bigger... burly at the beach

Looks like winter out there. Large, bulbous mounds of juicy wave energy made their way into the beach this morning. Both the 3ft 17second south and the growing NW windswell were evident as waves broke on the outer sandbars. No takers within the 5 block radius of my house at around 7am. The onshores did their best to ruin an otherwise tempting situation. A few intriguing sections offered themselves but mostly it was crossed-up and disorderly at Ocean Beach. Biggest waves a few feet overhead.

You probably don’t have to drive too far to find acceptably decent, if not epic, conditions. Without blowing anyone’s secret, a drive north might pay dividends today, especially if you’re sick of the Santa Cruz element to the south.

Surf.

Thanks Dano, DM, Trippy and everyone else who offered advice or empathy in regard to my tight/injured back. I played some footbag this morning after walking to the beach and then did some mellow yoga while trying to focus on my breathing. Every day my back feels perceptibly better so I’m confident that I’ll be back in action within the month. It’s painful to miss surf now but it’ll be even more painful to miss out when it’s 3mph offshore breeze on Monday morning with a 4ft 12sec NW swell and nobody out at the local.

Not many peeps out this morning. In some pockets of SF the sun was out and it was beautiful this morning. In other parts of the city, cold, drery, foggy and spooky.

Surf was definitely looking the best at the northern most areas of OB and progressively worse as you headed south. The inverse for the surfing population as there were 7-8 heads out at the south end.

Didn't miss much if you slept in. Could still have fun if you are venturing out.

There you have it.

some sarge photos of Linda Mar this morning

Posted by: e at July 20, 2004 10:18 AM

Yeah. I made the drive last night. OB looked miserable. Pathetica was. Hoped for some action this am but the winds and the fog discouraged me. I need a break! Oh well. Gotta keep working out to prepare for good stuff coming...soon? I actually lost 15 pounds in the last couple months. Another 5 or 8 to go and I may be able to see ripples in my stomach instead of rolls. Damn, for a being skinny, wirey kid(long time ago)I sure got paunchy.

Posted by: Dennis at July 20, 2004 10:21 AM

Nabbed a few shots around 7-8 near the showers. I'll post tonight if they come out. Man, it was farking flippin' cold standing out there. The guys who paddled out demonstrated their committment to the cause. Me? I'm ready for our SF summer. . . you know, September.

Those photos disturbed me. I can't believe the beach erosion at Lindy.

Posted by: lerm at July 20, 2004 10:27 AM

yesterday was a good day to call in sick and head south. the eastside of SC was firing as were some usually shitty beachbreaks in san mateo county. it's always sketchy coming into work after a sick day with a suntan, luckily i have a minor sinus infection right now to make me sound a bit ill.

Posted by: bbr at July 20, 2004 10:29 AM

If you dont mind Fog, the is a sheltered spot out there with some action to be had. Marin & Sonoma County South spots are the definate call.

Ever since they started that beach renovation campaign down at Lindy the water line has been changing. I am sure those crusty ole' locals wanted the erosion to occur so the could control those mush burgers out there. Sad, sad, sad.

Nah, really, I think they are doing a good job down there to clean up the beach

-------------- RANT ---------------
Ok, so I surfed yesterday morning at a place that had no real beach. So, there were not bottles, cans, fire leftovers etc. and it was really clean. What is so special about this? Nothing.... However, at lunch, I ventured to the closest break to my office, Lindy. Across Highway 1, over the dunes, I was disgusted to see all the crap lining the beach. Complete reversal from surf spot to surf spot. Broken bottles, a 12-pack of Tecate w/ empties on the beach, shit all over the place. Possibly the worst I have ever seen the beach. I love the bonfire! Good times, drink some beer, pass the pipe, talk shop with your mates, all the good stuff.

Considering that non-surfing and maybe surfing folks litter up the beach all the time, can't something be done to help out? As effective as beach cleanups might be, it seems to only provide temporary relief. Can we not lobby our local political peeps for some fire rings and the like? How about an occasional patrol by our local law enforcement peeps to ticket people who leave shit all about the sand? How about raking the beach every few months. These things don't sound unreasonable do they? Look at the crap that is floating in the water next time you surf on a Saturday/Sunday/Monday.

