Years ago, on a hike-in camping trip in el norte, surfboards under arm, dreams of isolated point breaks rifling through our minds, no one around, coastal forest, following the trail out to the sea.

All of a sudden, ROAR, a four wheeler ATV catches up to us. The driver looks concerned at finding us initially, and he is heavily armed. But, then, he sees the surfboard. We notice bales of ganja on the back. He speaks first, and boy are we nervous at his militant semi.

"You guys headed out for a little surf?"

"Yeah, we're headed up to ****** creek"

"Hop on, I'll give you a lift"

He intrisically trusted us. Gave us a 2 mile ride up to our camping spot. Dropped us off and offered us a little weed for silence. But we had plenty already. He came back around sunset that night, and brought a jay to share with us.

Over the next week, we bumped into him many times. Big private operation in the north woods. Just like ours, but different. He was a little lonely, liked to hang out for a little while at the end of the day. We felt a little guilty at invading his little private area, but relieved that he trusted us and befriended us. A feeling of similarity in goals. He's probably still there, but I've moved on.

i like it best when slates doesn't fall when he should. i just don't understand how he holds on. i also don't understand how all of them get past all that foam, i get just a little bit behind the wave and it's over. i was surprised to see that he actually did fall down a few times in the final and in the semis. anywho, that was fun, now what?

is it lerm who opened up "grommet surf?" any plans to make t-s for the baby grommets?

i surfed before work. It was slightly blown out but still small and fun. Kind-of a mildly hacked-up version of yesterday morning's excellence. No signs of the incoming swell during the hour i was out. Crumbly, peaky windswell. Nobody around. Biggest waves maybe head-high. Most waves shoulder high. Marginal but doable. Not much consequence and an easy paddle-out.

on my way in as i walked over the dunes this hippy guy said hi and showed me the "art" he was making on the beach (shells collected in a pattern). He told me "Happy 4/20!" Pretty classic.

yesterday was excellent

Nice surfing before work the last few days. 4/20 is funny.

Can anyone out their give me a straight answer on going to El Salvador on one of those surf guide tours??

I've never been one to go on guided tours but a few buddies are already in and well I would like to go.

Looks like it's getting bigger on the cams already. The swell looks junky , though. I would head south.

The El Salvador guide thing worked ok for me. I have NEVER used guides but went to K-38 and they just dialed us in. Not sure about the other operators. Make sure to go to Lips in San Salvador.

Motorcyclist Killed, Driver Charged

SUFFIELD -- A Hartford man has been charged in the death of a Canton man who was killed during a collision just before 7 a.m. today.

Gary Thorenson, 47, was driving a motorcycle west on Mountain Road near Hill Street when he was struck by a car driven by Luis Perez-Lopez, according to police.

Perez-Lopez, 23, was traveling east on Mountain Road, when he made a left turn onto Hill Street in front of Thorenson, striking Thorenson's motorcycle and trapping him under the car.

A Suffield police officer and several bystanders pulled the vehicle off Thorenson, who was then flown by Life Star to Hartford Hospital. He died at the hospital.

Police arrested Perez-Lopez and have charged him with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, failure to maintain minimum liablity insurance, failure to grant right of way when making a left turn, operating a motor vehicle without a license and having a device obstructing the windshield.

He is expected to be arraigned in Superior Court in Enfield later today.

Yup, gettin' psyched - leavin' tomorrow for my Cabo trip.

I've done the mexico city to puerto route and it sucked, but I figured it was the fastest way.

Mid day report.

Boring.

Drove home for lunch. One dude was heading out with a tandem board and a paddle.

Decided that it was ridable but not worth it.

Smoked an empty bowl as a symbolic gesture to the date.

Made a sandwich, drank a couple brews and watched Celebrity Poker Showdown.

When I headed back to work, Paddle dude had left.

I think I made the right call.

throw some fans and they better be damned good ones too. you dont want me all riled up.

that guy on the paddle board has been about alot lately. Saw him at FP then OB. He paddled out at OB on a good sized day.

I saw him getting destroyed in the shore pound as I went out. God knows how long he'd been there. Then about 45 mins later, I'd completely forgotten about him and he came paddling through the line up!

Don't think he as keen to take any waves tho after that beating- just paddled off into the distance.

I want to thank whoever posted a back pain tip a few weeks ago. Mentioned the book "Mind over back pain" by John Sarno. Amazing as it sounds, just by reading a book I've been pain free for over 2 weeks. Before that I spent most of the day and night in pain and was popping advil like candy for the last 5 years.
Anyone else out there has constant pain, check this book out, it's cheap.

At one, it looked like full on crap-ola.

Swell is coming in, but not too clean.

Sizewise: Overhead. When it is crumbling and hard onshore, size is not too relevent, frankly.

I had more fun watching Shannon Elizabeth's Ace ten beat Kathy Griffin's King ten.

Can you elaborate on that book and your experience?

I have alot of back issues (car smash long time ago, and years of general abuse)

thanks lerm. i think i will buy the xs shacked one and he can just wear it baggy until he grows into it. my favorite is the sick air, but you don't appear to have that in xs.
i'll look forward to the new sizes. let me know if you need any XXS models. we haven't put together his portfolio/look-book yet, but it is one of the next things on the agenda. we think he's pretty cute and he is definitely a shredder.

That was me with the book recommendation for back pain. I feel like an infomercial sometimes as I'm always telling people about it, but it worked for me. No surgeries, no big deal. I've applied what I learned in that book to other areas of my life with great affect (effect?) as well. Stoked it worked for you.

I had a similar experience with the book as well. The mind is very powerful.... Tried to recommend the book to my dad who is suffering from some fairly intense back pain with the ortho having no real diagnosis. he farted it off...couldn't quite wrap his mind around the idea that it could be something onther than a structural issue. maybe someday when he's desparate he'll read the book...new ideas are good!

Well Eric you've helped me out by recommending the book here.
I really liked one line later in it, something like "Most surgeries are actually placebos (!).. effective for a while but eventually the problem returns". It was the very prospect of surgery that prompted me to get the book (like $10 on Amazon), I've had a few nasty wee spinal hits over the years and have a majorly bulging disc (still buging and doesn't hurt at all now), and figured it was all related to that. But as he points out, how the hell can a bulging disc make so many other points of your back hurt? And how come back pain most effects folk in their 30's and 40's, tailing off markedly as we get older, when the doc's would have us believe that spinal degeneration is to blame? Where are all the old folk with terrible back pain?
Makes such sense when it's all put together in one place.
The weird part is that just reading it and then thinking about it without really doing anything physical fixes it. He must be right, that your subconscious just takes on your new understanding and no longer transfers daily stress into your back muscles.

If anyone else out there is having a real problem I can't recommend it enough. My life has improved hugely.

yeah that back pain book, howard stern's always talking about it. said it cured him too.

what cured my back issues and, incidentally, my knee issues, is the chiropractor mark riccabona. i know someone's going to lambast chiropractors in general, but what can i say, he healed me completely and talked me into avoiding surgery. and he tries to keep me out of his office, not one of those "come in for a weekly adjustment" guys. also gives you great perspective about how bad or not bad a given injury is.
