It wasn't crowded - not like going to the warzone that is any city emergency room. Living in the area at the time, I was glad to know that the place was located so close in case I really messed myself up. I've spent my share of time in ER's and got a totally fresh vibe from the folks up there.

Posted by: Q at March 31, 2006 10:59 AM

I'll agree with Q. Got stitched up on the hill over the jetty several years ago, after taking someone else's board to the head. 12 stitches later, I'll give the place 2 thumbs up. I even got stitched in my suit...

for what it is worth...no surf in almost 2 weeks, back is on the mend hopefully (accupunture, doc visit, and rest) and I'm hoping for some water time soon. Only been tourtured a few times by the view

Anyway Mike D from the beastie boys walks in and he's all, "What's up now Bitches!" I'm a bit of a yammerer myself and was getting pretty drunk. An hour later i was in the hot tub with 4 or 5 of these chicks and Mike D wearing these gigantic sunglasses. Then all the girls started making out with each other and us. Jingoism is for shame, no matter the country of origin. Pride, our undoing, a divisive isolator and ruiner. Those with the maddest pride have the most to lose, and promote a queasy paranoia among their own people, the ones they supopsedly love the most.

Ocean remains for all. No one can claim her. We surf waves of ultimate freedom -- a roaming, passport-less, nationless vastness. Our liquid home could never be undermined.

I'm down with real immigration reform... If there were no jobs, people wouldn't come. Reform starts from the top. Make felons of those who hire and buy the goods those on top produce. Why make criminals of the people on the bottom. Why send the jobs to Mexico? Why pollute the third world? These laws aren't intended to keep Mexicans out, they are meant to keep Mexicans down.. Wake UP!!

Posted by: Norcheco at March 31, 2006 01:17 PM

You wanna make some changes? Contact your Senators and tell them that you wont vote for them anymore if they dont make this shit work.
and then, HAVE SOME BALLS and vote for 3rd party candidate that will make real reform.

If you think our Democratic Senators (two very wealthy jewish women) are gonna be changing anything in your favor, then have a look at their track record.

They still get all the black and mexi votes though... and the blacks and mexi's still blame all the problems on the republicans.

This protest march/riot bullshit is pathetic. solves nothing as history has shown. (rodney king riots, watts riots, walmart riots, etc.)

You need to mobilize La Raza to protest the Senators, not burn US flags out on the freeway.

It is easy to rally/protest/riot in the streets and it gets the masses all fired up but usually solves nothing. The funny thing is, if they are doing it during the day, midweek, it shows that a lot of them actually dont have jobs.

For all you ignoramuses out there the entire Southwest was once Mexico blah blah blah. Reading these comments I can see that most of you lack a proper historical perspective. You are from the east or the south or the extreme north and you seemsimply do not posess an educated opinion regarding the matter. We are not something your used to. You think "illegal aliens" tacos, beans, rice, the Mission District and East Los.
Have any of you been to Mexico? Your stereotypes are very far removed from the educated classes both here in the north and in the south. As a people we have made incredible gains upholding our traditions and our heritage. We are not you and we don't want to be you - no problem. Remember your place while visiting Tahiti, Hawaii, Mexico, Central America.

Well, obviously since there's little surf to be had, and since it's raining buckets for weeks on end, and since people are bored and have started baiting others into political bloguments, today's niceness sucks...

Here's my suggestion E. Like a lot of open, unregulated forums (e.g. fuckedcompany.com) niceness has slipped lately into ridiculous, off topic posts, including threats, semi-racist rants, and the all too common "namers get owned" claims.

So why not have a moderator? Or even 3 or 4 moderators, and some ground rules?

Lots of other forums/blogs use moderators. It typically increases user's experience and lets people share more info, not less.

My two cents.

P.S. In the case of the old "they're waving the Mexican flag!" bait, I'd just suggest that whomever this bothers to please stay consistent: i.e. forget about any of your heritage too, just erase it from your memory and don't ever attend another event, religious or cultural, that might dare to celebrate your or your ancestor's begginings. Or, maybe that already describes you??