I am not the most political minded person but the shit is out of control. Besides, why should someone have to wear booties merely for the walk from the parking lot to the water's edge?

THIEVES ARE OUT!!!!
Another warning for all you surfers out there. I was surfing G*** W**** C*** this morning, and when I got back to my shitty old truck, my locks were jimmied and someone stole my favorite pants, all my keys, and my wallet, and they have been cruising South SF this morning racking up charges. Take your keys with you, and only bring what's necessary... The hassle is not worth it once you lose everything you keep in your wallet.

Posted by: tallguy at July 20, 2004 11:24 AM

In Australia when I was visiting they used to rake the beaches constantly. Really beautiful arriving for an early session and stepping on to perfectly manicured sand. They seem to have it right over there, realizing that beaches are national treasures.

Posted by: at July 20, 2004 11:26 AM

that sucks tallguy!! ggrrrr!!!

who the fuck is stealing all this shit!!!

i think it's time to set up a sting.. for real!!

we need to start stockpiling all the info we have about surfer-car break-ins. then start performing some deductive reasoning.

these fuckers are going down.

soo.. we should scour the backlogs of E's report for info and stories and anyone out there who's been broken into or knows info post it up here.

once we have all the info gathered.. we'll parse through it for details and then i'll take whatever we have to the cops or maybe we'll set up multiple stings at multiple times.. each with camera (and baseball bat?)..

ideas?

Posted by: e at July 20, 2004 11:31 AM

That's pretty fucked up. Breaking into a car and stealing someone's pants. I wonder if they were wearing them when while they used the stolen credit cards. What parasites. Same with the idiots who curiously need to leave their empties and trash on the beach. Are people now being raised by dogs or what?

Posted by: cadaver at July 20, 2004 11:36 AM

Kaiser for president! It's time for a goofyfoot in the oval office.

Posted by: Bruce at July 20, 2004 11:41 AM

Need one nice car. 1 surfer, 3-4 brawlers (3-4 bats) one camera and one roll of duct tape.
Surfer drops brawlers off near parking lot and proceeds to dive to parking lot, park car and suit up. Fake keys are obviously hid under bumper or something. Surfer then takes board and goes to surf.
Brawlers hide in surrounding hills, grass, houses etc) and wait. As soon as someone tries to get into car, pictures should be taken as evidence then brawlers smack the SOB down. Thief is then taped up and delivered to police.
Note: Real keys should not be used in case thief starts car and tries to take it or run over brawlers.

Anyone know about the surf in the Tuamotu archipelago area: Rangiroa. Going to be there soon. Hoping for some insight.

Posted by: nolegrope at July 20, 2004 11:48 AM

We should sting it up. Cops don't have the time, funding or motivation to do this. Plus for every 3 cars broken into maybe 1 person reports it to John-law. It'd be tough to get people to devote the time to a vigilanti sting op but worth it. If we caught someone and made an "example" of them maybe it would get some press and deter theives.

Posted by: v70t5 at July 20, 2004 11:52 AM

my niceness observations of the past two weeks:
what's the nicenessest thing about surfing ob with thick fog and onshores? you can pretend your surfing alone even though there's twenty people around.
what's the nicenessest thing about surfing double-overhead waves at a juicy pointbreak in baja alone?
seeing that your friend/fellow surfer is getting ready to paddle out and join you.

Posted by: steamwand at July 20, 2004 11:54 AM

Posted by: redworm at July 20, 2004 11:56 AM

Kaiser for Supervisor - District 5.

My Platform:
- Bust up every fool stealin' stuff from cars at the beach.
- If caught, the guilty must perform 500 hours of community beach service including raking the beach, picking up trash and de-waxing my surfboard quiver.
- Rake the beach once a week.
- Install fire rings at all public beaches where fires are permitted.
- Increase Park/Police patrol at main public beaches.
- Increase ticketing of littering offenders, pet owners who don't clean up their pets' shit, people generally abusing the beach.
- All ticketing proceeds funneled back to beach clean-up/development/anti-erosion efforts.

