Posted by: down is up at April 11, 2006 10:50 AMSaw sharkbait paddle out yesterday in semiridable conditions, as I discussed it with a neighbor. I had attended an appointment in a neighboring county so had missed my local opportunity (translations: I got skunked looking at a site more favourable to the local conditions and was now late for work).
We both agreed that Sharkbait and her companion had not chosen the ideal launch point.
Still, I bet they had more fun than me, and they wasted less gas.

Posted by: niceness meanness regulators at April 11, 2006 11:01 AMI don't get the interest with waves that ledge and keeps ledging, like Shipsterns. I think waves like that are crap compared to something like Chopes.
Posted by: at April 11, 2006 11:08 AMbut have you ever been in the pocket of a ledging wave like that? (smaller scale of course) its a big addicting rush. love the psycho ledges.

Posted by: at April 11, 2006 11:47 AMso is this place about surfing? or surfers? Surf Conditions? OB? OB Locals? Trannies? just niceness? whats the angle here? Do any of you even know?
Posted by: category control freak at April 11, 2006 11:49 AMFriend #1 is correct. That is a dumbass place to paddle out. However it's closer to my favorite little random corner , and sometimes with a lot of zigzagging and luck, I've ended up right where I wanted to be instead of getting in a block n or s and. Or, like yesterday, one can be blindly optimistic and get stomped. Not as fun as taking the raffle fish out for the first time, FINALLY. Odd new feeling, not unlike paddling around on a giant dinner plate. Only stepped off the back, like, 100 times...but finagled a ride. Stoked. Great board. Shoutout to that shaper..I hope he knows its going to be paddled about maybe 1000 times this summer. To hell with this "work" thing.
No APE because I had nothing new to show and was too lazy to walk around. Oh, but e, there is some old stuff in a new Dark Horse anthology, so email if interested in that.
Maddeningly offshore yet junky out there this morning. No surf for me, but that's more work related than anything else. Farking dark and stormy looking.
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at April 11, 2006 11:54 AMaa i was wondering if you were around ss. congrats on the dark horse anthology, sweet.

I really enjoyed your semi-autobiographical fantasy musings on this mornings post. Good luck in making it happen. Save a spot for a first class raconteur and amateur chef who gets paid to sew up reef cuts and relocate dislocated shoulders but will gladly do it for free to be part of a wave searching sea adventure.....peace
Posted by: antman at April 11, 2006 01:25 PMOh yeah I'm going to Zihautenejo with my lady so its not a primary surf trip but I still am going to bring a board. Was there 6 years ago and stayed on the beach in rustic conditions in front a mellow consistent and suprisingly crowded well known left point north of town. Any other suggestions regarding surf food or lodging from anyone? With my jinx mojo my departure will bring sunny skies and offshore winds to norcal while a freak icestorm hits the Mexican riviera!

Posted by: The original NY massive at April 11, 2006 01:44 PMsharkbait, good on ya for paddling out-that's too funny that you stepped off the back of the fish. Will have to borrow it once to check that out- have never ridden a fish.
Posted by: welle at April 11, 2006 01:45 PMHad a similar experience in Baha-rode a 9' board for the first time in years, could not stop from digging the nose into the water at every takeoff. Finally gave up-better to sit on a small board and not catch any of the teensy waves than to swim while your board does the surfing after you somersaulted off.
Has it finally stopped raining?
It's pouring out, Welle.
When ya coming back to SF. We ever gonna have our date?

Posted by: bitches! at April 11, 2006 01:48 PMe's Mo' Money dreamin'...all of us mo' wave schemin'....
Surf was decent enough yesterday afternoon, dropping tide, some OH sets. The sandbar forms aren't all that bad at "a beach" near "a city", surprisingly. A bit of churn&burn on the inside if you paddled out at the wrong time, saw some dudes getting hemmed in pretty good when the 4ft/17sec sets would roll in. The foam with rainbow-tinted bubbles, however, gave us some pause. Rainbow in sky = good; ducking thry rainbow-tinted poo bubbles = bad. Full biohazard scrub down apres-ses.
Ledgy, vert wave faces are sweet (like that photo e posted today). I feel a rush when staring down a long, tall wall, your commitment is decided in a millisecond and you start to track into the face even as you get to your feet. The kind of speed you generate on the ledgiest walls -- it's almost like flying. Especially when you get tossed over the falls on the late drops, hunting waves that are hunting youin return.
