spooky fog

Eery fog horns bellow.
Lonely tones echo through misty sunset avenues.
A majestic eucalyptus flutters in the breeze, dripping dollops of water from its branches.
The beach a mystery.
Can't see it from 20 feet away.
Low tide exposed idiosyncratic sandbars.
Lerm and I wander down.
Wetsuits donned, site-unseen.
Get out to knee-deep water.
Waves looks near non-existent.
Backing off then diarrhea shorebreak.
Walk down the beach a bit.
Ghost-like aberrations out to sea.
Cloaked skeletons rise from the briny mist.
Creepy whale-songs shudder through the firmament.
But.. oooh.. look at that peak out there!
Ten minutes later we're into the sesh.
Lerm snags a left and slops a turn off the top.
I grab a right and ride down the line.
Nothing fancy.
Glassy drops and blips and squeeks.
Some momentary tubes go unridden by us.
Algae-strewn pirate ships creep from the deep.
One-eyed ravens hover overhead.
Red-eyed rats scurry on shore.
Bird-feathers float in mass.
Cycloptic sea-lions bark and growl.
Fog eels slip and sting.
Everything that lives, dies.

I remember once upon a day paddling out into the fog not knowing what to expect. Once outside I was rewarded with overhead clean waves. Sometimes not knowing is half the fun.

Fog? What fog? Ah for a little tropical bliss.
A good friend sent me the above snapshot from his Casa de Centro America.
Great words again E.

Love that creeping dense fog, the little underpinning of isolation as the sense of direction dissolves into the misty edges. Then suddenly -- huzzah, vas ist das? Voodoo ledges out of nowhere -- turn and burn, FOG SET!

Loved the last 7 lines of that post today, e. Sounds like the beginning of a story to be told around a beach bonfire.

That Occy turn up top is great. I would not even think about that if i was on that wave, i would be heading down the line so fucking fast.

My poor homemade Carnie Wilson fish(short, fat and ugly) got pretty beat up these last back to back souths. Had her in the water over 80+ sessions and never got a ding. Noticed that where I had the laps some water was bubbling up and a little crack down the lap was forming. Presumably where I step on the deck. Sucks, but I cut it out, will add some strength and she'll float her fat ugly ass again.

Don't look, you'll go blind.

Fun things about the blind paddle-out -

1) You get to play "where am I now? as you drift along. Especially fun if you're toward the north end and think you're drifting north.
2) With the right mindset, you can really spook yourself. Although it's probably more fun to spook your friend - "jeez, what was that?!"
3) You're safely hidden from the dudes who like to play "theres a guy by himself, let's paddle out next to him". So you just might score and have it to yourself.

Thinking about heading south to SLO or Big Sur area for the weekend. How packed with tourists do you all think it will be? Otherwise, I will stay put and do day trips instead.

I was thinking alot of people will be working on Monday so, Sunday/Monday may not be a bad option. On the bad side, there is no significant south swell being forecasted.

Surfer Passes Out While Surfing in Cardiff by the Sea and Gets Saved by Friend and Leash.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 June, 2006 : - - Experienced surfer, Anthony Stone (34) was surfing his third session of the day during a south west swell in north county San Diego 6/19/06 and passed out due to being exhausted from surfing an excessive amount in one day. When he passed out, he fell off his board and was underwater for three waves when a friend made it over to him and pulled him up by his leash.

The friend then had to carry him into shore, where he was met by lifeguards who quickly called in assistance and had him airlifted him to a local hospital. He spent two days in Intensive Care and is "ok". He still shaken up and is taking antibiotics to fight off the bacteria the water in his system might cause... He came as close as one can to not seeing the light of day... ever again. For more info, Anthony's brother set up a web site to monitor his current situation

Surfing is hard

That's a lot better way to go out than the fool who played video games for 48 hours straight and died of exhaustion surrounded by jars of his own piss.

8 million ways / death by surfing -- yes, please!

Haha.. r3w, nice list of reasons to paddle out in the fog.

tooshy, dunno if you'll be checking back here, but I don't think it should be too crowded as long as you stay away from Pismo. All the schools are out, so you only have to worry about locals, as everyone has gone home for summer by now.

hb, good job on the board salvage! You're right, that Occy pic is SICK.

Made it out for a little morning mayhem....just about a half hour in the waves before having to hop on BART for the 925.

Brian, where are you?
What's new?
Summer plans?
Waves?
Job?
Travel?
Gotten in trouble lately?
PSAT coming up?
Can't figure out the whole sign-in thing?
Come on dude, I'm in need of an inspirational i-scored-insane-waves-got-stoned-out-of-my-mind-went-hot-tubbing-and-screwed-the-propm-queen post.