Whatta think?

Sucks about the car crap. I seriously want to smack some of these fools down.

This is so cool!

I've always wanted to be a part of vigilante justice, but have never had an opportunity. Really looking forward to beating someone with a baseball bat. Can't wait to cross that off my "life goals" list.

Some suggestions for Traut's plan:

1) Let's get more brawlers. 5-7?
2) We should drink some hard liquor while we wait, to pass the time and get pumped. Anyone have any crystal meth they could spare?
3) It might take a lot of waiting for someone to actually try to break in... could we just pounce on the first person to walk near the car? This might be an easier way to get our message across.
4) Re: bats... Can we use some other stuff, too? Like maybe a couple guys bring machetes, num-chuks or malatov cocktails?
5) Read you loud and clear on the duct tape and apprehension. But before we turn our thief over to the police, could we maybe perform our own interrogation? Some ideas:

--strip them naked, put bag over head and make them stand on a box. Tell them they'll be electrocuted if they step off.
--use attack dogs to coerce admission of guilt. Anyone have a pit bull or german shepard? My friend has a daschund. He's a little undersized but he gets cranky if not fed for a few days.
--If we apprehend a number of thieves we could strip them naked and make a human pyramid. Maybe take pictures and post on E's site...

Anyway, just some thoughts on how we can help keep our credit card's safe and spread the niceness...

Peace out!

yea, I am pissed about the car thieves...it's only a matter of time before they try to get my car. I am motivated to go riding my bike around the beach just to get a chance at these mofos. I will clobber them!

Posted by: alien at July 20, 2004 12:10 PM

car thieves - duct tape them from their schlong from the lamp posts along the great highway, put a sign at the base of the post that says 'i got caught trying to break into cars". talk about an example.

re: trash at the beach, i surfed up north the 4th weekend and there was an assload of people on the beach lighting off fireworks, drinking, etc. however, the next morning the beach was SPOTLESS, the city actually had people that came out superextra early and cleaned the beach. was insane.

anyways, running to home depot now to get a case of duct tape...

FYI; If possible I would avoid parking in the Lindamar parking lot behind the water treatment building (I believe that is that buildings purpose) south of the taco bell. These are the spots closest to Highway 1 that are perpendicular to this little cement grey building. Seems thieves are partial to these spots given they are semi-secluded from view and somewhat off to the side. I've seen two cars broken into over the last 10 days that have parked in these spots. Seems a screwdriver into the lock is the preffered method of entry.

greetings to the activists out there today...

a day late or so but i wanted to post a niceness
thanks to e, ck and kaiser for the longboard skate
tips last friday. so jazzed all day. thanks. looking
forward to a surf with ya'll.

the beach has been eroding and wants to erode toward
a nice cresent shape (see old photos from sutro heights).
ever since the city pushed the sand off the dunes west to
build the outer most sunset houses, the beach has suffered.
then there is the road—fixed points on a moving substrate.
well that just ain't gonna work. [see nc 12 on the outer banks].
what we are seeing now is protection of the road at sloat and
the poop place. until "they" agree that the road has to move...
those are the breaks.

kaiser go for it....the goofy foot ticket.

peace.

new plan

1 shitty car, 1 surfer, 1 brawler, 0 bats, many 1$ bills scattered around interior of car, 1 can of gas, 1 roman candle.

$$ are scattered around interior of car. Gas is poured on and in car. Surfer suits up and goes to beach. Brawler hangs in house (preferable 2nd story along the GH) and drinks / smokes whatever he/she wants until thief is seen entering car. Roman Candle is lit and fired at car. Car and thief erupt in flames. Brawler makes one worded post (plus the address of the incident) on niceness using the regular coding : gohaekilgnitsaorsirekcufrehtom. Niceness peeps then come down to the scene with beer and we all hold hands, dance around the fire and sing kum-bi-ya or other niceness songs.

Before you dudes saddle up and start deputizin' I heartily recommend you check out two old movies. "Fury" (dir: Fritz Lang, 1936) and "The Ox-Bow Incident" (dir: William Wellman, 1943) Aside from being powerful film classics, they are eye-opening primers to the slippery slope of vigilantism and mob justice.