Posted by: Surfseeker7 at March 31, 2006 03:29 PM

realidad,
china is a totally different place than it was 17 years ago you ignoramus. in china change will come slowly, but the leaps have been huge over the last seventeen years. its practically a free market economy and the leading party in China - The Communist party. A little change of philosophy maybe?

Emancipation proclamation 1863
Brow vs. Board of Ed, Civil Rights Act 1954-1964

Sometimes change is slow. Don't dismiss the actions of those who plant the seeds of revolution when all odds are against them. They are heros and should and are celebrated as such.

moderators?
why have any posts at all? or do you just want all of the posts that you approve?
you never moderated one single hateful post when it was leveled at anyone that wasn't on your gay boat trip so why start now?

Three rips to the wind and a beer bitter end to YET another very disappointingly constitutionally ill "niceness" day. Your Mother O is heavily distraught; she laments deeply the language of the rebuttal today. Which was? You. Those people. Who are they? Meet Stan. Stew, Stan's mentally challenged brother say's, "History Smishtory," and Stan agrees.
My greater self is better than this. Far better. Removed even. But superegodrivenselfishness at this hour gets the best of and is stronger than the "real" me. Fuck. FUCK$%#^G*$%^((&^%! fuckFUKKK KKK K!
Thought it was over. Thought we could ALL move on. All "get along." Wrong. Nice society ASSHOLES. 60 years since Vietnam and Civil Rights and now this. Niceness fights the good fight. I believe in E's heart. God sends whispers to this kid from the East. Listen and read closely lads. Yet he himself stirs the Indians to slaughter with his boiling couldron of a website surfing OB blog. The white natives of the Good and Sacred Order of Brotherly Men (California Chapter) , [thank you] wait. Shaking their heads in the whirl of the disaster to come as it was fortold by Chief Sequoia. They are our partners and have taken sides. Necessary precautions.
To order. Feretting out those desicrating the scared Mother O has been of late an arduous task of back-checking, heavily patterned foot work, taking names, asking questions, observing behavioral patterns, googling nik-names checking websites. Endless . We are the fact finders. There are a few things the statistitions here could help us with but probably won't for fear of only Mother O knows.
Check your heads at the door lead with the penis and be gone. The wrath is upon us. Be smart. Know who your friends are and aren't. Trust the Brotherhood and don't cross the O. Have at it. Play nice.

moderating works when you have good moderators, but i've been on boards where the censorship just doesn't have any rhyme or reason. Creating login accounts would take the spontaneity out of the blog too, but, it might be worth a shot. I think the best solution is to weed all of these guys out for awhile. Just censor the hell out of the trolls and morons, create a registration system, and wait several months till all the dumbasses tire of it and go away. Then revert back to the old niceness. I think that should work.

Posted by: at April 1, 2006 06:14 PM

If someone is going to censor this blog, get rid of the typical arguments from the far right and left. Yes, immigration is out of control. No, don't get rid of immigrants. Anyone have a fresh idea? The typical stuff is soooo boring.

Highway 1 near Devil's Slide closed indefinitely
- Chronicle Staff Report
Sunday, April 2, 2006

The California Highway Patrol shut down Highway 1 near Devil's Slide indefinitely Sunday afternoon after a small sink hole was spotted in the roadway.

The ongoing rains may have caused a mudslide under the coastal highway between Pacifica and Montara, according to CHP Sgt. Wayne Ziese.

"It looks like all the rains we've had for the last 40 days and 40 nights is starting to take its toll,'' said Ziese. "That's a notorious area for mudslides."

Caltrans workers will inspect the roadway Monday to determine when it can reopen.

"Hopefully this will be something that can be repaired quickly,'' Ziese said.

moderation can be easy. Use this simple rules.
"no personal attacks"

You'd be amazed how rapidly that will clean things up. Make it dern civil, without infringing the rights to express ideas other than that so-and-so is an arsehole.

You'll need a username/login system because otherwise people being censored will come at it WAY too fast. With a username/login system you can ban people for an hour, or a day, or force moderation before their posts go up (instead of having to take them down), etc.

Of course, no moderation comes without cost in human time.