Posted by: cadaver at July 20, 2004 12:43 PM

I have been dreaming about the baseball bat justice all morning, followed maybe by the duct tape capture and 1/2 mile tow out to way way outside OB (maybe all the way to the potato patch) on a big day with a big tide swing with all the big rips in full effect. Then the release... The landlord likes theives too.
My locks were broken into with a screwdriver too, they broke one screw driver off in the passenger side lock, and apparently got in through the driver side lock with the spare screwdriver. Luckily, my key still worked in the lock, cause they tried to lock me out, and also luckily, some friends showed up who drove me home.

Posted by: tallguy at July 20, 2004 12:44 PM

oh man, vigilante justice is awesome..i dont know if they really use bats so much though, their more into big sticks i think. bats are so mainstream and easy to come by. roman candles and moltov cocktails though? sweet.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am drafting my own plan, which I am concurrently authorizing, for capturing and punishing the cowards committing these evil acts at our northern California coastal parking lots. I assure you that the blueprint I have for attacking this problem will make these parking lots safer and freer places to park your cars while getting wet.

Posted by: Donald Rumsfeld at July 20, 2004 01:25 PM

Environmental notes about clean beaches:
-Raking beaches takes with it organic material that certain beach dwelling oranisims use for shelter and food. Coming through with trucks will result in cleaner looking beaches, but can damage the ecosystem in the long run.
-Fire pits on OB have been suggested, but the dominant opinion is that with all the sand movement there, they will immediately be burried. FYI The SF Surfrider foundation is still pushing for novel ways to install fire pits: maybe having fire ring dig out sessions instead of, or in addition to clean ups. Any other ideas?

I'm down for whatever needs to be done to stop the thievery. They stole my completed card for a free wrap at Blue Front! That's just wrong.

"Anyway, just some thoughts on how we can help keep our credit card's safe and spread the niceness..." - lewis

My favorite post on the topic. I think I'm finally catching on to lewis' sense of humor.

I was hoping to get a couple at Ocean Beach yesterday, but by the time I got out there it was blown to bits. I ended up at Pedro in lumpy, bumpy closed-out mush. What is it that keeps me out there for 2-3 hours in utterly dismal conditions hoping that a good wave will somehow miraculously appear? I guess it's like that definition of insanity -"Trying the same thing over and over again, expecting different results."

Posted by: Jimmie at July 20, 2004 02:00 PM

Cadaver has a point about the slippery slope of vigilante justice. It is almighty tempting though.
Having lived on the sunny Sixth St. corridor for more than a decade, I have seen a few disheartening things and heard even more disheartening things from the police.

e.g.: having ridden down & participated in the arrest of a gentleman who I caught in the act of breaking into a car via the tried & true window and brick method, I was distressed to find him back on the street w/in 12hrs casing cars. The explanation- low value property crimes are released on own recog. In fact, I was told that any property crime with a damage value of less than $100 was an automatic dismissal at the DA due to case overload.

After having been assualted and forcibly bringing down the transgressor and delivering to an SFPD precinct house for arrrest & detainment I found said gentleman back on the street w/in 24 hrs. All calls to the DA were not returned and I found out that all "minor" physical assualts were likely to be dismissed if commited by a low value prosecution target (anyone other than the police chief's son or someone with connection to the city's legal system as a victim) due to inablity and lack of resources to prosecute. SFPD/ DA's office has a swell picture of my shiner though.

So there are conclusions to be drawn here. It is up to you to apply them as you see fit. But it does look as if, at least in SF, stealing or damaging less than $100 and beating people shy of life threatening are socially acceptable. Just keep traditional weapons out of it and stay off federal property....

Got it. Let's all chip in $20 bucks and buy a beater car. We'll tow it to the top of a hill and Kaiser, already dressed in his blue and red wetsuit with the cape will coast down the hill and into the lot (some traffic control may be required from the rest of the crew to avoid crushed joggers and dogs).

It's hard to be discreet in a cape, but Kaiser-stah will pretend to be as he hides a key under the bumper and paddles out. Thief approaches but what he doesn't realize is that we've rigged the beater car with a horrendous stink bomb of bobcat pee or skunk glands, whichever smells worse. He opens the door and BOOM! We set a camcorder to record the whole thing and then call the cops.

This approach has a number of advantages. First, we can't get arrested for assault which I think, based on my limited law enforcement experience, might result from a baseball bat intervention. Second, the crook has an odorific experience he won't forget. Third, he still goes to jail. Fourth, we get to stink up the patrol car that transports him. How come SFPD doesn't run undercover ops on this stuff? Too politically incorrect in the People's Republic of SF?

Oh, we also convert the video to digital and post the guy on all our websites as a deterrent. How's that for an aggro local plan?

While I was there there was a group of young guys around a car with all its doors and trunk open; I dunno, maybe they were acting suspiciously? I feel that I should have been more observant; I certainly will be in the future.

Pimpland was crowded, but I tried it out this time. LOTS of near misses, people at each other about dropping in, etc. Some pretty good waves now and then (long lulls, though), but not worth braving the crowd.

ROGERSVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- The party's over for four inmates accused of going on a beer run after the jail's doors were accidentally left unlocked.

The men were charged Monday with escape and bringing alcohol into a jail.

The breakout occurred Thursday night after cellblock doors at the Hawkins County Jail were left unlocked and a faulty control panel failed to alert jailers, Sheriff Warren Rimer said.

Two of the inmates walked out through a fire exit, leaving the door propped open with a Bible, and made a hole in the exercise yard fence. They walked to a market, bought some beer and returned to the jail to share it with other prisoners. When the booze ran out, the other two inmates made another beer run to a different store.

Authorities believe the inmates bought more than two cases of beer in all.

"I guess they thought if they came back they wouldn't be charged with escape," Rimer said, "but they were wrong."

The store visits did not raise alarm because the inmates were wearing street clothes borrowed from other prisoners. The crowded jail does not have enough orange jumpsuits to go around.

Wait a second, put the heads together you heads.

- Tallguy, what time do you suspect the rip-off happened? Were there other peeps in the water?

- Klooless, they were teenagers? What age, demo, etc?

- Tally it up yo! Let's get it on the network.

You stealing-mother-f**kers, we gonna get you SUCKA'S!

They were teen-ish, at least some of them white. I just remember thinking it odd that one of them, looking at me as I got out of my car, put his hand over the rear tire (like where you might hide a key). This was odd because the car was wide open. I thought maybe he was hiding the key and they'd lock up manually after getting suited up or something. Honestly, I wasn't paying much attention.

Posted by: Klooless at July 20, 2004 05:22 PM

Unfortunately Tall guy was driving a truck while Klooless saw a bunch a kids around a car.

However, it is possible that 2 breakins occurred at the cove this morning.

I should get my ole friend up here from Peru. He's not scared to kill thief's (as he demonstrated a couple months ago).

...or it could have been their car; it would make sense to hang at their own vehicle while strangers were around; the stranger might know whose truck it is.

Leave your cell phone, with GPS locator, on in the car.

When stolen, call the cops and the phone company.

When they track it down, blam, you got em. Make sure your phone has reception and is hidden where you leave it.

Posted by: blakestah at July 20, 2004 06:32 PM

I am pretty sure the ripoff happened between 7 and 9:30 this morning. There were about 10 people in the water there at that time, so its entirely possible that other people were going in and out. When I got out a couple more cars were pulled in, with people suiting up and getting ready to go in. Its hard to say whether or not the other people observed in the lot belonged there, just keep your eyes open for people who do not look like they "belong" there, at that time of day its only surfers and a few people hiking the nature trails near there. I suspect I was the victim of a quick swoop, maybe someone was in the bushes watching while I got suited up, post a lookout to make sure I am staying in the water, wait for a lull in the traffic, and a quick forcing of the door locks while a buddy waits to make the get away. They were not in the car long, they did not take a visible pair of decent sunglasses, did not look in the glove compartment, and did not search the pockets of my buddies pants (on the passenger seat) to steal his money and credit cards in his pockets, it was just reach in and get my pants with wallet in the pocket, and they are gone. Probably took no more than two minutes total, maybe less.

Federal, state and county officials have begun removing and disposing of soil contaminated with petroleum byproducts from a site near the Hilo Bayfront Recreation area on the Big Island.

The site is called the "Hilo Burrito" because 6,000 tons of contaminated soil has been wrapped and stored in plastic, resembling a large burrito.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the state Department of Health and Hawaii County began carting away the soil yesterday, which contains volatile and semivolatile toxins from an old Hilo gasoline-manufacturing plant that was destroyed by the tsunami that hit Hilo in 1960.

In May 1960, 61 people on the Big Island were killed by the tsunami, which was started by an earthquake in Chile.

The "Hilo Burrito" is at the mouth of the flood channel on the Hilo flood plain near the Ponahawai Street side of the Bayfront Recreation area.

The contaminated site was first discovered in 1997 when the Army started construction on a flood-control channel and levy to prevent the downtown Hilo area from flooding.

The contaminated soil will be dumped at the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill, the only site on the Big Island approved to take it. The soil will form the initial layer required for a new municipal waste area at the landfill and reduce the county's cost for preparing the area. Work on the site is expected to last four weeks.

The removal will eliminate the threat of hazardous contaminants being released into areas susceptible to flooding and tsunamis, Laurence Lau, deputy director for environmental health, said yesterday in a news release.

Cleanup crews will also remove 1,000 tons of contaminated soil from a second area near the original site. The area was exposed during flooding in November 2000.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

A 23-year-old man who allegedly punched another man fled from police by jumping into the ocean at Sandy Beach on Sunday, police said.

Police were breaking up a large fight at Sandy Beach at about 8:05 p.m. when one of the men involved punched a 22-year-old man who was driving away from the scene.

The suspect then jumped into the ocean, but after treading water for several minutes returned to shore, police said.

Police arrested him for illegally entering a car when he allegedly reached into the car to punch the driver.

walk to surf. BVB for pres.
if you drive, park your car on the beach.
you can just drive down there from the second sloat lot.

no big deal, just let some pressure out of your tires. have some 2x4's and a shovel just in case.

so i surfed south of this land. malibu, ventura, and san luis counties this past weekend. good times. warm water. soooo nice. surfed with friends, my favorite lady and a couple of dolphins.

the highlight of the sessions, was this 7'2" single fin fastback that i made for a friend. he's off fighting fires for the summer and the board was just sitting a a friends house waiting to get picked up. so.. i picked it up, waxed it up and took it out for it's maiden voyage.

10" fin, minimal rocker, flat bottom and full rails and the "turtle butt" tail.

rides the summer waves like a dream. i'll post some pics tomorrow.

peace to the peacefull and peace to the others too.

seacrest out.

What do I do if my phone doesn't have a rotating GPS unit? Can I install one in the normal antenna area?

Please advise...

Posted by: Kaiser at July 20, 2004 09:57 PM

elias, waxing a buddy's stick and taking it for its maiden voyage is like sleeping with a buddy's virgin fiancee for the first time just before the wedding.

Gee, wonder where those BOAT DOCKS might be.

Watching surfers suit up, from a secluded location, is a VERY easy score. You know the surfer will be gone for an hour plus, and will not be able to see you in action. Total exposure to risk. It's not actually uncommon for surfers to be targeted like this.

i know... blakestah... i was given the go ahead. otherwise i would have never. in fact the 'go ahead' was offered. pretty weird huh?

lucky for me i think everyone involved was pretty cool with what happened.

and well, it was a good ride! :)

kaiser, the newer cell phones come with a GPS locator. You can turn it off for commercial locators, and leave it on only for 911. Basically, its commercial purpose is allowing retailers to know where you are calling from, so they can better serve you. Or so they say.

But anyway, the cell phones have a built in locator, your car can have a lo-jack for free by leaving a cell phone concealed inside. You can call 911, tell them your SUV was ripped off, give them the cell phone number, and theoretically they will locate it within a few meters in minutes.
